An expanded scheme of a direct numerical solution method for solving the Navier-Stokes equation considering the modified boundary conditions for gas lubrication with ultra low clearance at high .LAMBDA. region is presented. Many examples are calculated by this scheme and their results are compared to the previous solutions using P$^{2}$H$^{[-992]}$ . This scheme has the advantages of fast calculation time and stable convergence in high .LAMBDA. region, and gives very good results in the case of fluid film thickness discontinuity.
A governing equation of uncoupled three dimensional finite strain theory of consolidation is presented. This equation is suitable for relatively thick layers, possessing large strain, non-linear material property, and variable permeability. A special numerical solution procedure has to be adopted for the finite difference scheme because the solution is not stable in using Forward-Time Centered-Space (FTCS) method and the governing equation is highly non-linear. The solution is capable of predicting settlement with respect to time. The results predicted by the developed method of analysis have been compared with those of experimental tests on different types of highly compressible soils with vertical wick drain. The uncoupled three dimensional finite strain theory of consolidation appears to predict settlement behavior well. A detailed comparison shows good agreement in terms of total settlement, and reasonable agreement with respect to time.

Recent increase of large scale construction near costal area has also increased the application of soft ground treatment. As a result, solidification with cement and lime which increases stability and durability of soils, is frequently used for surface layer stabilization in soft ground site. While stabilization of very soft clay with high plasticity and compressibility has widely been studied, studies on silty clay with low plasticity and compressibility are relatively rare. In this study, after stabilizing low plasticity silty clay of Songdo area with cement and lime under various water contents, mixing ratio, and curing time, uniaxial compression test and plate load test were performed. Strength properties from both tests were considerably consistent. And trackability of construction equipment on the treated surface layer of dredged land was estimated. Finally, optimum mixing condition for Songdo silty clay was proposed.
To know the role of 'the solid compressive pressure to the first solid layer of a cake, $p_d$' in the 'unified theory on solid-liquid separation', we analyzed extremely compressible cake formed with floc for the following three operations with our new concepts. First, the role of $p_d$ was studied in calculating the sediment thickness of floc, and in calculating the cake thickness in cake filtration performed with floc sediment. Second, we calculated the expression procedure using $p_d$. Finally, the influence of $p_d$ on cake thickness in hindered sedimentation, and on the calculation of the procedure of hindered sedimentation $p_d$ was verified. Thus the possibility of application of 'unified theory on solid-liquid separation' and the importance of $p_d$ was verified. Through these processes, new theoretical definitions of the cake filtration, expression and hindered sedimentation was established.
This paper describes the performance of ground improvement project using prefabricated vertical drains of condition, in which approximately 10m dredged fill overlies original soft foundation layer in the coastal area composed of soft marine clay with high water content and high compressibility. From field monitoring results, excessive ground settlement compared with predicted settlement in design stage developed during the following one year. In order to predict the final consolidation behavior, recalculation of consolidation settlements and back analysis using observed settlements were conducted. Field monitoring results of surface settlements were evaluated, and then corrected because large shear deformation occurred by construction events in the early stages of consolidation. To predict the consolidation behavior, material functions and in-situ conditions from laboratory consolidation test were re-analyzed. Using these results, height of additional embankment is estimated to satisfy residual settlement limit and maintain an adequate ground elevation. The recalculated time-settlement curve has been compared with field monitoring results after additional surcharge was applied. It might be used for verification of recalculated results.

A new axial pressing method using pulse magnetizing field was studied to improve the remanence of Nd-Fe-B sintered magnets. In order to make near-net shape green compacts of butterfly, disk, or coin magnets, conventional axial-type pressing has been normally used. However, compared to the transverse-type pressing, it is not possible to obtain higher remanence by this method because the magnetic alignment of powder begins to deteriorate when the density of green compacts increases over a critical value. On the other hand, we found that an axial pressing under pulse magnetizing field was very effective to increase the degree of magnetic alignment of powder, yielding remanences even higher than those obtained by the transverse pressing. In this study, it was revealed that appropriate tapping density and how to apply pulse magnetic held were important to improve the grain alignment and thus remanence of Nd-Fe-B sintered magnet.

