  • Experiments on steel-concrete interface are performed to investigate and determine the mechanical roles and properties of interface parameters. The intrinsic different nature of bonded and unbonded interfaces are addressed based on the experimental observations that were obtained from two types of tests considering bonded and unbonded interfaces. The unbonded tests are performed for the specimens that are in unbonded when the initially bonded specimens are tested first. Four cases of lateral confinements including pure slip, and low and medium levels of lateral pressure are taken into account to investigate the effects of lateral confinements on interface behavior. It is shown that the maximum shear strengths, the levels of residual strengths and the Mode II fracture energy release rates are linearly related to the confinement levels. Based on the experimental evidences obtained from this study, the values of interface parameters required in a steel-concrete interface constitutive model will be presented in the companion paper.

  • Interface behavior of concrete-infilled steel tube (CFT) was investigated based on the experimental observations and numerical analyses. Laboratory tests were performed for twelve CFTs that consisted of two different cases of diameters where each diameter case was composed of three different cases of shear span length. Thereby, diameter and shear span parameters were considered to prove the question of whether there exists interface slip between steel tube and infilled-concrete. Confining effect of steel tube to infilled concrete was also investigated by measuring lateral strain as well as longitudinal strain. Based on the study, it was concluded that confining effect of steel tube to infilled-concrete is not influential under flexural loading and therefore, the sectional analysis is an effective way to estimate the flexural strength of CFT.

  • This paper presents the experimental results for the interfacial bond behaviour between AFRP strip and steel members. The objective of this paper is to examine the interfacial behavior and to evaluate the interfacial bond stress between Aramid FRP strips and steel plates. The test variables were bond length and AFRP thickness. 18 specimens were fabricated and one-face shear type bond tests were conducted in this study. There were two types of failure mode which were debonding and delamination between AFRP strip and steel plates. From the test, the load was increased with the increasing of bond length and AFRP thickness, which was observed that maximum increase of 63 and 86% were also achieved in load with the increasing of bond length and AFRP thickness, respectively. Finally, bond and slip characteristics had the elastic bond-slip model and it was observed that bond strength and fracture energy were not affected by bond length and AFRP thickness.

  • Interface behavior and confining effects of concrete-infilled steel tube (CFT) composite beam were investigate based on the experimental observations and numerical analyses. For this purpose, laboratory four-points bending tests were performed for the two test specimens of 1,000mm long CFT composite beams. The test beams were made of ${\phi}110mm$ and 4.5mm thick steel tube and 10mm thick steel web and bottom flange. Therefore, concrete infilled in steel tube was in compression through the entire cross section due to the web and bottom flange. Two end section conditions, with end section cap and without end section cap, were considered in experiments to monitor the relative slip displacement at ends and induce confining effects at center. In numerical aspects, finite element analysis considering steel-concrete interface behavior was performed and compared to the experimental results.

  • In this study, the compressive behavior of a 1/12.5 scale model of a wind tower support structure connection was experimentally analyzed. A high-performance cementitious grout with a compressive strength of 140 MPa was used to fill the connection, and experiments were conducted with shear key spacing, the shape, and connection length as variables. When the number of shear keys in the connection is the same, the smaller the spacing of the shear keys than the length of the connection, the higher the shear strength, and for the same spacing and connection length, the higher the height of the shear keys, the higher the strength. In addition, it was found that the strength showed a linear behaviour until the connection slip reached 1.0 mm, and it reached the maximum strength at 7.0 mm connection slip showing a non-linear behaviour as the load increased. It was found that the failure mode changed from interfacial shear failure to grout failure as the strength increased according to the shape and spacing of the shear key, and brittle failure did not occur due to steel fibers.

  • 12 concrete blocks, on which hybrid fibrous sheets (carbon fiber and glass fiber) had been bonded, were subjected to tensile load in order to estimate properties of the bonded interface. the sheet length was varied by 100mm, 200mm and 400mm. It was found that more than 150mm bond length is required to achieve the maximum bearing capacity of the interface. In this study, maximum bond stress $\tau_{F,max}$, ultimate slip $S_{FU}$ of the interface were estimated $\tau_{F,max}$=3.0MPa and $S_{FU}$= 0.175mm, respectively.

  • The transfer of prestress force in pretensioned prestressed concrete (PSC) members is of great concern because it affects directly the distribution of stress around the transfer zone. The design provision of current design code on the transfer length considers only the prestress intensity and the diameter of prestressing steels. However, other factors such as concrete compressive strength and concrete cover may affect greatly the transfer length. The purpose of the present paper is to explore the various factors that affect the transfer length in pretensioned PSC members. The bond stress-slip relation between prestressing steel and concrete was modeled first from experimental data and then this model was incorporated into the interface element. The interface element was used to perform the finite element analysis for pretensioned PSC members. The results indicate that the compressive strength and concrete cover are also very important parameters which affect the transfer length greatly. This means that the current design code, which considers only the effective prestress and diameter of prestressing steel, must be improved to take into account the other important variables of compressive strength and concrete cover. The present study allows more realistic analysis and design of pretensioned PSC members.

  • In this study, we examined the bond performance of FRP Hybrid Bars. FRP Hybrid Bars are developed by wrapping glass fibers on the outside of deformed steel rebars to solve the corrosion problem. The surface of the FRP Hybrid Bars was coated with resin and silica sand to enhance its adhesion bonding performance with concrete. Various parameters, such as the resin type, viscosity, and size of the silica sand, were selected in order to find the optimal surface condition of the FRP Hybrid Bars. For the bonding test, FRP Hybrid Bars were embedded in a concrete block with a size of 200 mm3 and the maximum load and slip were measured at the interface between the FRP Hybrid Bar and concrete through the pull-out test. From the experimental results, the maximum load and bond strength were calculated as a function of each experimental variable and the resin type, viscosity and size of the silica sand giving rise to the optimal bond performance were evaluated. The maximum bond strength of the specimen using epoxy resin and No. 5 silica sand was about 35% higher than that of the deformed rebar.

  • Some solutions to several major problems in ZMR such as agglomeration of polysilicon, slips and local substrate melting are described. Experiments are performed with varying polysilicon thickness and capping oxide thickness. The aggmeration can be eliminated when nitrogen is introduced at the capping oxide layer-to-polysilicon interface and polysilicon-to-buried oxide layer interface by annealing the SOI samples at $1100^{\circ}$ in $NH_3$ ambient for three hours. The slips and local substrate melting are removed when the back surface of silicon substrate is sandblasted to produce the back surface roughness of about $20{\mu}m$. The subboundary spacing increases with increasing polysilicon thickness and the uniformity of recrystallized SOI film thickness improves with increasing capping oxide thickness, improving the quality of recrystallized SOI film. When the polysilicon thickness is about $1.0{\mu}m$ and the capping oxide thickness is $2.5{\mu}m$, the thickness variation of the recrystallized SOI film is about ${\pm}200{\AA}$ and the subboundary spacing is about $70-120{\mu}m$.
