  • We invested which is major one in rubber materials design factors affecting on noise and showed the design guide for low noise tire development in this study. Tire noise and impact noise for rubber sheets were tested at anechoic room. Hardness, tensile and dynamic mechanical properties were also measured using the rubber sheets. A major design factor of rubber materials affecting on the tire noise was hardness or 300% modulus. There was also positive correlation between two properties. Therefore, designing rubber materials to have low hardness or 300% modulus can reduce noise.

  • In this paper, the characteristics of RB(rubber bearing) were studied by various prototype tests on RB with low hardness rubber. The characteristics of RB were tested on displacements, repeated cycles, frequencies, vertical pressures, temperature, vertical stiffness and the capability of shear deformation. The prototype test showed that the displacement and vertical pressures were the most governing factors influencing on characteristics of RB. The effective stiffness and equivalent damping of RB showed small increment in high frequency range. After the repeated cyclic test with 50's cycles, the effective stiffness and equivalent damping of RB were almost constant compared with those of the 1st cycles due to low hysteretic damping. The shear modulus of RB was reduced after large deformation, and this value of RB was partly recovered after 40 days. Finally, the shear failure test of RB was conducted, the prototype was failed over 490% of shear strain, and real size RB was failed over 430% of shear strain.

  • In this study, the effects of curing system on the hardness of rubber materials at various temperature were investigated. NR and SBR were compounded with various sulfur or peroxide content, in order to obtain various crosslink densities. The changes of hardness and crosslink density were measured as a function of temperature and the relationship was examined. The thermal stresses were also measured in order to investigate the effect of entropy as a function of temperature. The hardness of NR and SBR compounds increased with increasing temperature above room temperature, and the measured thermal stress increased as temperature increased. However, the crosslink densities were not changed by temperature change.

  • The friction characteristics of natural rubber plates under various conditions including sliding speed, normal force, hardness, lubrication conditions and thickness of plate are analyzed experimentally. The frictional force and normal force are measured by a tester pin and a load ceil with strain gages. Experimental results suggest that the coefficient of friction decreases with increasing the hardness of rubber and decreasing the thickness of plate. The effect of sliding speed is not significant over the speed range employed. The coefficient of friction is found to be about 0.1 under oil lubrication condition and varies from 0.9 to 3.9 under no lubrication condition.

  • Coolant rubber hoses for automobile radiators can be degraded and thus failed due to the influence of contacting stresses of air and coolant liquid under thermal and mechanical loadings. In this study, for EPDM(ethylene-propylene diene monomer) rubber conventionally used as a radiator hose material the aging behaviors of the skin part due to thermo-oxidative and electro-chemical stresses were nondestructively evaluated. Through the thermo-oxidative aging test, it was shown that the surface hardness IRHD(International Rubber Hardness Degrees) of the rubber increased with a considerable reduction of failure strain. On account of the penetration of coolant liquid into the skin part the weight of rubber specimens degraded by electro-chemical degradation(ECD) test increased, whereas their. failure strain and IRHD hardness decreased largely. The penetration of coolant liquid seemed to induce some changes in inner structure and micro hardness distribution of the rubbers. Consequently, EPDM rubbers degraded by thermo-oxidative aging and ECD could be characterized nondestructively by micro-hardness and chemical structure analysis methods.

  • Hardness of rubbery materials, which is important for dimensional stability and product performance, was investigated upon temperature change in this study. A newly developed IRHD (International Rubber Hardness Degree) tester was used to measure the hardness changes of NR and SBR specimens at various temperatures and the hardness values were compared with the Young's modulus. The harness and Young's modulus of NR and SBR showed an abrupt change near the glass transition temperatures. The hardness and Young's modulus were increased by increasing temperature due to the increased random chain conformation of molecules. The effect of temperature on hardness and Young's modulus of NR and SBR specimens filled with carbon black and silica was decreased by increasing filler content.

  • Natural fiber/natural rubber composites were fabricated by uniformly compounding natural rubber and cellulose- based natural fiber kenaf and then by compression molding. The effect of kenaf fiber content on their vulcanization behavior, hardness, tensile properties, tear strength and static and dynamic properties was investigated. The contents of kenaf fiber in the composites were 0, 5, 10, 15, and 20 phr, compared to natural rubber and additives. The result indicated that various properties of natural rubber depended on the kenaf fiber content. With increasing kenaf fiber content, the torque for vulcanization of natural rubber was increased whereas the vulcanization time was reduced as well. The hardness, tensile modulus and tear strength of kenaf/natural rubber composites were gradually decreased with the fiber content whereas the tensile strength and elongation at break were decreased. Also, with increasing the kenaf fiber content the dynamic property of natural rubber was changed more greatly than the static property. The loss factor, which is closely related with the damping or absorption of the energy given to natural rubber, was proportionally increased with the fiber content.

  • Rubber materials with excellent damping property are widely applied for vibration isolators. The dynamic characteristics of the rubber materials for vibration isolators were investigated. Dynamic tests for rubber materials with five different hardness were performed. In dynamic tests for test specimen, non-resonance method was used to obtain the dynamic storage modulus and loss factor. Moreover, the effect of dynamic vibration frequency, strain amplitude and temperature were investigated. As results, the storage modulus and loss factor generally increase when the hardness and frequency increase, and the glass transition temperature is $-50^{\circ}C$ by a large change in modulus and loss factor.

  • Mechanical properties of rubber material are very important in design procedure to assure the safety and reliability of the rubber components. In this paper, the material test and accelerated heat aging test were carried out. In order to investigate the effects of heat-aging on the material properties, hardness, elongation, stress-strain curves and dynamic characteristics were obtained from various test conditions. Also, rubber material coefficients were determined by both the uniaxical and equi-biaxial tensile tests.
