Heat Dissipation Design for KW Class Power Control Unit Mounted on Aircraft Store (항공기 장착물에 탑재되는 KW급 전력변환장치의 방열설계)

  • When a KW-class power control unit is installed in an aircraft installation, a heat dissipation design for a large amount of heat generated during power conversion should be considered. Failure to provide adequate heat dissipation can lead to equipment malfunction and fire, which can be a fatal factor in aviation operations. This paper describes the heat dissipation design of a KW-class power control unit installed in aircraft installation. The design and manufacturing test were conducted through computerized analysis, and the analysis model was corrected by confirming the rapid heat generation phenomenon of the heating element due to high power control. After the model revision, the design was improved, and the high-temperature operation test of the US military standard MIL-STD-810G was performed to confirm the feasibility of the improved design.

Material Qualification, Equivalency, and Acceptance Test for Aerospace Composite Materials (복합재료의 인증, 동등성 및 수락시험)

  • The civilian and military agencies require the use of statistic-based allowable to design aerospace vehicles with composite materials. In order to comply this regulation, it is necessary to establish relatively large amount of database, which increases test costs and time. Recently NASA/FAA developed the new method which can satisfy the regulation with smaller test matrix through AGATE(Advanced General Aviation Transport Experiments) program. Especially the concept of material equivalency is very useful when the material has been certified in previous program, and it allows the engineer to use the database with the addition of small test matrix. This paper summarizes the material equivalency and acceptance test methodology so that composite material database can be shared and improve the credibility of the material quality. As a demonstration, the material design allowable of the high temperature carbon/epoxy composite developed domestically was determined with this methodology.

Applicator of Hyperthermia with Compact Dipole Antenna Array (소형화된 다이폴 안테나 배열 구조를 이용한 고온 온열 치료 전자기파 방사체)

  • The compact dipole antenna elements and array structure is proposed. The array structure is designed for applicator in regional hyperthermia treatment to enhance the uniformity of the heat distribution which makes the treatment effective and prevents overheating. The compact dipole is designed with branched dipole and matching network to have small size and symmetric shape. The temperature simulation with specific absorption rate(SAR) and bio-heat equation is performed to have heat distribution. The applicator is designed, fabricated, and measured with multi-channel thermometer in 30 and 60 minutes. The simulation and measurement results showed agreement and the simulation in body circumstance has proper temperature result for hyperthermia therapy.

  • The thermal property of insulation material is essential in developing a high-temperature superconductor (HTS) power cable to be operated at around liquid-nitrogen temperature. Unlike metallic materials, nonmetallic materials have a high thermal resistance; therefore, accurate estimate of the heat flow is difficult in the case of nonmetallic materials. The aim of this study is to develop an instrument for precisely measuring the thermal conductivity of insulating materials over a temperature range of 30 K to approximately the room temperature by using a cryocooler. The details of the thermal-conductivity measurement system, including the design and fabrication processes, are described in this paper. In addition, the design optimization to minimize unavoidable heat leakage from room temperature is discussed.

A Study on Fire and Explosion Characteristics of Propane Gas (프로판가스의 화재 및 폭발 특성치에 관한 연구)

  • For the safety design and operation of many gas process, it is necessary to know certain explosion limit, flash point, auto ignition temperature and minimum oxygen concentration of handling substances. Also it is necessary to know explosion limit at high temperature and pressure. For the safe handling of propane, explosion limit and autoignition temperature of combustion characteristics for propane were investigated. By using the literatures data, the lower and upper explosion limits of propane recommended 2.0 vol% and 10.0 vol%, respectively. Also autoignition temperatures of propane with ignition sources recommended $450^{\circ}C$ at the electrically heated cruicible fumace(the whole surface heating) and recommended about $960^{\circ}C$ at the local hot surface. The new equations for predicting the temperature and the pressure dependence of the explosion limits of propane are proposed. The values calculated by the proposed equations were a good agreement with the literature data.

  • It is necessary to resolve the absolute velocity as well as Mach number to reflect the high temperature effect in high speed flow. So this region is classified as high enthalpy flows distinguished from high speed flows. Many facilities, such as arc-jet, shock tunnel, etc. has been used to obtain the high enthalpy flows at the ground level. However, it is difficult to define the exact test condition in this type of facilities, because some chemical reactions and energy transfer take place during the experiments. In the present study, a quasi 1D code considering the thermochemical non-equilibrium effect is developed to effectively estimate the test condition of a shock tunnel. Results show that the code gives reasonable solution compared with the results from the known experiments and 2D axisymmetric simulations.

