Biotechnology is the process of using biological system for the production of materials. Genetic engineering, a subset of biotechnology, is the process of altering biological systems by the purposeful manipulation of DNA It is a new field in biology and no topic in biology is more likely to impact our personal lives and is therefore more worthy of our attention and understanding. The purpose of this study was to investigate students' understanding of the concepts of biotechnology, and a test tool which is made up of 20 basic questions was developed for the study. The subject of this study was high school students and the sample size was 486. In order to find out the source of students' misunderstanding, we also analysed high school textbooks and teachers were given the same tool applied to students. Two-way ANOVA was used for the analysis. Major findings of this study are as following; 1. Mean score of students was 41, and there was a significant difference between the scores of boys and girls(p<0.05). Female students scored higher than male students. The variables "region" and "major" had no significant influence. 2. Students' the most misunderstood concepts were "monoclonal antibody" and "gene cloning". Many students thought that a plamid DNA originally has a useful DNA in it, which is apparently wrong. 3. Mean score of teachers was 82, and the variabes of gender and career did not have statistically significant influence on the result(p>0.05). 4. Teachers got the lowest scores on the concepts of "gene therapy", "the accomplishment of biotechnology in agriculture and medicine", and "plasmid DNA". The results of item analysis implied that teachers' misunderstanding might be a part of the sources of students' misunderstaning. 5. Out of 18 basic concepts selected in the study, only 10 concepts were explained well enough in most textbooks. The results of item analysis indicated that textbooks also could be a part of the source of students' misunderstanding.
The purpose of this study was to develop 'the problem situations' for the Problem Based Learning(PBL) and to examine it's effects on the science achievement and the attitude towards science learning. Also the students' perception on the PBL model was examined. The topics of the problem situations developed were 'the future energy for reducing the green house effect' and 'the Indonesian forest fire and the El Nino'. The coaching strategies for the PBL were designed and implemented to 10th grade high school students in the science classes, the results are follows; First, the science achievement of the group of PBL is significantly higher than those of group of traditional teaching. Second, the scores of the test of attitude toward science learning of the group of PBL is significantly higher than those of group of traditional teaching. Third, the students' perception of the PBL was positive. Many students have interests and motivations in PBL, some students have difficulties in learning on the PBL. In the students' personal reflection notes the step of a problem statement is the hardest one of the PBL model. Therefore, this study suggests that developing the problem situations based on real context is of great importance for implementing a problem based learning model continuously.
The purpose of this study is to develop a measurement tool quantifying the degree of high school students' scientific experience. Based on previous studies, we divided the factors that compose school scientific experience into three categories: general activity experience, scientific inquiry experience and laboratory apparatus experience. While, outside of school scientific experience was divided into general activity experience, interesting activity experience and field trip experience. Items consisting each factor were selected from scientific experience measurement tools used in previous researches, most frequent answers showed in open questionnaire about scientific experiences, and exploratory analysis of textbooks. After the measurement tool developed by pilot-questionnaires and previous researches were preliminary tested and then was secondarily tested for a group of 413 high school students. The content validity and construct validity of the measurement tool was evaluated by two school teachers and two experts in science education and by factor analysis, respectively. The reliability of the tool was estimated with Cronbach Alpha. The results of validity and reliability revealed that the tool was appropriate for measuring scientific experience.

This study conducted a case study on the process-centered evaluation competency of a middle-school/high-school science teacher using Teacher's Process-centered Evaluation Competency (T-PEC) measurement tool. The case analysis shows that teacher A in a middle school represents high competency of process-centered evaluation planning and cooperative communication while the competency of utilizing process-centered evaluation results is low owing to the characteristics of non-standardized areas. Teacher B in a high school shows high level of cooperative communication competency whereas low level of process-centered evaluation execution competency because the freedom given to students is not enough during the process of evaluation. The teacher also shows very low level of utilizing process-centered evaluation results due to the lack of time and the school culture not giving feedback to the students. According to cross-case analysis, teacher A and B both represent the highest level of collaborative communication competency and the lowest level of utilization process-centered evaluation results competency. And the lack of clear criteria for process-centered evaluation leads to different understanding of process-centered evaluation between the two teachers, and teacher B shows low the level of utilizing process-centered evaluation affects results due to the students not being concerned on feedback, security problem, and the reality focusing on the university entrance examination in high schools. Based on the results, this study suggests providing clear guidelines of process-centered evaluation to teachers, introducing an application in order to solve the time-lack problem pointed out as the biggest problem of process-centered evaluation, ensuring objectivity and security about process-centered evaluation results, and building the school culture such as the expanded application of standardized areas in order to implementing process-centered evaluation.

