  • The present study has been carried out to reduce the heat loss from a refrigerator by changing thermal conductivity and partial removal of rubber magnet near refirgerator gasket. To perform this purpose, two dimensional heat transfer analysis for the horizontal cross sectional plane of a refrigerator has been accomplished. From the present study, it could be seen that the heat loss could be reduced nearly 7% by changing thermal conductivity of rubber magnet from 10W/mK to 1W/mK. The heat loss reduction, 17%, could be achieved by removal of rubber magnet near hotline and the effect on the heat loss reduction by partial removal of rubber magnet might be helpful for the refrigerator power consumption.

  • This study proposes a new technology for a smart damper with flag-shaped behavior using the combination of magnetic friction and rubber springs. The magnet provides friction and, thus, energy dissipation, and the rubber springs with precompression contribute to present self-centering capacity of the damper. To verify their performance, this study conducts dynamic tests of magnet frictional dampers and precompressed rubber springs. For the purpose, hexahedron Neodymium (NdFeB) magnets and polyurethane rubber cylinders are used. In the dynamic tests, loading frequency varies from 0.1 to 2.0 Hz. The magnets provide almost perfect rectangular behavior in force-deformation curve. The rubber springs are tested without or with precompression. The rubber springs show larger rigid force with increasing precompression. Lastly, this study discusses combination of rigid-elastic behavior and friction to generate 'flag-shaped' behavior for a smart damper and suggests how to combine the magnets and the rubber springs to obtain the flag-shaped behavior.

  • This paper investigates the distortion of magnetic field of a brushless DC (BLDC) motor due to deformed rubber magnet. Global or local deformation of rubber magnet in the BLDC motor is mathematically modeled by using the Fourier series. Distorted magnetic field is calculated by using the finite element method, and unbalanced magnetic force are calculated by using the Maxwell stress tensor. The first harmonic deformation in the global deformation of rubber magnet generates the first harmonic driving frequency of the unbalanced magnetic force, and the rest harmonic deformations of rubber magnet except the harmonic deformation with multiple of common divisor of pole and slot introduces the driving frequencies with multiple of slot number ${\pm}1$ to the unbalanced magnetic force. However, the harmonic deformation with multiple of common divisor of pole and slot does not generate unbalanced magnetic force due to the rotational symmetry. When the rubber magnet is locally deformed, the unbalanced magnetic force has the first harmonic driving frequency and the driving frequencies with multiples of slot number ${\pm}1$.

  • Magneto-rheological elastomers (MREs) were manufactured by incorporation of magnetic responsible powder (MRP) into natural rubber and silicone rubber. The optimum loading amounts of MRP was 30 vol.% and the natural rubber based MRE (NR-MRE) showed better mechanical property than that of silicone rubber based MRE (S-MRE). However, the modulus shift ratio caused by S-MRE, measured by Self-modified Electromagnet Applied Fast Fourier Transform Analyser (SEFFTA), was higher than that of NR-MRE. The modulus shift ratio caused by NR-MRE was 10%, while the modulus shift ratio caused by S-MRE was 35.7%. The modulus shift ratio could be improved by orienting the magnetic direction of MRP before crosslinking the MRE. The degree of orientation of MRP was analyzed using SEM.

  • The neodymium magnet inserted mold was proposed to orient magneto-responsible particles efficiently. The anisotropic magneto-rheological elastomer(MRE) was prepared using the new mold and the optimum amounts of the particles was 30 vol.%. As the orientation of particles was increased, the tensile strength of MRE was decreased, while the hardness of MRE was increased. It was found that the MRE containing 30 vol.% of magneto-responsible particles showed the maximum magneto-rheological effect. The ratio of shear modulus shift was 59% at the input current of 3 A. The transmissibility of MRE was decreased with increasing the input current and loading amounts of magneto-responsible particles. Therefore, the damping property of MRE could be improved by preparing the anisotropic MRE.
