In this work, poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) nanofibers were fabricated by electrospinning to prepare the nanofibers-reinforced composites. And the PEO powders-impregnated composites were also prepared to compare the mechanical interfacial behaviors of the composites. Morphology and fiber diameter of PEO nanofibers were determined by SEM observation. Mechanical interfacial properties of the composites were investigated in fracture toughness $(K_{IC})$ and interlaminar shea. strength (ILSS) tests. As a result, the fiber diameter was decreased with increasing the applied voltage. And optimum condition for the fiber formation was 15 kV, resulting from increasing of jet instability at high voltage. The PEO-based nanofibers-reinforced epoxy composites showed the improvements of both $K_{IC}$ and ILSS, compared to the composites impregnated with PEO powders. These results indicated that the nanofibers had higher specific surface area and larger aspect ratio than those of the powders, which played an important role in improving the mechanical interfacial properties of the composites.
Brittle matrix composites often have interfacial debonding between the fiber and matrix which may lead to strength and stiffness degradation. The effect of interfacial debonding and fiber volume fraction on the mechanical properties of composite material were studied by using finite element method. Firstly, the modelling of fiber and matrix constituting the composite material was simplified under some assumptions. Traction and displacement continuity conditions were imposed along the boundary of adjacent representative volume elements. In order to obtain the effective material properties of composite material, stiffness constants were inverted. Numerical values of longitudinal moduli in case of perfect bonding were compared with theoretical values obtained by rule of mixtures and yielded consistency. Material properties of composite with large debonding an81e were found to decrease even though the fiber volume fraction increased.

Metal matrix composite(MMCs) have been rapidly becoming one of the strongest candidates for structural materials for high temperature application. It is well recognized that MMCs always experience at least one large cool-down from processing temperature before my significant applied service loading. Due to the large difference in thermal expansion coefficient between the fiber and matrix, large thermal residual stresses generally develop in composites. It was reported from many previous studies that the effects of thermal residual stress on mechanical properties and fracture behavior were much more complex and dramatic than conventional engineering materials. Therefore it is crucial to evaluate the effect of heat treatment which changes the characteristic of distribution of thermal residual stress in MMCs. Single fiber composite(SFC) test based on the balance in a micromechanical model is a quite convenient method to evaluate interfacial shear strength(IFSS) and the failure mode of composite. In this study the effect of heat treatment on IFSS and the microscopic failure mechanism of MMC is investigated by combining acoustic emission(AE) technique with SFC test. The characteristic of AE signal, IFSS and microscopic failure mechanism due to heat treatment condition is discussed.

In composite materials, the adhesion and interfacial properties were the most important factors to obtain high performance of mechanical properties. This review paper had been focused on the micromechanical evaluation methods for the interfacial property historically. The interfacial property of fiber-reinforced composites (FRC) could be evaluated using only a single fiber and matrix via various micromechanical testing methods. Self-sensing due to the fracture behavior of FRC could be determined and discussed more critically and clearly using electro-micromechanical evaluation. In this paper, the research trends for micro-mechanical evaluation of composites was summarized, and their practical applications would be suggested in the future.

The nonlinearity and high deformability of rubber make accurate analysis of the behavior of cord-rubber composites a challenging task. Some researchers have adopted the third phase between cord and rubber and have carried out three-phase modeling. However, it is difficult to determine the thickness and properties of the interface in cord-rubber composites. In this study, a two-dimensional finite-element method (2D FEM) is used to investigate the effective and normalized moduli of cord-rubber composites having interfaces of various thicknesses; this model takes into account the 2D generalized plane strain and a plane strain element. The neo-Hookean model is used for the properties of rubber, several interface properties are assumed and three loading directions are selected. It is found that the properties and thickness of the interface can affect the nonlinearity and the effective modulus of cord-rubber composites.

In this work, glass fiber/nylon 6 and woven glass fiber/nylon 6 composites have been fabricated using glass fiber reinforcements sized with 3-chloropropyltrimethoxysilane(CTMS) having a chloropropyl organo-functional group in the molecular chain end. The interfacial shear strength of glass fiber/nylon 6 composite was measured using a single fiber microbonding test and the interlaminar shear strength and the storage modulus of woven glass fabric/nylon 6 composites were measured using a short-warn shear test and a dynamic mechanical analysis, respectively, informing the effect of the concentration of CTMS on the properties. With increasing CTMS concentration, the interfacial properties of the composites were improved. The results on the interfacial shear strength, interlaminar shear strength, interlaminar failure pattern, and storage modulus with varying the CTMS concentration agree with each other.
Retention of interfacial shear strength (IFSS) of polymer composites at cryogenic temperature application is very important. In this work, single carbon tiber reinforced epoxy compositc was used to evaluate IFSS and apparent modulus under room and cryogenic temperatures. The property change of carbon and selected epoxy for particularly cryogenic temperature application were tested in tension and compression. Tensile strength and elongation of carbon fiber decreased at cryogenic temperature, whereas tensile modulus was almost same. On the other hand, epoxy matrix showed the increased tensile strength but decreased elongation. It can be due to maximum thermal contraction existing free volume in cryogenic temperature. IFSS increased up to $-10^{\circ}C$ and then decreased steadily. However, IFSS at cryogenic temperature was still similar to that at room temperature. This result is very useful to cryogenic application since selected epoxy toughness and interfacial adhesion can keep at such low temperature.
Interfacial properties and microfailure modes or electrodeposition(ED) treated carbon fiber reinforced polyetherimide(PEI) toughened epoxy composites were investigated using microdroplet test. ED was performed to improve the interfacial shear strength(IFSS). As PEI content increased, IFSS increased due to enhanced toughness and plastic deformation of PEI. In the untreated cafe, IFSS Increased with adding PEI content, and IFSS of pure PEI matrix showed the highest. On the other hand, thor ED-treated case IFSS increased with PEI content with rather low improvement rate. In the untreated case, neat epoxy resin appeared brittle microfailure mode, whereas pure PEI matrix exhibited more likely ductile microfailure mode. In the ED-treated case, neat epoxy exhibited more ductile fracture compared to the untreated case. Interfacial properties of epoxy-PEI composite can be affected efficiently by both the control of matrix toughness and ED treatment.
