Iron-bearing Minerals in the Kaolin from Hadong-Sancheong Area (하동-산청 고령토 중의 함철광물 연구)

  • 최근 국내에서의 고령토의 다양한 공업적 이용추세는 다량의 고품위 고령토를 필요로 하게 되었다. 그러나 하동-산청지역의 고령토 광석은 저품위가 대부분인 반면 그 양은 막대하다. 고령토의 저품위 현상은 산화철광물과 함철 규산염광물등 고령토 이외의 광물들이 고령토 광석에 다량 함유된데 기여한다. 그릴제거, 자력분리 및 디티오나이트에 의한 침출등 종래의 정제 방법에 의하여 제작된 고령토 정광에는 아직도 상당량의 철분이 함유되어 있어서 정광의 품위가 높지 않다. 고령토 광석으로부터 분리해낸 순수한 할로이사이트는 평균 Fe2O3 0.4%를 함유하고 있으며 이 철분은 할로이사이트내에 구조철로 함유되어 있다. 고령토에 함유되어 있는 함철광물로는 산화광물(적철석, 자철석, 침철석, 티탄철석)과 규산염광물(감섬석, 버미큘라이트, 일라이트, 녹니석)이 있다. 종래의 정제방법으로는 대부분의 산화철광물들은 제거 되었지만 버미큘라이트(Fe2O3 0.9%)와 일라이트 (Fe2O3 1.2%)는 고령토 정광에 계속 남아 있어서 저품위 정광이 되고 있다. 버미큘라이트와 일라이트의 함유가 주로 고령토 정광의 저품위의 원인이 되고 있기 때문에 고품위 고령토 정광을 생산하기 위해서는 이들 두 광물을 제거해야 한다.

Soil Physical and Chemical Properties of Kaolinite Opencast Mines and Adjacent Red Pine Forests in Sancheong-gun (산청군 고령토(백토) 노천 광산 채굴지와 인접 소나무 임분의 토양 물리·화학적 성질)

  • Soil properties in opencast mines are a key factor in reclamation (revegetation) of mining areas. In this study we determined the soil physical and chemical properties of kaolinite tailings, reclaimed areas, and adjacent natural red pine (Pinus densiflora S. et Z.) forests in kaolinite opencast mines in Sancheong-gun, Gyeongsangnam-do. Six sites were chosen for collection of soil samples to determine soil physical and chemical properties at a soil depth of 10 cm. Soil bulk density was significantly higher (P < 0.05) in the kaolinite tailings (1.51 g·cm-3) than in the reclaimed areas (1.19 g·cm-3) and red pine forests (0.93 g·cm-3), whereas air phase in the kaolinite tailings (14.2%) was significantly lower than in the red pine forests (32.6%). Clay content in the red pine forests was significantly higher than in the reclaimed areas (18.7%) or kaolinite tailings (14.8%), whereas soil structural stability index was significantly lower in the reclaimed areas (1.61%) and kaolinite tailings (0.87%) than in the red pine forests (7.75%). Soil pH was significantly higher in the kaolinite tailings (pH 6.68) and reclaimed areas (pH 6.27) than in the red pine forests (pH 5.31). Soil organic carbon and total nitrogen were significantly higher in the red pine forests (C: 36.03 mg·g-1; N: 2.08 mg·g-1) than in the reclaimed areas (C: 5.00 mg·g-1; N: 0.31 mg·g-1) than in the kaolinite tailings (C: 2.12 mg·g-1; N: 0.07 mg g-1). The amount of available phosphorus was not significantly different among the three treatments. The concentration of exchangeable potassium was significantly lower in the kaolinite tailings (0.08 cmolc·kg-1) than in the reclaimed areas (0.21 cmolc·kg-1) and red pine forests (0.30 cmolc·kg-1). These results indicate that, because of high soil bulk density and low soil organic carbon, total nitrogen, available phosphorus, and exchangeable potassium in kaolinite tailings and reclaimed mining areas, soil nutrient management is needed in order to reclaim the vegetation in these type of areas.