The purpose of this research is to estimate the chemistry teacher's perceptions of Chemistry I course based on the 7th national curriculum through actual class teaching situations and interviews and teaching guidance of an actual class through a lesson and an interview. For this research, four chemistry teachers who have had an experience teaching the chemistry I course were selected. As the results of the research show, chemistry teachers had the correct understanding of the purpose of the Chemistry I course, but they were teaching the concepts of Chemistry II . They thought the reason for the teaching was the national scholastic aptitude test. But according to analysis, the contents of the previous tests were hardly beyond the limit of Chemistry I course. For this research, the chemistry teachers looked for the purpose of Chemistry I course based on the 7th curriculum only at the superficial views, and the teacher's wrong understanding about the tests disturbed the revelation of the spirit of Chemistry I course of the 7th national curriculum.
We investigated the understanding of pre-service science teacher about the chemistry concept of middle school curriculum using some items in National Assessment of Educational Achievement and analyzed the result according to background variables of pre-service science teacher. The result was that there were some pre-service science teachers who select incorrect answer at all items, pre-service science teachers don't fully understand the concept needed to solve item. And the percentage of correct answer at some items was low regardless of selection of chemistry as an elective subject at CSAT(College Scholastic Ability Test). We found some facts through the depth interviews to find the cause of the result. First, the misconception acquired in middle school days is tend not to change until college student. Second, the formation of misconception is affected by the study habit with which solve problem by simple calculation and memory without essential understanding. Third, the study habit with which solve problem by simple calculation and memory without essential understanding could not replace misconceptions acquired in middle school days with scientific concept regardless of selection of chemistry as an elective subject at CSAT.

Oceanic fronts, which are areas where sea water with different properties meet in the ocean, play an important role in controlling weather and climate change through air-sea interactions and marine dynamics such as heat and momentum exchange and processes by which properties of sea water are mixed. Such oceanic fronts have long been described in secondary school textbooks with the term 'Jokyung water zone (JWC hereafter) or oceanic front', meaning areas where the different currents met, and were related to fishing grounds in the East Sea. However, higher education materials and marine scientists have not used this term for the past few decades; therefore, the appropriateness of the term needs to be analyzed to remove any misconceptions presented. This study analyzed 11 secondary school textbooks (5 middle school textbooks and 6 high school textbooks) based on the revised 2015 curriculum. A survey of 30 secondary school science teachers was also conducted to analyze their awareness of the problems. An analysis of the textbook contents related to the JWC and fishing grounds found several errors and misconceptions that did not correspond with scientific facts. Although the textbooks mainly uses the concept of the JWC to represent the meeting of cold and warm currents, it would be reasonable to replace it with the more comprehensive term 'oceanic front', which would indicate an area where different properties of sea water-such as its temperature, salinity, density, and velocity-interact. In the textbooks, seasonal changes in the fishing grounds are linked to seasonal changes in the North Korean Cold Current (NKCC), which moves southwards in winter and northwards in summer; this is the complete opposite of previous scientific knowledge, which describes it strengthening in summer. Fishing grounds are not limited to narrow coastal zones; they are widespread throughout the East Sea. The results of the survey of teachers demonstrated that this misconception has persisted for decades. This study emphasized the importance of using scientific knowledge to correct misconceptions related to the JWC, fishing grounds, and the NKCC and addressed the importance of transferring procedures to the curriculum. It is expected that the conclusions of this study will have an important role on textbook revision and teacher education in the future.
The purpose of this study was to determined the conceptual structure used by earth science teachers to classify metamorphic rocks as well as the criteria applied in the process of classifying metamorphic rocks. To this end, the researchers collected verbal data uttered in the process of classifying metamorphic rock using think-aloud from 21 earth science teachers in middle and high schools in Jeollabuk-do, Republic of Korea. The collected verbal data were analyzed using the semantic network analysis method, and the following results were obtained. First, in the process of classifying metamorphic rocks, earth science teachers classified them based on characteristics such as color, compositional minerals, and particle size, which can be generally observed in rocks, and foliation that appears in metamorphic rocks. Second, earth science teachers recognize the classification criteria for metamorphic rocks and focus on metamorphism such as contact metamorphism or regional metamorphism. However, there were cases where rocks were mistakenly classified through incorrect identification. Therefore, it is necessary to provide sufficient observational information about, and experience of, metamorphic rocks to enable earth science teachers to recognize and relate to the scientific process of identifying metamorphic rocks through the phenomena observed.

As basic data about students' career education in high school are being managed only in forms of NEIS, which is supported by Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, and the information for career education that homeroom teachers have operated by off-line system, it is hard to use them as practical decision support system for students' career education. In this study, we intend to design and embody web-based Student Management Total System by constructing DB of students' e-portfolios, school records and counselling data etc. And our ultimate goal with this system is helping teachers to carry out more effective career education geared to each individual student's talent and aptitude by integrating and sharing information about their career on the web site systematically.

Purposes of this study were to explore the process of experience that science teachers go through when participating in peer coaching meetings to improve teaching ability and to find out factors that affect each process of experience. The data were collected through recording of peer coaching meetings, videotapes of science class, and interviews. All the data were analyzed after transcription. The results of the study showed that even though Teacher K broke the ice and formed consensus among the peers by developing Content Representation (CoRe) at the beginning of the meetings, he became self-defensive rather than receptive of peers' opinions on the recorded class at the discussion session. But as the peer coaching went on, he realized that peer coaching was not about evaluation but rather on improving his teaching ability. In turn, he was able to look at his teaching in a more objective point of view and accepted suggestions from peer coaching discussion. The self-reflection of Teacher K acted as the key factor in the efforts to improve his teaching ability. He sought the concrete alternatives through the class analysis with fellow teachers and showed major changes in his teaching practice from the language habits, pronunciation, and speed of his speech to the interaction with students and class design. However, there was little change in knowledge of curriculum and assessment due to his strong orientation to improve students' grades as an academic high school teacher. Likewise, it was found that while peer coaching exert a strong influence on instructional methods and strategies of Teacher K, his strong orientation to improve students' grades hinders a balanced development of subcomponents of PCK.
