  • Climate change are known to have had enormous impacts on plant phenology and thus to have damage on other species which are interacted within ecosystem. In Korea, however, it is difficult to analyze the relationship between climate and phenology due to the limitation of measurement data of plant phenological records. In this study, to be effective analysis of SOG(start of growing season), we used phenological transition dates by using satellite data. Then, we identified the most influential variable in variation of SOG throughout the relationship between SOG and temperature factors. As a result, there is a strong correlation between the SOG and April temperature, TSOGmin($3^{\circ}C$, 12days). This study is expected to be used for predicting plant phenological change using climate change scenario data.

  • In order to improve the accuracy of the deep learning object detection technique, the effect of magnification rate conditions and seasonal factors on detection accuracy in aerial photographs and drone images was analyzed through experiments. Among the deep learning object detection techniques, Mask R-CNN, which shows fast learning speed and high accuracy, was used to detect the vehicle to be detected in pixel units. Through Seoul's aerial photo service, learning images were captured at different screen magnifications, and the accuracy was analyzed by learning each. According to the experimental results, the higher the magnification level, the higher the mAP average to 60%, 67%, and 75%. When the magnification rates of train and test data of the data set were alternately arranged, low magnification data was arranged as train data, and high magnification data was arranged as test data, showing a difference of more than 20% compared to the opposite case. And in the case of drone images with a seasonal difference with a time difference of 4 months, the results of learning the image data at the same period showed high accuracy with an average of 93%, confirming that seasonal differences also affect learning.

  • The purpose of this study is to quantitatively estimate the erosional properties for cohesive sediments on Keum Estuary. Then the spatial variation was evaluated, through analyzing and comparing the seasonal variation of the erosional properties in Keum Estuary with that of the erosional properties in the other sites. As erosional properties of cohesive sediments are also influenced largely by basic physico-chemical property of cohesive sediments themselves, the impact that the basic physico-chemical property has on the erosional properties is analyzed in this study. Erosional tests are performed under the condition of uniform beds. Total 8 times of tests using an annular flume are also conducted in a location, low times respectively by seasons: the fall, winter. Experimental results of erosional tests show that the critical shear stress for erosion varies in the range of $0.12{\sim}0.36N/m^2$ and the coefficient of erosion rate varies in the range of $120.91{\sim}6.72mg/cm^2{\cdot}hr$, over the corresponding bulk-density range $1.15{\sim}1.34g/cm^3$. Although the calculated parameters of erosional properties are remarkably different in quantity compared with those of other cohesive sediments(lake Okeechobee) and Kaolinite, their seasonal variabilities within Keum Estuary appear to be insignificant.

  • Assessing seasonality of precipitation is necessarily required to establish future plans and policies for water resources management. In this regard, a main objective of the study is to introduce an effective approach for assessing the seasonality of the precipitation and evaluate the seasonality through the proposed one. We have used circular statistics to characterize the seasonality on the precipitation in Korea. The circular statistics allow us to effectively assess changes in timing of the seasonality in detail. It was found that peak time on monthly rainfall occurred between end of June and early July in southern coastal area while the timing was delayed in northern part of Korea because of monsoon moving in from south to north. In case of annual daily peak precipitation, spatio-temporal variation of the peak time was increased. It is mainly because of geophysical effects, frequency and paths of typhoons. Finally, temporal variations on the timing of the peak seasons were evaluated through circular statistics by 30-year moving average data. The peak season in the Northen part of Korea (e.g. Seoul and Gangrung) has been moved back from early July to end of July while the peak season has been moved up from middle of July to early July in the Southern part of Korea (e.g. Busan and Mokpo). It seems that changes in seasonality are mostly modulated by variability in the east-asia monsoon system.

  • Data composite methods have been typically applied to satellite-based vegetation index(VI) data to continuously acquire vegetation greenness over the land surface. Data composites are useful for construction of long-term archives of vegetation indices by minimizing missing data or contamination from noise. In addition, if multi-sensor vegetation indices that are acquired during the same composite periods are used interchangeably, data stability and continuity may be significantly enhanced. This study evaluated the influences of sensor geometry on MODIS vegetation indices and investigated data compatibility of two difference vegetation indices, the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index(NDVI) and the Enhanced Vegetation Index(EVI), for potential improvement of long-term data construction. Relationships between NDVI and EVI turned out statistically significant with variations among vegetation covers. Due to their curvilinear relationships, NDVI became saturated and leveled off as EVI reached high ranges. Correlation coefficients between Terra- and Aqua-based vegetation indices ranged from 0.747 to 0.963 for EVI, and from 0.641 to 0.880 for NDVI, showing better compatibility for EVI compared to NDVI. In-depth analyses of VI outliers that deviated from regression equations constructed from the two different sensors remain as a future study to improve their compatibility.

