  • A study on optimum design of the lightweight mirror of a satellite camera is presented. An optical surface deformation of the lightweight mirror, which is a principal component of the camera system, is an important factor affecting the optical performance of the whole camera system. In this study, optimum design of the lightweight mirror is presented. Total weight of the mirror to reduce the optical surface deformation and the launching cost is used as an objective function. Peak-to-valley value and natural frequency of the mirror are given as constraints to the optimization problem. The sensitivities of the objective function and constraint are calculated by a finite difference method. The optimization procedure is carried out by the commercial optimizer, DOT. As a verification of the optimum design of the mirror, two design examples are treated. In the real application example, the lightweight mirror with 600mm effective diameter is treated. The optimized results with various design variables, which are obtained by considering thickness limitations, are analyzed.

  • We propose a new approach to the feature selection for the classification of handwritten characters using two-dimensional(2D) wavelet packet bases. To extract key features of an image data, for the dimension reduction Principal Component Analysis(PCA) has been most frequently used. However PCA relies on the eigenvalue system, it is not only sensitive to outliers and perturbations, but has a tendency to select only global features. Since the important features for the image data are often characterized by local information such as edges and spikes, PCA does not provide good solutions to such problems. Also solving an eigenvalue system usually requires high cost in its computation. In this paper, the original data is transformed with 2D wavelet packet bases and the best discriminant basis is searched, from which relevant features are selected. In contrast to PCA solutions, the fast selection of detailed features as well as global features is possible by virtue of the good properties of wavelets. Experiment results on the recognition rates of PCA and our approach are compared to show the performance of the proposed method.

  • Background: Diagnosis of pulmonary tuberculosis is not easy when the sputum smear for Mycobacterium tuberculosis(M. Tb) is negative. We evaluated the clinical utility of polymerase chain reaction(PCR) for detecting M. Tb in bronchoalveolar lavage(BAL) samples. Methods: We recruited 84 patients whose sputum smear for M. Tb were negative or not available due to no production of sputum. We performed bronchoalveolar lavage for acid-fast stain, culture of mycobacteria, and PCR assay of BAL fluid. We analyzed the results of microbiologic examination. Results: The sensitivity of BAL fluid smear, culture, and PCR were 20%, 38%, and 40%, respectively. The specificity of BAL fluid PCR was 95%. The positive predictive value of PCR was 89%. The smear of BAL fluid was positive in 17%. The PCR of BAL fluid was the only diagnostic test in 17%. Therefore, the BAL fluid analysis including smear and PCR was diagnostic in 34 % within 24 hours. The BAL fluid analysis including smear, PCR, and culture was diagnostic in 55% within 2 month. Conclusion: The BAL fluid PCR was valuable method in the diagnosis of pulmonary tuberculosis in patients whose sputa were not available or reveal negative smear.

  • The variation of fish community by reduced amount of water in the Cheonggye Stream was investigation from April to October 2018. Water depth decreased by 10~50 cm according to the stations, compared with 2011, before the amount of water decreased. Twelve species of five families appeared during the survey period. Short barbel gudgeon and Zacco koreanus belonging to the Korean endemic species such appeared in the stations. Seven species of Rhodeus uyekii, Acheilognathus yamatsutae, Acheilognathus gracilis, Hemibarbus labeo, Abbottina rivularis, Opsariichthys uncirostris amurensis, and Erythroculter erythropterus did not appear in 2018. After the decreased amount water, the fish species which increased rapidly was Zacco platypus and increased to 24.9% in the relative abundance of fishes. Dominant species of each station were Acheilognathus yamatsutae (St. 4) and Zacco platypus (St. 1, 2, 2). Results to water quality tolerance guild analysis of fish, number of species belonging to sensitive species decreased from 34.0% to 8.5%, there was no significant difference inter-mediate species, and tolerance species increased from 50.2% to 75.5%. Insectivore species sharply decreased from 48.1% to 19.2%, there was no significant difference carnivore and herbivore, and omnivore rapidly increased from 51.6% to 80.7%. Dominant index 0.76 from 0.62 to increased, diversity index 1.80 from 1.33 to reduced, evenness index 0.57 from 0.42 to reduced, and richness index 3.02 from 2.90 to decreased.

  • In general, the life and asset casualties that occur due to landslide or slope failure in urban areas are larger than that in rural areas. In order to reduce the casualties, a slope management program is necessary to categorize slopes based on properties and to manage them systematically. The slope management system is the establishment of the data base for the geological and geotechnical factor according to slope stability, and the utilization of the data base to manage slopes. The suitable system must develop to slopes in urban area through the survey, analysis and evaluation process. Based on the above necessity, the slope management program which is applicable to slope management in an urban area has been developed at Hwangryung Mt. in Busan as a target area. The developed slope management program has various functions such as slope ID number of each slope or sub-region of a mountain, making a slope data sheet, analysis and grouping of slope stability, and establishment of a data base. The slope management program is constructed by use of GIS, and the survey, test and analysis data according to all slopes can be input and edited into the program. The program can also be utilized practically by end users due to the convenient input, edition printing, management and operation of slope data. Therefore, the slope management system has been established on the application of the developed program in Busan which is located in slope area. As the system is widely applied to other cities, the slope in urban area can be managed systematically and the slope hazards can be minimized.
