Adsorption of Aromatic Compounds on a QCM System Coated with Polymer Films (고분자 필름이 코팅된 QCM 시스템에 의한 방향족 화합물의 흡착)

  • A quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) system coated with poly (isobutylene), polystyrene, and poly (methyl methacrylate) has been prepared to measure the adsorption amounts of benzene, toluene, and p-xylene at very low pressures. The resonant frequency shift of the QCM system is proportional to the increase in pressure in all experiments. The Henry's constants for all adsorbates on the polymer films are obtained from experimental data and compared with the minimum adsorption potential energies between adsorbates and the polymer films. In general, there is an explicit correlation between adsorption amount and the minimum adsorption potential energy.

Preparation and Characterization of Biomass-based Polymer Blend Films (Biomass-based 고분자 블렌드필름의 제조 및 특성 연구)

  • To manufacture of a completely biodegradable and compostable biomass -based blend polymer film, two types of cellulose acetates(DS=2.4 and DS=2.7) were blended with 5 - 50 wt% of low average molecular weight polylactide(PLA) by mixing each polymer solution having same viscosity in 10 wt% methanol/dichloromethane. Their surface morphology, thermal and mechanical properties were studied. The chemical structures of blend films were confirmed by the fourier transform IR spectroscopy with attenuated total reflection(FT-IR ATR) spectrophotometer. Scanning electron microscope(SEM) photos of blend films of both CAs with less than 5 % of PLA showed homogeneous morphology. On the contrary, the other blends with higher than 20 wt% of PLA content showed a large phase separation with spherical domains. The thermal property of blend films was also analyzed with thermogravimetric analysis(TGA) and differential scanning calorimeter(DSC). The tensile strength of CA/PLA blend films was increased up to $820kg_f/cm^2$ for TAC/PLA and $600kg_f/cm^2$ for DAC/PLA.

Comparative Study on Adsorption Properties of Carbons Derived from Lignin and Polymer/Lignin Composite Precursors (리그닌 및 고분자/리그닌 복합소재 탄화 생성물의 흡착 특성 비교)

  • In this study, a carbon film derived from a polymer/lignin composite precursor was produced by a carbonization cycle with a controlled temperature profile. The feasibility of successful formation of the carbon film using the carbonization cycle was monitored. The adsorption behavior of the carbon film toward various molecules, such as nonpolar and polar organic molecules, and dyes was investigated using ultraviolet/visible (UV/Vis) spectroscopy compared with that of carbonized lignin. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) analysis proved that a robust carbon film was prepared by the carbonization cycle. It was also demonstrated that the carbonized lignin and carbon film showed adsorption capability toward all types of organic molecules, in particular organic dyes, owing to the carbonized lignin. This work provides important information for future relevant research.

  • Induction mechanism of molecular orientations for a rubbed polymer film as an alignment layer was investigated using polarized UV/Vis spectroscopic experiments for polyimide and polyvinylcinnamate whose conjugated electrons are located along main chain and side chain, respectively. By determining anisotropy formed in the rubbed film, LC director formed in the LC cell, and orientation direction of deposited pentacene molecules, it was found that LC orientation was induced mainly by molecular interactions whereas surface microgrooves formed by the rubbing process affect the orientation direction of deposited pentacene molecules.

  • In this study, the effect of solvent on the pre-irradiation grafting of VBC(vinylbenzyl chloride) onto a ETFE(polyethylene-co-tetrafluoroethylene) was evaluated. ETFE film was irradiated to generate radical species onto its backbone chain. Each irradiated film was immersed into VBC monomer mixtures diluted with various solvents such as toluene, heptane, and isopropanol etc. for grafting process and then the degree of grafting of each film was measured. FTIR analysis confirmed that the VBC-g-ETFE film was successful prepared. For the films prepared in the various solvents, the mechanical strength and the distribution pattern of the graft polymer over the cross-section of the films were measured and the effect of solvent was evaluated.

Effect of Surface Modification by Solvent Treatment on Morphology and Radionuclide Pick-up Efficiency of Polysulfone Film (폴리설폰 필름의 형상 및 방사성 오염물 채취에 있어 용매처리의 효과)

  • The surface of dense polysulfane films was modified through solvent treatment. The modification process consisted of dipping a film for one second in dimethylformamide and then immersing it Into a nonsolvent bath. After being solidified, the original transparent film transformed into an opaque white one, which is due to the light scattering on pores newly developed on the surface. The surface roughness entailing the pore formation was more explicit on a film coagulated by water as nonsolvent than on a film coagulated by isopropanol. The surface-modified films show the better pick-up efficiency than a conventional filter paper on the detaching of radioactive contaminants on the contaminated area. The pick-up efficiency of the film prepared by the water immersion process was superior to that of the film prepared in the isopropanol bath, which was consistent with the surface roughness result. The surface-modified films kept the dense inner structure, playing a major role preventing a possible secondary contamination during the pick-up process.

Mechanical Properties of ${\kappa}-Carrageenan$ and Chitosan Film Composite (${\kappa}$-카라기난과 키토산 혼합 필름의 물성)

  • Composite films based on ${\kappa}-carrageenan$ and chitosan were prepared, and tensile strength (TS), elongation (E), and water vapor permeability (WVP) of the films were measured. The molecular weight of ${\kappa}-carrageenan$ and chitosan was measured by a light-scattering instrument and was $5.1{\times}10^5,{\;}and{\;}1.71{\times}10^5$, respectively. TS of ${\kappa}-carrageenan$ and chitosan free film was 30.2 MPa and 21.0 MPa, respectively. TS of composite film was not related to the amount of the ascorbic acid. E of composite film was lower than those of the free films of ${\kappa}-carrageenan$ and chitosan. WVP of composite film was lower than that of chitosan film and was similar to WVP of ${\kappa}-carrageenan$ film.

  • Polymeric gel electrolytes based on polyacrylronitile blended with poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoro-propylene)(P(VdF-co-HFP), which were reinforced with glass fiber cloth(GFC) to increase the mechanical strength, were prepared for the practical use in secondary battery. Test cell consisting of $LiCoO_2$ as a cathode and mesophase pich-based ca.bon fiber (MCF) as an anode material showed a capacity of 110 mAh/g based on the cathode weight at 0.2C rate at room temperature. Over $80\%$ of initial capacity was retained after 400cycles, indicating that GFC is suitable for a reinforcing material to increase the mechanical strength of gel based electrolytes.

  • Solid polymer electrolyte films are prepared by ultraviolet radiation in the mixtures of an ionic liquid salt (1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate, $EMIBF_4$) and solvent (acetonitrile (ACN) or propylene carbonate(PC)), and an oligomer (poly(ethylene glycol)diacrylate, PEGDA, 45-60 wt.%). Electrochemical properties of activated carbon supercapacitors adopting the solid polymer electrolyte films as a separator are also examined by cyclic voltammetry and impedance measurement techniques. As a result, the supercapacitor adopting the PEGDA as much as 45 wt.% exhibits a superior capacitance of $46Fg^{-1}$ at $20mVs^{-1}$. It seems that this is due to fast kinetics of ion conduction by sufficient film flexibility, which can be allowed by comparatively weak ultraviolet curing of small anount of the PEGDA.