Mineralization and Characterization of Boseung Kaolin in Gaya Area (가야 지역 보성 고령토의 광화작용 및 광물 특성)

  • In Gaya area, the Boseong kaolin deposits exhibit locally unusual occurrences such as downward enrichment of kaoin minerals, characteristic hydrothermal alterations (illite and stilbite), and phase relations among kaolin minerals in addition to the extensive weathering of anorthositic country rocks. This indicates that the kaolin deposits seem to be genetically formed as a mixed hydrothermal and residual model. The kaolin ores can be divided into five types on the basis of differences in occurrence, mineral composition and characters. These consist of two types of high-grade ores ranging above 80% in grade and low-grade ores as low as less than 80% including feldspar residuals or the peculiar impurity phase of illite-vermiculite-stilbite. Halloysite and kaolinite are mostly coexisted in the Boseong kaolin, and these kaolin minerals exhibit diverse appearances in crystallinity and morphology. Such a diversity in mineral phase and crystallinity seems to be originated from the complexity in genesis. In addition to these diverse characters of the kaolin, its applied-mineralogical characteristics such as chemical composition, thermal properties, whiteness, viscosity, and etc. made it disadvantageous in terms of ore quality.

Kaolinite Formation by Weathering of Biotite in Sancheong Kaolin (산청 고령토 중의 흑운모의 풍화작용에 의한 캐올리나이트의 생성)

  • 회장암에 함유된 흑운모의 풍화작용을 고령토에 함유된 캐올리나이트의 기원과 관련하여 연구하였다. 흑운모는 사장석이나 각섬석 등 다른 모암광물에 비하여 빠른속도로 풍화되어 고령토화 초기에 흑운모/버미큘라이트 혼합층광물, 버미큘라이트로 변질된다. 버미큘라이트는 계속하여 캐올리나이트로 변질되어 최종적으로 원 흑운모 입자에 비하여 크게 팽창된 캐올리나이트의 가상을 고령토 내에 형성한다. 변질 중인 흑운모에서 방출된 K와 Ti는 각각 일라이트와 아나타제로 침전되며 일라이트는 다시 캐올리나이트로 변질된다. 흑운모가 캐올리나이트의 유일한 모물질이라고 할 수 없으나 풍화과정에서 상당산 양의 캐올리나이트의 생성을 유도하여 고령토내 캐올리나이트 함량 증가에 크게 기여하는 것으로 보인다.

Coagulating effects of several eco-friendly coagulant materials favorable for vermicomposting sewage sludge (하수슬러지에 대한 지렁이처리법 적용에 유리한 몇 가지 친환경 응집물질의 하수슬러지에 대한 응집효과)

  • Coagulating effects of eco-friendly coagulant materials such as zeolite, kaolinite, loess and chitosan upon sewage sludge were evaluated. And coagulating effects of the mixtures of those materials and polymer (polyacrylamide) were also investigated. Coagulating efficiency of loess was higher than that of kaolinite and zeolite at the treatment levels of 2,500~50,000mg/L. Coagulating efficiencies of zeolite, kaolinite and loess at the treatment level of 20,000mg/L were lower than that of 1,000 mg/L of polymer, which meant that single application of those materials in real plant were not feasible. At the treatment level of 1,000 mg/L, coagulating efficiency of Chitosan was much lower than that of polymer, which also meant that single use of chitosan in real plant could be unrealistic because of its high price. However, the application of the mixture of 'polymer 80mg/L + kaolinite or loess 500 mg/L + chitosn 10mg/L' or the mixture of 'polymer 80mg/L + kaolinite or loess 500mg/L' was promising way for coagulating sewage sludge.

