Aspects of Classical Literary Materials in Secondary School Korean Textbooks and Literature Textbooks in the 2009 Revised Curriculum (2009 개정 교육과정 시기 국어·문학 교과서 고전문학 제재 수록 양상 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the change in literary materials in secondary school Korean textbooks and literature textbooks as per the 2009 revised curriculum. Literary materials in secondary school Korean textbooks have increased student awareness of literary canons because these have been taught and learned through public education. Seodongyo, Gemangmega, and Gasiri in classical poetry and the tale of Heungbu, Pongsan Mask Dance, the Tale of Ch'unhyang and the tale of Honggildong(by Heo Gyun) in classical prose are published in secondary school Korean textbooks and literature textbooks as per the revised curriculum of 2009. A three-verse Korean ode and a classical novel are the most chosen genres in classical literature.

  • In this paper, I focused on analyzing Yeoheon Chang Hyeon-gwang's literary theory and his prose in the genealogy of Confucian scholars in Chosun. Through this study, I would like to examine the trend of concentrating on 16th century when we treat the literary tendency of Confucian scholars. With this goal, I tried to seek the direction which was pursued by Confucian scholars who lived during the 17th century. Yeoheon tried to construct the spirit of humanities cosmically as an aim of his life, study, and literature. And he had a new understanding of human independence by suffering from Japanese invasion in the late of 16th century. He insisted that only human can realize the spirit of humanities on a cosmic base. He also thought that the morality(道) could be settled only by literature(文). We may interpret this concept as a progressive idea about literature comparing to the former Confucian scholars. On the other hands, Yeoheon tried to accept the literary theory of former scholars such like Park Young, Cho Sik, and Seong Woon who embraced Taoism. Yet he erased the color of Taoism in the field of topic, and he also tried to keep his distance from them in the field of literary form. This concept actually came from Lee Hwang's opinion, while Yeoheon tried to rouse scholar's independence. Through above, we may realize that the Confucian scholars of 17th century were not just imitators of 16th century. They tried to examine the former study and also tried to renew the theory.

  • This study examined at the literature of Choi Young(崔瑩). Choi Young(崔瑩) does not have a collection. Thus I looked at the records currently remaining about the words and actions of Choi Young(崔瑩). Among them, many discovered a piece of work in the midst of History of Goryeo History(高麗史) yeoljeon(列傳). This led to a review of the whole of literature. As a result, I could find many Prose works. This enabled us to examine one aspect of his literature. Here are some of the most popular works. First, a writing that was demoted to Gyerimyun(鷄林尹) because of the slander of Shin Don(辛旽), second a pact written to suppress Cheju Island, third a letter sent to persuade the minister of Cheju Park Yoon-Cheong(朴允淸), forth a statement against the king's will to relocate the capital, fifth a message to the king expressing his willingness to fight Hongshan(鴻山), sixth a message expressing deep despondency at defeat in Ganghwado Island and a message to the king about measures to defend, seventh a loyalty remonstrance for the king Wu(禑王). The method tried in this manuscript is significant. I have reindistributed the works of Mumingong(武愍公) in the records. Based on such achievements, new emphasis can be placed on the historical assessment of the achievements of the contemporary or later writers of the literary world.

A Study on Bogam Yi seol's(李?) Essays in Classical Chinese (복암(復菴) 이설(李?)의 한문산문(漢文散文) 연구(硏究))

  • The present study examines some essays by Yi Seol (李?, 1850-1906; pen name Bogam), a government official at the end of the Joseon Dynasty. Written in Classical Chinese, the essays are contained in The Collected Essays of Bogam (Bogam munjib). The study begins with a brief review on the Yeonan Yi Clan to which the official's family belonged, and then on his personal life history. The study goes on to analyze the contents of Yi's essays, which are classified into two themes: 1) his affirmation of the contemporary idea that saw the world as divided into the Chinese and the Barbarians, which justified and reinforced his resistance against Japan; and 2) his views on how to regain social stability. Concerning the former theme, Yi asserts that Joseon should not betray Qing China and should purge his nation of Japanese influence. Naming Japan as the evil enemy of Joseon, Yi expresses his firm resistance against the neighboring nation. As for the latter theme, his essays put forth an array of suggestions on how to disband the Donghak rebels, who emerged at the end of Joseon, and how to restore people displaced in the aftermath of social uprising. Although the suggestions are mostly general ones, he repeatedly stresses the importance of social stability in some of his essays addressed to the king.

  • This thesis aims at making clear correlation between the controversy that the nature of people and things is equal or different each other and Sung Confucianism, which is closed and discriminative. For this aim, I am looking closely at philosophy-reason prose that deals with the nature of people and things, from the early days of Chosun when Sung Confucianism became a new trend of thought to the later days when the controversy that the nature of people and things is equal or different had begun in earnest. This philosophy-reason prose has had gradual and important change. There are four different view points toward the nature of people and things. According to the first view point, people are the nucleus of the world. For the second one, things are thought to be important enough to be valued, but people are still the only core of the world. The third view point is that people and things are equally important and they are all the core of the world. Finally, the fourth view point regards people inferior to things and it says that things need to instruct people by scolding their bad behavior. There is a correlation between the view point of the nature of people and things and the attitude of an author. If some scholars think that people are the most important nucleus of the world, they tend to consider Sung Confucianism as the only school. On the contrary, other scholars who think that people and things are equal tend to respect other schools with open mind. In conclusion, the heated debates of the 18th century was an acute pain to destroy the closed and discriminative character of Sung Confucianism. It has contributed to innovate the thought toward the nature of people and things and the reformism of practical science have also done important role in the process of modernism's being groped by itself.

