  • Surfactants which have ability to decrease surface tension through surface activation between the interfaces are used as essential major raw materials for detergents and cosmetics. Typical synthetic detergents such as EO (ethylene oxide), LAB (linear alkylbenzene) are made from chemical surfactant derived from petrochemicals, therefore, they are responsible for major environment contaminations and ecosystem destruction, especially of rivers and also cause atopic dermatitis through strong skin stimulus of these small molecular's powerful permeability and lead to cancers if they get into organs through capillary. Now worldwide interest is increasing to develop new natural surfactants and biosurfactants as ecological, biodegradabl, harmless and multi-functional new amphiphillic materials which replace these synthetic surfactants.

  • A model describing the distributions of surfactants and HOCs (hydrophobic organic chemicals) in surfactant/HOC/activated carbon systems for surfactant reuse in soil washing process was developed. The model simulation was conducted for the evaluation of the effect of concentrations of surfactant, HOC, or activated carbons. Phenanthrene as a target HOC, Triton X-100 as surfactant and three granular activated carbons with different particle sizes (4-12, 12-20, and 20-40 mesh) were used in the model simulation. The distributions of HOC were significantly affected by surfactant dosages, especially at around the CMC(s). The results of selectivities for phenanthrene were much larger than 1 at various concentrations of surfactants, phenanthrene and activated carbons, which mean that the selective adsorption of phenanthrene by activated carbons is a proper separation method from surfactant solution. The model can be applied for the design of the surfactant reuse process using activated carbons without extra experimental efforts.

  • Dodecyldimethylethylammonium (DDDEA), a cationic surfactant, and aluminum metal ions were used with bentonite to synthesize to synthesize an improved organo bentonite. Among three different synthesis procedure for organo bentonites, aluminium-pillared bentonite showed the highest DDDEA sorption, which indicated that aluminium-pillared organo bentonite would exhibit the highest sorption capacity for organic contaminants. Aluminium pillared organo bentonite also showed a high sorption capability for phosphorus, while it did not exhibit strong sorption for nitrate. In the meantime, more desorption was observed with aluminium-pillared organo bentonite than ordinary organo bentonites.

  • Organosilicone-based surfactants consist of hydrophobic organosilicone groups coupled to hydrophilic polar groups. Organosilicone surfactants have been widely used in many industrial fields starting from polyurethane foam to construction materials, cosmetics, paints & inks, agrochemicals, etc., because of their low surface tension, lubricity, spreading, water repellency and thermal and chemical stability, resulted from the unique properties of organosilicone. Especially, trisiloxane surfactants, having low molecular weight organosilicone as hydrophobe, exhibit low surface tension and excellent wettability and spreadability, leading to their applications as super wetter/super spreader, but have the disadvantage of vulnerability to hydrolysis. A variety of trisiloxane surfactant structures are required to provide the functional improvement and the defect resolution for reflecting the necessities in the various applications. This review covers the synthetic schemes of reactive trisiloxanes as hydrophobic siloxane backbones, the main reaction schemes, such as hydrosilylation reaction, for coupling reactive trisiloxanes to hydrophilic groups, and the synthetic schemes of the main trisiloxane surfactants including polyether-, carbohydrate-, gemini-, bolaform-, double trisiloxane-type surfactants.

  • The critical micelle concentration (CMC) of sorbitan laurate SP 20 surfactant in this paper was near $7.216{\times}10^{-4}mol/L$ and the surface tension at CMC was about 26.0 mN/m, which showed higher CMC and lower surface tension than those of octylphenol ethoxylate octylphenol ethoxylate (OPE) 10 surfactant. Dynamic surface tension measurement using a maximum bubble pressure tensiometer showed that the adsorption rate at the interface between air and surfactant solution was found to be slower with SP 20 surfactant, presumably due to a low mobility of SP 20 surfactant monomer. The contact angle of SP 20 surfactant solution was observed to decrease with an increase in surfactant concentration and showed a larger value than that of OPE 10 surfactant solution. Half-life time for foams generated with 1 wt% surfactant solution was also larger with SP 20 surfactant, which indicated higher foam stability with SP 20 surfactant. Dynamic behavior study reveals that the solubilization of n-decane oil was much lower with SP 20, which is in good agreement with experimental results of foam stability, contact angle and CMC. Dynamic interfacial tension measurement by a spinning drop tensiometer shows that interfacial tensions at equilibrium condition in both systems were almost the same but the time required to reach equilibrium was longer with SP 20.

