The numerical simulations on the train entering a tunnel are performed by solving unsteady axi-symmetric problems. To reduce the effects of the pressure wave generated by the train starting abruptly, several starting methods of the train are examined. The high order velocity increase gives better results than those for the linear velocity increase. The high order velocity increase gives good results for the pressure rise by the train entering a tunnel, too. The distance to the train reaches the highest running velocity from the start should be more than 60 m when the train speed is 350 km/h.
Pressure waves are generated and propagate in tunnel when train enters a tunnel with high speed. Compression wave due to the entry of train head propagates along the tunnel and is reflected at tunnel exit as expansion wave. While expansion wave due to the entry of train tail propagates along the tunnel and is reflected at tunnel exit as compression wave. These pressure waves are repeatedly propagated and reflected at tunnel entrance and exit. Severe pressure change per second causes ear-discomfort for passengers in cabin and micro pressure wave around tunnel exit. It is necessary to analyze the transient pressure phenomena in tunnel qualitatively and quantitatively, because pressure change rate is considered as one of major design parameters for an optimal tunnel cross sectional area and the repeated fatigue force on car body. In this study, we developed the characteristics method analysis based on fixed mesh system and compared with the results of real train test. The results of simulation agreed with that of experiment.
This paper employed finite element method (FEM) to study the dynamic response of Steel Fiber-Reinforced Concrete(SFRC) panels subjected to impact loading by spherical projectiles. The material properties and non-linear stress-strain curves of SFRC were obtained by compression test and flexural test. Various parametric studies, such as the effect of fiber volume fraction and thickness of panels, are made and numerical analyses are compared with experiments conducted. It is shown that protective performance of concrete panels will be improved by adding steel fiber. Area loss rates and weight loss rates are decreased with increasing fiber volume fraction. Also, penetration modes can be expected by FEM, showing well agreement with experiment. Results can be applied for designing the protection of military structures and other facilities against high-velocity projectiles.

A modified patched grid scheme has been developed and employed for and axi-symmetric unsteady Euler solver based on Roe's FDS to analyze the unsteady flow fields induced by a train and a tunnel. On this paper, the innovative zonal method, named hybrid dimensional approach, was proposed and applied to the train-tunnel interaction problems. The basic idea of this method is to maximize the efficiency of numerical calculations by minimal assumption of spatial dimensions. The hybrid dimensional approach, embedded in the present modified patched grid method, yielded high numerical accuracy as much as the fully axe-symmetric method. The hybrid dimensional approach is expected to reduce the huge computation time of the train-tunnel interaction problems especially in the cases of solving a long tunnel.
An iterative time marching procedure for solving incompressible turbulent flow has been applied to the flows around a high speed train including cross-wind effects. This procedure solves three-dimensional unsteady incompressible Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations on a non-orthogonal curvilinear coordinate system using first-order accurate schemes for the time derivatives and third/second-order accurate schemes for the spatial derivatives. Turbulent flows have been modeled by Baldwin-Lomax turbulent model. To validate present procedure, the flow around a high speed train at zero yaw angle was simulated and compared with experimental data. Generally good agreement with experiments was achieved. The flow fields around the high speed train at 9.2°, 16.7°, and 45° of yaw angle were also simulated.

The three-dimensional unsteady compressible Euler equation solver with ALE, CFD code, PAM-FLOW based on FEM method has been applied to analyze the flow field around the high speed train which is entering into a channel. From the present study, the pressure and flow transients were calculated and analyzed. The generation of compression wave was observed ahead of train and the high pressure in the gap between the train and the tunnel was also found due to the blockage effects. It was found that abrupt fluctuation in pressure exists in the region from train nose to shoulder of train corresponding to 10% of total length of train during tunnel entry. Computed time history of aerodynamic forces of train during tunnel entry show that drag coefficient rapidly rises and saturates at about non-dimensional time 0.31. The total increase of drag coefficient before and after tunnel entry is about 1.1%. Transient profile of lift force shows similar pattern to drag coefficient except abrupt drop after saturation and lift force in the tunnel increases 0.08% more than that before tunnel entry.

This paper measures the mechanical properties of corrugated cardboard, an eco-friendly packaging material, and applies these measurements to the MAT_PAPER model in LS-DYNA for finite element analysis. Although MAT_PAPER is primarily designed for modeling the behavior of paper, this research demonstrates its applicability to corrugated cardboard as well. Tensile, compression, and shear behaviors of a corrugated cardboard were measured and analyzed, and based on these results, six yield surfaces were derived and integrated into the MAT_PAPER model. By comparing the finite element analysis of the material tests and the low velocity collapse analysis of the corrugated cardboard square boxes with each experimental results, it was shown that the behavior of corrugated cardboard could be equivalently considered well by the MAT_PAPER model. However, since the model is not rate-dependent, the high strain rate properties of liner materials were measured and used for strain rate correction. Consequently, this matches well with the results of the high-speed compression tests of the corrugated cardboard square boxes.

When a train enters the tunnel at high speed, the pressure wave occurs. When this pressure wave reaches at the exit of tunnel, some are either emitted to the outside or reflected in tunnel by the form of expansion wave. The wave emitted to the outside forms the impulsive pressure wave. This wave is called 'Micro Pressure Wave'. The micro pressure wave generates noise and vibration around a exit portal of tunnel. When it becomes worse, it causes anxiety for residents and damage to windows. Thus, it requires a counterplan and prediction about the micro pressure wave for high speed railway construction. In this paper, the effects of train head nose and tunnel portal shape were investigated by model test, measurement for the micro pressure wave at the operating tunnel as well as numerical analysis for the gradient of pressure wave in the tunnel. As results, a method for predicting the intensity of the micro pressure wave is suggested and then the intensity of the micro pressure wave is analyzed by the tunnel length and the cross-sectional area.

A compression wave is attenuated or distorted as it propagates in a tube. The present study investigated the propagation characteristics of the compression waves which are generated by a train in a high-speed railway tunnel. A Total Variation Diminishing (TVD) difference scheme was applied to one-dimensional, unsteady viscous compressible flow. The numerical calculation involved the effects of wall friction, heat transfer and energy loss due to the friction heat in the boundary layer behind the propagating compression wave, and compared with the measurement results of a shock tube and a real tunnel. The present results show that attenuation of the compression wave in turbulent boundary layer is stronger than in laminar boundary layer, but nonlinear effect of the compression wave is greater in the laminar boundary layer. The energy loss due to the frictional heat had not influence on attenuation and distortion of the propagating compression waves.

A new control method to alleviate the impulsive noise at the exit of high-speed railway tunnel was applied to the compression wave at the entrance of the tunnel. This method uses the interaction phenomenon of unsteady expansion wave and unsteady compression wave. Unsteady expansion wave was assumed to be made instantaneously by the simple theory of shock tube. Total Variation Diminishing method was employed to solve the axisymmetric unsteady compressible flow field with a specified compression wave. Numerical results show that the maximum pressure gradient of the propagating compression wave decreases with increase of the wave length of the unsteady expansion wave. It is found that the impulsive noise reduction can be obtained when the unsteady expansion wave with a large wave length is emitted just before the train enters the tunnel. The present results give the possibility to reduce the impulsive noise at the exit of tunnel.