A Study on Bangsan Heo hun's(許薰) Essays in Classical Chinese (방산(舫山) 허훈(許薰)의 한문산문(漢文散文) 연구(硏究))

  • The present study examines Bangsanjib(舫山集, Collected Works of Bangsan) written by Heo Hun (許薰, pen name: Bangsan), a scholar of the late Joseon Dynasty. Chapter 2 reviews the author's life and his academic orientations against the backdrop of his times. Chapter 3 goes on to select some of his essays and analyze their contents and characteristics. In Chapter 2, Bangsan is portrayed as a hermit scholar who devoted his entire life to his scholarly achievements. Although he tried to develop his academic theories based on both the Geungi and Yeongnam Schools of Neo-Confucianism, the scholar was more inclined to the Geungi School. Chapter 3 analyzes Bangsan's essays in Classical Chinese with a focus on two themes: The first is the author's loyalty to the academic tradition of the Geungi School, which is demonstrated by his positivistic and pragmatic approach to philosophical issues. The second is his awareness of self-reliant national defense as is revealed by his assertion that Joseon should have knowledge, and provide education, on new weapons in order to be better equipped with such military equipment and become a powerful nation.

  • This paper is to explain who are the authors of first-half 18th Century private prose YeonHangRok(燕行錄) written in Chinese Character and what are interest-oriented aspects of that books. As objects of study, 3 private prose YeonHangRok(燕行錄) written by No-Ron Jeon -Ju Lee's Family(老論 全州李氏) were chosen. Result of reading articles in their anthology, I found their consciousness about going to Beijing. : They aware of "The importance of YeonHang(燕行)" and when they run a mission, they take an attitude of 'observation and attention' to their experience. With that consciousness of YeonHang(燕行) in common, So-jae(疎齋), Il-am (一菴) and Hanpojae(寒圃齋) wrote their YeonHangRok(燕行錄) that mainly describe their direct experience. So-jae(疎齋) and Hanpojae(寒圃齋)'s categories of descriptions are specialized in 'Public Affairs' and 'mission', Il-am(一菴) has widened to the everyday cultures and people of Other cultures.

A Study of Premodern Korean Proses with Lice as a Subject Matter: Their Story Developments (이[슬(蝨)]를 소재로 한 고전산문의 전개양상 고찰)

  • The present paper considers lice described in some premodern Korean proses, focused on the implications of lice and the literary strategies adopted by the writers in dealing with this unique subject matter. The works reviewed in this process are "A Story of the Louse and the Dog" by Lee Gyu-bo (Goryeo Dynasty), "The Old Man's Vindication of Lice" by Gwak Yeol (Early Joseon), "A Small Realization" by Yu Sin-hwan (Late Joseon) and "Miscellany" by Heo Jeon (Late Joseon). In these premodern essays, an allegory of lice was used to disclose various kinds of prejudices that people generally had: against things small (in "A Story of the Louse and the Dog"), against the old (in "The Old Man's Vindication of Lice"), against the dichotomous idea of right and wrong (in "A Small Realization") and against various aspects of life (in "Miscellany").

  • In this thesis I aim at investigating at the distinctive characteristic of homesickness in written by Hong sun-hag and the mean of the distinctive characteristic. The result as follow. The aspect of homesickness in the Yeonhaengnok : The first, the traveler express the reason that cause the homesickness. The reason that cause the homesickness is various. The second, the traveler express the emotional conflict between worry about the family and ambition of travel in Yeonhaengsanmun. The third, the traveler express the reason that cause the homesickness and yearn for his home. The traveler express the individual experience connected with the family in Yeonhaengsanmun, the universal experience connected with the family in Yeonhaenghansi. The distinctive characteristic of homesickness in the and the mean of the distinctive characteristic : The first, the aspect of homesickness in the is all aspect of homesickness. The author of synthesizes homesickness. The second, the scenery rouse the traveler' homesickness and the traveler expresses homesickness by the empathy to the scenery. The mean of expressing by the scenery is that the expression succeed the 17th century Yeonhaenggasa. The third, the traveler concretely expresses his inner world. The mean of concretely expressing the inner world is that the expression is related to the realism of expressing the inner world.

Literary Feature and Educational Value of Oral Travelogue (구술 여행담의 문학적 성격과 교육적 의의-임철호 화자의 <금강산 여행담>을 중심으로-)

  • In this study, I investigate the literary features and educational values of spoken travelogues by analyzing a travelogue about the Diamond Mountains by a farmer named Im, Chul-ho, a very interesting travelogue told for 70 minutes. It seems to have educational significance as a wonderful piece of literary work. The literary features of this tale can be summarized as follows. (1) It is truly 'literature of reality' which fully brings out literary appreciation; It evokes interest and emotional tension on the part of audience through vivid verbal embodiment of personal experiences; (2) It is a well constructed big story embedding small stories within it. The stories from many different travel points emerge into a whole unified story making it much richer and more attractive; and (3) It truly reflects the experiences and emotions of ordinary people. As such, it can be regarded as their spiritual property. In addition, spoken travelogues could be valuable as an object in literature education. It needs to be included in the literature curriculum and treated in the same way as written travelogues. With strengths as instructional materials, it could be effectively used to improve students' ability to express their daily experiences with literary sensibility and to make them better understand the lives of ordinary people in the past.