The secondary consolidation settlement of soft clay is generally very little compared to the total settlement and occurs very slowly during long-term period. However the secondary consolidation settlement is comparatively large amount in organic and heavily compressed clay and is a very important engineering factor. In order to reduce residual settlements in reclaimed soft ground, the preloading method is often used. In this study, in order to determine reasonable long-term settlements of large reclaimed site, laboratory incremental loading consolidation tests and surcharging consolidation tests are performed. Sampling was done at Incheon area of west coast and Gwangyang area of south coast in Korea. The characteristics of secondary consolidation have obtained through laboratory tests and analyzed systematically to predict long-term settlements. Additionally, the location data and laboratory test results are correlated by using GIS(geographic information system). The secondary consolidation settlement of the site was predicted based on D/B and the operation technique and estimation technique of space of GIS.

As the demand for underground space increases, many researchers have been studying the load reduction method using high compressible materials to solve for the stability problem of the overhead load and for the increase of the earth pressure which decreases the function of the underground structure. This paper determines the optimum soft zone and the effect of the using EPS Geofoam as a load reduction material to arch structures. A finite element analysis program, ABAQUS, is used to analyze the soil-structure interaction and the behavior of buried arch structures considering different four EPS Geofoam forms to confirm the most conservative shape. The optimum cross-sectional shape was determined by comparing the results of earth pressure reduction rate in accordance with the change of span-rise ratio and span length of the arch structure. It was confirmed that the earth pressure generated in the arch structure using the optimal soft zone selected by the numerical analysis was reduced by an average of 78%. In this study, the effect of EPS Geofoam on soil pressure reduction and its applicability to underground arch structures will provide an economical and conservative way to design underground structures and will help to increase the usability of deep underground space.
The renowned Terzaghi's one-dimensional consolidation theory is not applicable to quantification of time-rate settlement for highly deformable soft clays such as dredged soil deposits. To deal with this special condition, a non-linear finite strain consolidation theory should be adopted to predict the settlement of dredged soil deposits including self-weight and surcharge-induced consolidation. It is of importance to determine the zero effective stress void ratio ($e_{00}$), which is the void ratio at effective stress equal to zero, and the relationships of void ratio-effective stress and of void ratio-hydraulic conductivity for characterizing non-linear finite strain consolidation behavior for deformable dredged soil deposits. The zero effective stress void ratio means a transitional status from sedimentation to self-weight consolidation of dredged soils. In this paper, laboratory procedures and equipments are introduced to measure such key parameters in the non-linear finite strain consolidation analysis. In addition, the non-linear finite strain consolidation parameters of the Incheon clay and kaolinite are evaluated with the aid of the proposed methods in this paper, which will be used as input parameters for the non-linear finite strain consolidation analyses being performed in the companion paper.
There are some problems in evaluating the bearing capacity of decomposed granite soils by general equations on account of their inherent compressibility and crushability. In order to investigate this kind of the engineering characteristics on decomposed granite soils in detail, it is necessary to how the micro property of the single particle composing the granite soils, and then the relevance to the macro characteristics of the soils has to be cleared. The reason why the single particle properties are not studied is first the difficulty to find out some regulating parameters, and secondly little understanding of its significance. Furthermore, the water in the decomposed granite soils accelerates the particle crushing. Consequently, increasing of compressibility and decreasing of shear strength would occur. Actually, when the ground settlement is a big issue in the embanked ground using the decomposed granite soils, the sensitive change of compressibility due to the change of water content in the ground becomes conspicuous. In this study, the single particle strength characteristics are studied and microscopic particle shape analyses are performed. In addition the compressibility of the decomposed granite soils and water content effect on the compressibility are analysed based on the test results.