  • Effects of elevated $CO_2$ on leaf phenology of Quercus acutissima were examined using open-top chambers, which had ambient and elevated $CO_2$ concentrations (ambient ${\times}1.4$, ambient ${\times}1.8$). To analyze the effect of chamber, non-treatment block was established near outside of the chambers. In 2013, budburst, leaf unfolding, coloring, and shedding were surveyed, and spring phenology was surveyed in 2014. Thermal sum (base temperature $+5^{\circ}C$) of each phenological event occurred was recorded. In addition, bud samples were collected and analyzed for carbohydrate contents in March 2014. Elevated $CO_2$ concentration advanced budburst and leaf unfolding, and delayed shedding in 2013. However, in 2014, the temperature of the spring season was high, and there was no significant effect of elevated $CO_2$ concentration on spring phenology. Carbohydrates content, such as starch, total non-structural carbohydrate and total soluble sugar, were significantly increased in response to elevated $CO_2$ concentration. It has been proposed that elevated $CO_2$ concentration could extend the growing season of temperate species with increased possibility of frost damage due to early bud opening and leaf unfolding. However, our analysis showed that the increased carbohydrate concentration in bud under elevated $CO_2$ would reduce the possibility of early spring frost damage by acting as cryoprotectant.

  • Oxygen isotope analysis was carried out on a oyster (Crassostrea gigas) from the neolithic age Gagok-ri shell midden site, Dangjin, Korea to determine the seasonality of shellfish gathering and site occupation. Isotope samples were taken from the hinge section of the left valve of the oyster. The isotope values of the shell range from -2.02‰ to -6.05‰ vs PDB. The isotope profile shows a seasonal temperature cycle, providing information related to seasonality of shellfish gathering. The isotope values towards the edge of the hinge are gradually increasing, suggesting progressively cooling and a fall period of shell gathering and site occupation. The result shows that the oxygen isotope analysis using oyster shell hinges can be used for archaeological seasonality studies.

  • The objective of this study is to determine the spatiotemporal influences of climatic factors and atmospheric aerosol on phenological cycles of the Korea Peninsular on a regional scale. High temporal-resolution satellite data can overcome limitations of ground-based phenological studies with reasonable spatial resolution. Study results showed that phenological characteristics were similar among evergreen forest, deciduous forest, and grassland, while the inter-annual vegetation index amplitude of mixed forest was differentiated from the other forest types. Forest types with high VI amplitude reached their maximum VI values earlier, but this relationship was not observed within the same forest type. The phase of VI, or the peak time of greenness, was significantly influenced by air temperature. Aerosol optical thickness (AOT) time-series showed strong seasonal and inter-annual variations. Generally, aerosol concentrations were peaked during late spring and early summer. However, inter-annual AOT variations did not have significant relationships with those of VIs. Weak relationships between AOT amplitude and EVI amplitude only indicates that there would be potential impacts of aerosols on vegetation growth in the long run.

  • The density of heterotrophic bacterial population and heterotrophic activity were measured at monthly interval from March, 1986 to March, 1987 at four sites in the Sudong Stream, a tributary of North Han River. Total bacterial numbers and maximum uptake velocity ($V_{max}$) of glucose ranged as 0.8-$25.2\times 10^{5}$ cells/ml, 0.0006-24.39.$\mu$gC/1/hr, respectively. $V_{max}$ of glucose showed marked seasonal periodicity, with highest values in summer. But density of viable bacteria varied considerably, with no definite seasonal pattern. At the nucontaminated site which located in upstream, heterotrophic bacterial population and activities were relatively low, and small variations were observed downstream flowing except the site where animal originated sewage inputs occurred. And this large input of allochthonous materials and bacteria was an important factor for the stream condition.
