  • The collecting amount by DBH class and contents of mineral and free sugar in the sap of Acer okamotoanum Nakai being autogenous in Ullungdo were investigated. The total amount of sap was 376 l Sap of A. okamotoanum were increased with increasing DBH, 67 l (18%), 121 l (32%) and 188 l (50%) from small (below 18 cm), middle $(20{\sim}28\;cm)$ and large (above 30cm) diameter tree, respectively. Amounts of sap was required by big temperature fluctuation in day and night. The contents of solid, ash and sugar were 3.04%, 0.06% and 3.06% in the sap of A. okamotoanum. Free sugar determined in the sap was sucrose with 30.6 g/l, but glucose, fructose and maltose were not detected. The sap of A. okamotoanum was composed of seven kinds of mineral. The prominent minerals in the sap were Ca and K, and the concentrations of Ca and K were 522 mg/l and 309 mg/l, respectively.

  • Amounts of sap collected by DBH class and contents of mineral and free sugar in the sap of Acer mono for. rubripes indigenous in Geojedo were investigated. The collectable periods of sap of A. mono for. rubripes were 17 days and the total amount of sap was 193 l from 60 trees. Sap of A. mono for. rubripes were increased with increasing DBH, being 40 l (21 %), 49 l (25%) and 104 l (54%) from small, middle and large diameter tree, respectively. This may be due to increase in crown width and extention of root system. Amounts of sap was affected by temperature fluctuation between day and night. The pH and the contents of solid and sugar in the sap of A. mono for. rubripes were 6.5 and 2.40% and 1.99%, respectively. Free sugar determined in the sap was sucrose with 19.9 g/l, but glucose, fructose and maltose were not detected. The sap of A. mono for. rubripes contained seven kinds of minerals and the prominent minerals were Ca and K with their concentration being 441 mg/l and 383 mg/l, respectively.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the optimum condition for sap exudation of Acer mono Max. tree in a site of Mt. Baekun, Kwangyang city, Korea. Amount of sap exudation, air temperature, relative air humidity and tree diameter at breast height (DBH) were monitored for the period of January 5 through March 28, 2008, and correlation analysis of several factors affecting on sap exudation was carried out. As the diameter of Acer mono at breast height increased, the amount of sap was linearly proportional. Sap exudation initiated at February 18, and occurred intensively in the period of February 28 through March 10, resulting in 84% of total sap amount by volume. During sap exudation, the minimum temperature was averaged at $-2.4{\pm}1.5^{\circ}C$ and the maximum at $6.0{\pm}1.8^{\circ}C$, while there was no sap exudation whenever temperature was below or above $0^{\circ}C$ all the day long. The maximum temperature, range of temperature and the maximum, minimum and mean humidities in air were significant factors affecting on amount of sap. The maximum air temperature had the highest correlation coefficient with 0.768 (P < 0.01) and was also considered as the principal factor by partial-correlation analysis. These results showed that sap exudation required daily air-temperature fluctuation from below to above $0^{\circ}C$, and the amount of sap was strongly dependent on the highest daily-temperature and DBH of tree.

  • Vegetation composition and structure of forest community around Mt. Kumbong, Uiseong-Gun, Korea, were studied using a qualitative and a quantitative approach. Vegetation types and various ecological characteristics including constancy classes, relative coverage, species diversity and interspecific similarity of the major component species were analyzed. Seventy relatives were sampled in $100 m^2$ plots. Forest communities were grouped into mountain vegetation and lower-valley vegetation. The former were divided into 3 communities (Quercus mongolica, Quercus variabilis and Quercus dentata communities). The latter was an Acer mono community. Vegetation units were classified into ten groups. Woody vegetation coverage was $50\~65\%$. The lower-valley vegetation type showed from $2.06\pm0.25\;to\;2.31\pm0.26$ in the species diversity. The species showing interspecific similarity over 0.5 with Quercus mongolica appeared to be Pinus densiflora, Quercus dentata and Tilia amurensis in the tree and subtree layer, and Lindera obtusiloba, Fraxinus sieboldiana, Carex humilis and Carex siderostica in the shrub and herb layer, The species showing higher interspecific similarity with Acer mono were Cornus controversa and Ulmus davidiana in the tree and subtree layer, and Philadelphus schrenchkii and Aristolochia manshuriensis in the shrub and herb layer.

  • Among the diffuse-porous woods which arc dominant in Korea and used as construction materials due to their wood quality, ten species of six genus involving seven species of three genus in Betulaceae were studied on the radial variation of structural demenb. The species studied were Betula platyphylla var. japonica, B. ermanii, B. davurica, B. scstata, B. schmidtii, Carpinus laxifora, Alnus japonica, Prunus sargentii. Acer mono and Diospyros kaki. Wood fiber, vessel elements and ray increased rapidly in size from pith to a certain annual ring. After then the radial variation in size of the main structural elements seemed to be divided into three types; levelled off curve pattern indicating constant size(type I), continuously increasing curve pattern showing ever increase in size (type II) and parabolic curve pattern showing the gradual decrease after the maximum (type III), but the variation types by structural dements were different even in the same species. Based on the results from this study, it appears to be reasonable to consider the stabilized age of wood fiber, vessel elements and ray rather than considering wood fiber length in distinguishing mature woods from juvenile woods.

  • Community structure and habitat characteristics of Acer mono stands were studied in Mt. Giri $(127{\circ}35'E.,\;35{\circ}18'N)$ and Mt. $Baekun(127{\circ}38'E.,\;35{\circ}05'N)$. The vegetation was investigated by the Braun-Blanquet's phytosociological method. Distribution of Acev mono was most abundant on eastern and western slopes in valley side. The community structure was composed of 4 layers and average number of species appeared in each quadrat was 24. Habitats were almost covered with exposed rocks and the surface soil was classified to clay loam. The isothermal date lines of Mt. Giri and Baekun were 130 and 120 days, respectively, which is the number of days with mean daily minimum temperature below zero during the year. The daily range of temperature was compared at 4 regions during sap extraction.