  • Batch experiments were performed to determine the feasibility of the surfactant-enhanced soil washing process at various washing conditions for the Kuwait soil seriously contaminated with the crude oil. The soil was sampled at a dried oil pond in Kuwait and its average TPH concentration was 223,754 mg/kg, which was too high to apply the conventional remediation process. Nine commercialized non-ionic surfactants were used for the batch experiment to measure the surfactant solubility for the crude oil because it was reported that they have worked for the soil remediation. Among them, three surfactants having high crude oil solubility were used for the soil washing experiment. From the result of batch experiment, 5% TritonX-100 washing solution showed the highest TPH removal efficiency (67%) for the crude oil contaminated soil. However, because the residual TPH concentration in the washed soil was still higher than the clean-up level in Kuwait (10,000 mg/kg), the repeated soil washing was performed. After five washings with 2% surfactant solution, the cumulative TPH removal efficiency was higher than 96% and the residual TPH concentration in the soil went down below the clean-up level. To measure the desorption capacity of TritonX-100 remained in the soil after the soil washing, the silica beads and the soil were washed five times with 2% TritonX-100 surfactant solution and then they were washed again with distilled water to detach the surfactant adsorbed on beads or soil. After five washings with surfactant solution, 7.8% and 19.6% of the surfactant was adsorbed on beads and soil, respectively. When additionally washed with distilled water, most of the residual surfactant were detached from beads and only 4.3% of surfactant was remained in soil. From the results, it was investigated that the surfactant-enhanced soil washing process with TritonX-100, Tergitol S-15-7, and Tergitol S-15-9 has a great capability for the remediation of the Kuwait soil seriously contaminated by crude oil (more than 220,000 mg/kg).

  • The effect of non-ionic surfactants added by hydroxides was studied to wash HOCs-contaminated soil. The kinds and concentrations of additives-mixed surfactants suitable for the soil washing were found. The effects of temperature on the soil washing were analyzed and the relations of HLB and cloud point were estabilished. As the base strength was increased, the washing efficiency was increased : NaOH>KOH> Mg(OH)$_2$>Al(OH)$_3$. Washing efficiency was not enhanced by Al(OH)$_3$for coagulation effect. When NaOH was added to POE$\_$5/ washing efficiencies by 0.01 M and 0.1 M solutions were increased to 62.5% and 67.3%, respectively. At 1 M of NaOH washing efficiency was decreased to 4.2%. The Optimum concentration ratio of mixed surfactant [POE$\_$5//POE$\_$14/] was 1.8%/1.2% without additives. But optimum concentration ratio of surfactants was changed to 1.2%/1.8% with 0.01 M of NaOH addition. The surface tensions and CMCs of mixed surfactant added by NaOH solutions were investigated. The addition of NaOH reduces the surface tension of more hydrophobic surfactants. The nonionic surfactant of higher HLB showed highed cloud point.

  • This study was carried out 1) to investigate the pH effect on solubilization of phenanthrene by biosurfactant in aqueous system and 2) to evaluate the pH effect on the biodegradation rate of phenanthrene in the presence and the absence of the biosurfactant by phenanthrene degraders. Tween 80, which is a chemically synthesized surfactant, showed greater solubilizing capacity than rhamnolipid. The solubilization capacity can be expressed as a MSR(molar solubilization ratio=moles of organic compounds solubilized per mole of surfactant). The calculated MSR of Tween 80 and rhamnolipid were 0.1449 and 0.0425 respectively. The kinetic study of phenanthrene solubilization by rhamnolipid showed that solubilization mechanism could reach equilibrium within 24 hours. Addition of 240 ppm rhamnolipid solution, which concentration is 4.3 times of Critical Micelle Concentration(CMC), caused 9 times solubility enhancement compared to water solubility. The highest solubilities were detected around a pH range of 4.5-5.5. Changes in apparent solubility with the changes in pH are possibly related to the fact that the rhamnolipid, an anionic surfactant, can form different structures depending on the pH. Two biodegradation experiments were performed in the absence and the presence of rhamnolipid, with the cell growth investigated using a spread plate method. The specific growth rates at pH 6 and 7 were higher than at the other pH, and the HPLC analysis data, for the total phenanthrene loss, confirmed the trends in the $\mu$(specific growth rate) values. In presence of rhamnolipid, maximum $\mu$ values shifted from around pH 5 which showed maximum enhancement of solubility in the abiotic experiment, compared to the $\mu$ values obtained without the biosurfactant. In this study, the increase in the observed specific grow rate(1.44 times) was not as high as the increase in solubilization(5 times). This was supported by the fact all the solubilized phenanthrene is not bioavailable to microorganisms.

  • This study investigated the effect of surfactants (nonionic surfactant (Tween 20), biosurfactant) on enhancing transport of bacteria (Bacillus subtilis ATCC 6633) in geological materials. Column experiments were performed under various surfactant conditions with columns packed with quartz sand (particle size distribution: 0.5~2.0 mm, mean diameter: 1.0 mm). Bacterial mass recovery, sticking efficiency, and other parameters were quantified from breakthrough curves. Results indicate that bacterial attachment to sand surfaces increased considerably in the presence of mineral salt medium (MSM), especially at the inlet, which was due to the increase of ionic strength by MSM. It was observed that bacterial transport in sand columns was enhanced in the presence of surfactant. Results also show that simultaneous injection of both surfactant and MSM or pre-injection of surfactant was more effective in bacterial transport enhancement than after-injection of surfactant. This study suggests that transport of bacteria in geological materials could be influenced by surfactants and their injection methods.