  • For a mobile application such as cellular phone, micro fuel cells should be extremely compact and thin. RHFC can be an alternative solution because RHFC gives higher power density than DMFC and does not need ahydrogen storage vessel In this paper, RHFC using methanol fuel is made as a novel planar design without a PROX. Both reformer and cell are made closely in a same plate to share the heater of reformer with the cell. The PBI membrane is used in the cell. The reason is that high temperature of reformer can cause a performance drop when perfluorosulfonic acid membrane such as Nafion is used such a high temperature operation also guarantees the higher CO tolerance to MEA catalyst. The cell is designed as an air-breathing type which the cathode of the cell is opened to the air. The commercial Cu/ZnO/Al2O3 steam reformer catalyst is packed in reformer channel. The active area of MEA is $11.9cm^2$ and the peak power density was $27.5mW/cm^2$.

LiCl 감압 증류를 위한 폐쇄형 및 개방형 장치 기초 실험

  • 전기화학적 환원 기술을 이용한 고온 용융염 전해환원의 결과 생산되는 금속전환체는 다공성 특성에 의해 전해환원의 매질인 용융염을 함유하게 된다. 전해환원과 후속 전기화학 공정인 전해정련의 전해질은 각각 LiCl과 LiCl-KCl 공융염으로 상이하기 때문에 이렇게 금속전환체에 포함된 LiCl 염이 동반되어 전해정련 공정에 도입될 경우 전해정련 공정의 공융염 조성을 어긋나게 한다. 이에 따라 금속전환체의 잔류염은 효과적으로 제거되어야 하며 공정으로 감압 증류에 의한 잔류염 제거 공정이 고려되고 있다. LiCl은 증기압이 비교적 낮기 때문에 감압의 고온 조건이 공정에 필요하다. 그러나 상평형도 분석 결과 전해환원 공정에서 산화물을 담아 음극으로 사용되어 환원된 금속전환체와 함께 도입되는 SUS 재질의 바스켓과 사용후핵연료 금속전환체의 주된 원소인 우라늄과는 공융할 수 있기 때문에 LiCl 증발 온도는 $720^{\circ}C$ 이하로 유지되어야 한다. 이와 같은 조건에서 LiCl 증발 속도를 높이기 위해서는 감압 조건이 필수적이다. 본 연구에서는 감압조건에서 LiCl 휘발 실험을 위해 폐쇄형 및 개방형 반응기를 제작하여 압력 조건 및 Ar 유량 등에 따른 LiCl 휘발율을 측정하였다. 증발된 LiCl은 일정 감압 조건에서 분말형으로 냉각부위에 회수 될 수 있었으나 완전 진공 조건에서는 결정형으로 냉각 부위에 응축되는 것으로 확인 되었으며 일정 진공 조건에서는 Ar 유량에 따라 증발량이 의존하지 않는 것으로 나타났다. 연구 결과 증발염의 취급 빛 이송을 위해 분말형 회수를 목표로 설정할 수 있었으며 공정조건으로 일정 수준의 감압 조건을 제시하였다. 이 후 후속 연구로 장치의 대형화 및 증발 속도 향상을 위한 추가적인 연구가 계획되어 있으며 연구 결과에 기초하여 공학규모 파이로 공정 시설인 PRIDE에 도입될 장치의 기초 설계 자료를 생산할 예정이다.

  • The economic issue of the period of return versus investment has emerged to efficiently utilize the thermal energy of public resource recovery facilities using waste and private thermal source facilities using BIO-SRF. Accordingly, the optimum temperature and pressure facilities are required beyond the traditional designed, constructed and operated. In this study, we analyzed current energy output by different heat and pressure model in domestic facilities, and calculated the characteristics of green-house gas emission. In order to, utilize the thermal energy producing facilities using waste and biomass fuel more efficiently, it is temperature and pressure, which will lead to more lucrative investment and return as well.

Study of Internal Flow in the supersonic Nozzle by the Hydraulic Analogy (수력학적 상사를 적용한 초음속 노즐 내부 유동 연구)

  • Though rocket nozzle flow is very important to the rocket performance, the direct measurement is very difficult because of high temperature and high pressure gas flow. Then the experiment utilizing the hydraulic analogy has been developed for such a problem. Supersonic flows through an axisymmetric De Laval nozzle of solid rocket motor was simulated in a 2-D sluice-type water-table designed and manufactured utilizing hydraulic analogy. Methods to minimize or account for non-analogous effects in the hydraulic system must be reviewed for the quantitative application of the hydraulic analogy. In this application the water table is inclined slightly, so that gravity acceleration has a small component in the direction of motion, thus compensating for the effect of friction. Flow visualization leads to better understanding of the analogous system. Within the experimental errors, it is shown that the hydraulic analogy can be used as an effective tool for the study of two dimensional isentropic flows of gases in many fields.