  • 점토광물은 자연 산출되는 광물로써 양이 풍부하고 가격이 저렴하여 여러 가지 산업자원으로써 오래전부터 다양하게 활용되어 왔다. 전통적인 주요 활용분야로는 제지 및 코팅 산업의 충진제, 내화재, 세라믹, 유리섬유, 시멘트 등에 90% 이상이 사용되어왔다. 최근에야 고무, 플라스틱 및 페인트의 물성 강화용 충진제로, 넓은 표면적을 활용한 촉매제로 일부 사용되고 있지만 대부분 판상용 점토광물을 대상으로 하고 있다. 고령토가 국내 생산 주요 품목에 들어가지만 그 비중은 2014년 기준 1.9%로 낮으며, 그나마 자급율도 77% 수준이라 수입에 의존하고 있다. 생산되는 고령토의 양이 매년 감소하고 있는 추세이며, 2014년 기준 고품질인 Wa와 Wb의 생산량이 각각 600 톤과 227 톤으로 미미한 수준이며 P급이 4.1만 톤 수준이라 부가가치가 매우 낮은 상품 중의 하나로 보인다. 다행히 우리나라에서 생산되는 고령토의 많은 부분이 할로이사이트 계열 고령토이고, 할로이사이트의 독특한 나노튜브 형태는 신소재 개발과 더불어 부가가치가 높은 새로운 활용분야를 개척하기 아주 적절한 광물이어서 그 특성과 산업적 활용 특성을 중심으로 최신 연구동향과 활용분야를 소개하고자 한다.

Mineralogical Characteristics and Designation of Key Beds for the Effective Surveys of the Jeonnam Pyrophyllite Deposits (전남일원 납석광상의 광물학적 특성과 효과적 탐사를 위한 Key Beds의 선정)

  • Ores of the Jeonnam pyrophyllite province mainly consist of not only pyrophyllite but also kaolinite, and they usually contain minor amounts of muscovite and quartz. We usually call them as porcelaneous stones which usually show lower grade characteristics in the viewpoint of Korean nonmetallic industries. Mineralogical studies for the ores and their intimate formations revealed that another kind of clay minerals could have been produced from the volcanic sediments with similar ages and compositions. Corundum is commoner than the diaspore in the pyrophyllite deposits, and so diaspore can be regarded as one of temporary minerals from which corundum would be finally formed. Kaolinite deposits contain neither diaspore nor corundum, but alunites produced by an advanced argillic alteration are often observed in the upper portions of the kaolin ores. The lowest formation interbedded with pyrophyllite and/or kaolinite ores usually contain purple tuff bed on the uppermost part, and in ascending order, siliceous formation, fine ash tuff and lapillistone are found in the study areas. As ages are becoming younger, amounts of pyrophyllite and kaolinite are radically decreased, or disappeared completely. On the other hand, content of muscovite is slightly increased, and those of plagioclase feldspars and quartz are found to have been preserved from the original rocks during alteration process. Most of ore bodies show rather well bedded formations which are easily discernable in the outcrops, but more effective discremination is desirable where rather massive ores exist. Siliceous beds and purple tuff ones on the upper part of ore bodies would be useful as marker horizons or key beds which have distinct lithologies and extensions.

Effects of Kaolin (Natural Ligneous Clay) Supplementation on Performance and Egg Quality in Laying Hens (고령토(천연목질점토)의 급여가 산란계의 산란성적과 계란품질에 미치는 영향)

  • Two experiments were conducted to determine the effects of supplementing different levels of kaolin (Exp. 1) and effects of age of layers and levels of kaolin (Exp. 2) on the performance, egg and shell quality parameters of laying hens. In Exp.1, 64 laying hens of 58 wks age were randomly allotted to 4 treatments of 16 hens in each. Dietary treatments were basal diet supplemented with 0.0, 0.2, 0.4 and 0.6% kaolin. In Exp. 2 96 laying hens were divided into 6 groups of 16 hens each in a 2 ${\times}$ 3 factorial arrangement (two different ages, 30 and 58 wk and three levels of kaolin, 0.0, 0.2 and 0.4%). In both the experiment there were linear decreases in feed intake (P<0.001), improvement in FCR (P<0.05), and egg production (P<0.05), with increasing dietary kolin level. Supplementation of kaolin had no effect on the egg and shell quality parameters in both experiments. Thus, it is concluded that kaolin may improve performance, and 0.2% level showed the best laying performance.
