  • Weeds are one of the major constraints to crop production in organic farming systems. This paper reviews major results and techniques achieved with physical, cultural, and biological weed control and their perspectives in organic agriculture. Physical methods includes mechanical, thermal, lighting, electrocution, pneumatic, autonomous robot weeding control techniques. Cultural weed control methods includes mulching, tillage, crop rotation, cover crops and crop competition. Physical and cultural weed control techniques are especially important in organic farming crops where other weed control options are limited or not available without use of herbicides. Biological weed control includes mycoherbicides, innundative biological control, broad-spectrum biological control and allelopathy. Successful weed management in organic farming requires well managed integrated systems of mechanical control using newly developed machines, cultural control and biological control methods. Weed management decision-aid models may also needed to develop to provide greater assurance of achieving profitability and appropriate long-term weed management in organic farming in the future.

  • The characteristics of the areal parts, photosynthetic and respiration rates and stem color were examined in 1- to 5-year-old Green-stem, Violet-stem and Yellow-berry variant ginseng (Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer). The top characteristics, photosynthetic and respiration rates were not significantly different among the three variants. Selfed progency of the Green-stems variant plant produced only green stems, while the others produced green and violet stem in the seedling stage. These results showed that most of the top characteristics of the Green-stem variant were similar those of the Violet-stem and Yellow-berry variants with age.

  • This study was conducted to know the taxonomic features of nuclear ribosomal ITS DNA sequences, ITS1, ITS3 and 5.8S regions, as to nine individuals belonging to four Oxalis species in Korea and an induced species. Sequences of the same regions of sixteen taxa deposited in GenBank were also aligned with those of Korean species as outgroups. The length of ITS sequences aligned in this study is 679 by in total. Evidences, from not only the sequence similarities and divergences but also the phylogenetic and statistical treatments with ITS sequences aligned, were useful for the taxonomy of the genus. The similarity of sequences, among both cauline and acauline taxa, is high as 89% and 95% respectively, but between cauline and acauline taxa, relatively low in the range of 64~69%. The sequence divergences, among both cauline and acauline taxa, is also high as much as 0.36~0.42, but between both cauline and both acauline taxa, low as 0.04~0.06. Two groups between cauline and acauline taxa are paraphyletic, and each group makes a single Glade with a high bootstrap value. The analysis of variance, using ITS sequence aligned, revealed that taxa are significantly different in the level of 0.5%, and O. corymbosa, an induced speices, is also separated from the Korean taxa in the Duncan analysis.

  • To select adoptable varieties in paddy soil with relatively high content of soil moisture, the growth characteristics and ginsenoside content of two-year-old ginseng was investigated in paddy soil with two types of drainage conditions such as poorly and imperfectly drained class, using 4 varieties, Cheonpoong (CP), Yeonpoong (YP), Hwangsookjong (HS) Jakyeongjong (JK). The ratio of survived plant in poor drainage conditions was higher than that in imperfect drainage conditions, and the ratio of discolored leaf in the former was lower than that in the latter. The ratio of survived plant was highest in HS, while lowest in YP. The ratio of discolored leaf was lowest in HS, while highest in YP among 4 varieties. Root weight per plant and yield were more distinctly decreased in poor drainage conditions than those in imperfect drainage conditions. Descending order of yield in poor drainage conditions was JK, CP, YP and HS, while CP, YP, JK and HS in imperfect drainage conditions. Varietal difference of rusty colored root was more distinct than that between poor and imperfect drainage conditions. The ratio of rusty colored root was relatively low in CP and JK, while high in YP and HS. Total ginsenoside content of two-year-old ginseng grown in poor drainage conditions was increased more than that in imperfect drainage conditions due to full growth of root. Regardless of different drainage conditions total ginsenoside content was highest in YP, while lowest in HS among 4 varieties, and there were no distinct difference between CP and JK.
