  • Two series of experiments on the performance of beam-column joints in High-Strength Reinforced concrete frames were carried out. Main experimental parameters were : concrete strength, column axial load and amount of joint hoop reinforcement. Test result showed that the ultimate shear strength of exterior joints increased of column axial compressive force and the amount of the joint hoop reinforcements. Through the regression analysis on the 24data, the following equation is obtained $jv_u=(2.935{\times}10-3\;{\rho}jw{\cdot}fy\;+\;0.365){\sqrt{f_{ck}}}$

  • As building structures are becoming high-rise, large-scale, and specialized, the use of high-strength materials increase. Therefore, an analytical model is necessary to appropriately predict the shear strength of reinforced concrete (RC) beams with high-strength materials. This study presents a truss model which is able to reasonably predict the shear strength of the RC beams having high-strength steel bars. Test results of 107 RC beams reported in the technical literatures were collected to check the validity of proposed model, TATM, for the shear strength of the RC beams with high-strength reinforcing bars. They were compared to theoretical results obtained from proposed model, TATM, and existing truss models. The experimental results were better predicted by TATM rather than other truss models, and the ratios of experimental results to theoretical results obtained from TATM were almost constant regardless of the yield strengths of tension and shear reinforcements.

  • This study presents a simple method to improve the bond performance of reinforced concrete (RC) beams having high-strength shear reinforcement. In general, the yield strength and the ratio of shear reinforcements are the main parameters governing the shear capacity of RC beams. The yield strength of shear reinforcement, however, has little influence on the bond capacity of RC beams. Therefore, a sudden bond failure of the members with high-strength shear reinforcement can occur before flexural failure. To estimate the structural performance of the proposed method, four RC beams were cast and tested. The main test parameters were the yield strength, ratio, and reinforcing types of shear reinforcements. The experimental results indicated that the proposed method was able to effectively improve the bond performance of RC beams with high-strength shear reinforcement.

  • This paper reports the test results of reinforced concrete exterior beam-column joints with high-strength concrete. The main parameters of eight specimens were joint failure modes, the compressive strength of concrete, and the head shapes of steel bars. All specimens were designed according to ACI 352R-02 design recommendations. Two types of failure modes were considered; J-failure and BJ-failure. The longitudinal steel bars were anchored by 90 degree standard hooks or headed reinforcement. Experimental results indicated that the current ACI design recommendation limited by the compressive strength of concrete somewhat underestimated the strength of beam-column joints with high-strength concrete. In the specimens showed joint shear failure, the strength of beam-column joints with headed bars was approximately 10 percent higher than that of joints with 90 degree standard hooks.

  • This study predicts the structural behavior of RC beams using high strength shear reinforcement and evaluates current design codes restricting the strength of shear reinforcement steel. Under the present design codes, the yield strength of shear reinforcement steel is restricted to 400MPa. In case that use high yield strength reinforcement steel, could incure heavily crack and deflection at the members of structure, and have not verified ductility capacity, fatigue resisting capacity, shear and torsion resisting capacity, anchoring capacity and seismic capacity. To this end, we evaluate structural behavior of reinforced concrete beams using high strength shear reinforcement.

  • Currently, deep beams are designed according to ACT 318-99 equations derived from experimental data for slender beams with normal-strength concrete. In addition, there is relatively limited information on high-strength concrete deep beams with shear reinforcement. The purpose of this experimental study is to investigate the shear behavior of high-strength concrete deep beams and to grasp the conservatism of ACI shear design provisions. Experimental results on the shear behavior of 22 deep beams under two equal symmetrically placed point loads are reported. compressive strength of concrete cylinder was 800kgf/$\textrm{cm}^2$, and main variables were vertical and horizontal shear reinforcement and shear span-to-overall depth ratio (а/h). Test results showed that for high-strength concrete deep beams with shear span-to-overall depth ratio exceeding 0.75, the vertical shear reinforcement more effectively resisted the shear load than horizontal shear reinforcement. In high-strength concrete deep beams, ACI shear design provisions tended to underestimate the effect of strut-tie action and vertical shear reinforcement and overestimate the ones of horizontal shear reinforcement. Based on the experimental results of high-strength concrete deep beams and shear friction theory, this study modified the equations on the shear capacity specified by the ACI provisions.

  • The high strength materials have been more widely used in a large reinforced concrete structures. It is known that the use of high strength material in RC structures give the benefits of the mechanical and durable properties, but the ductility decreases with an increase in the strength of the materials. In the design of a reinforced concrete beam, both the flexural strength and ductility need to be considered. So, it is necessary to assess accurately the ductility of the beam with high strength materials in order to ensure the ductility requirement in design. In this study, the effects of the material strength on the flexural behavior and curvature ductility factor of reinforcement concrete beam sections with various reinforcement conditions have been evaluated and a newly prediction formula for curvature ductility factor of RC beam has been developed considering the stress of compression reinforcement at ultimate state. The proposed predictions for the curvature ductility factor which is applicable to both singly and doubly reinforced concrete beam are verified by comparisons with other prediction formulas and the proposed formula offers fairly accurate within 9% error and consistent predictions for curvature ductility factor of reinforced concrete beam.

  • The potential shear strength of reinforced concrete beams decreases after flexural yielding due to the decrease of the effective compressive strength of concrete in plastic hinge zone. A truss model considering shear deterioration in the plastic hinge zone was proposed in order to evaluate the ductile capacity of reinforced concrete beams failing in shear after flexural yielding This model can determine the potential shear strength of the beam by using a truss model. The potential shear strength gradually decreases as the increase of the axial strain of member. When the calculated potential shear strength decreases up to the flexural yielding strength, the corresponding rotation angle is defined as the ductile capacity of the beam. The predicted ductile capacity of reinforced concrete beams is shown to be in a good agreement with experimental results.
