  • Drilled shafts are used increasingly as the foundations for many types of structures. However, very little knowledge of drilled shaft behavior under inclined load is available. In this study, a systematic experimental testing program was conducted to understand the undrained behavior of drilled shaft foundations under inclined loads. A semi-theoretical method of predicting the inclined capacity was developed through a parametric study of the variables such as shaft geometry and load inclination. Test parameters were chosen to be representative of those most frequently used in the electric utility industry. Short, rigid shafts with varying depth/diameter(D/B) ratios were addressed, and loading modes were investigated that includes exial uplift, inclined uplift, and inclined compression loads. Capacities were evaluated using the structural interaction formula and an equation developed from this experimental study. This new equation models the laboratory data well and is applicable for the limites field data.

  • In this study, the behavior characteristics of vertical and batter piles were analyzed by the model tests and the numerical analyses. Model steel pipe piles with the inclination of 0$^{\circ}$, 10$^{\circ}$, 20$^{\circ}$ and 30$^{\circ}$ were driven into sands with the relative density of 79%. The static compression load tests and numerical analyses using PENTAGON 3D were performed. The bearing capacities of batter piles with inclination of 10$^{\circ}$, 20$^{\circ}$ and 30$^{\circ}$ were 111, 95, and 81% of those of vertical pile in model tests, and the results of numerical analyses were similar to those of model tests. The bearing capacities p.oposed by Petrasovits and Award (1968) were similar to those of model test in the inclination of 10$^{\circ}$, but overestimated in the inclination of 20$^{\circ}$ and 30$^{\circ}$. The skin frictions and end bearing loads were the maximum in the inclination of 10$^{\circ}$ and decreased with increasing the inclination angle.

  • In order to investigate the influence of slanting angle of reticulated root piles(RRP) on their bearing capacities, model tests of compressive and uplift loads on RRP with different slanting angles, which were installed in sandy soils with a relative density of 47%, were carried out. Each pile which is made of a steel bar of 5mm in diameter and 300mm in length, is coated with sand to be 6.5mm in diameter. One set of RRP consists of 8 piles which are installed in circular patterns forming two concentric circles, each of which has 4 piles. Slanting angles of RRP for load tests are 0$^{\circ}$, 5$^{\circ}$, 10$^{\circ}$, 15$^{\circ}$, 20$^{\circ}$, and 25$^{\circ}$. In addition, compressive load tests on circular footing whose diameter is the same as the outer circle of RRP were carried out. Test results show that maximum load bearing capacities of RRP by regression analysis are obtained at about 12$^{\circ}$ and 13$^{\circ}$ of slanting angles for compressive and uplift load tests, respectively. Maximum compressive bearing capacity is estimated to be 13oA bigger than that of the vertical RRP and 95% bigger than that of surface footing. Maximum uplift capacity is estimated to be 21% bigger than that of the vertical RRP. And it can be appreciated that increasing the slanting angle makes the load -Settlement behavior more ductile.

  • On the basis of detailed 3D finite-element (FE) limit analyses, the plastic limit load solutions for pipes with slanted circumferential through-wall cracks (TWCs) subjected to axial tension, global bending, and internal pressure are reported. The FE model and analysis procedure employed in the present numerical study were validated by comparing the present FE results with existing solutions for plastic limit loads of pipes with idealized TWCs. For the quantification of the effect of slanted crack on plastic limit load, slant correction factors for calculating the plastic limit loads of pipes with slanted TWCs from pipes with idealized TWCs are newly proposed from extensive 3D FE calculations. These slant-correction factors are presented in tabulated form for practical ranges of geometry and for each set of loading conditions.

  • This paper investigates critical loads of the tapered Beck's columns with clamped and spring supports, subjected to a subtangential follower force. The linearly tapered columns with the solid rectangular cross-section is adopted as the column taper. The differential equation governing free vibrations of such Beck's columns is derived using the Bemoulli-Euler beam theory. Both divergence and flutter critical loads are calculated from the load-frequency curves which are obtained by solving the differential equation. The critical loads are presented as functions of various non-dimensional system parameters: the taper type, the subtangential parameter and the spring stiffness.

  • Wave force is an important factor which gives a direct affect to stability of the rubble mound breakwater. Particularly wave force has been considered as the main cause of displacement for replaced rubble mound breakwater which permits a little displacement to some degree. But the effect on displacement by wave force has not been considered and reflected in design. Therefore in this study, we compared numerical analysis displacement with field measured displacement so that the effect of wave force on displacement can be reflected in design. Result of the numerical analysis displacement was well consistent with field measured displacement data.

  • The dental osseointegration implant should be enough to endure occlusion load and it's required to have efficient design and use of implant to disperse the stress into bones properly. Solidworks as a finite element analysis program for modeling and analysis of stress distribution was used for the research. The simple crown model was designed on applying conjoined condition with tightening torque of 20 Ncm of a abutment screw between a cement retained implant abutment and a fixture. A $45^{\circ}$ oblique loading from lingual to buccal side on buccal cusps of crown and performed finite element analysis by 100 N of external load. The results by a analysis for stress distribution of supporting bones of fixture were as below. The von Mises stress was concentrated on the upper side of supporting compact bone regardless of the diameters and lengths of fixture, and the efficiency result of stress reduction was increase of fixture's diameter than it's length. Therefore, it's effective to use wider fixture as possible to the conditions of supporting jaw bone.

  • Shaking table tests are performed to investigate the seismic behavior of the batter pile and to bring up the countermeasures to improve the seismic performance of the batter pile. First of all, this study demonstrates how batter piles and vertical piles behave under static lateral loadings. Secondly, the vulnerability of batter plies under dynamic lateral loadings is demonstrated showing the axial forces and bending moments mobilized at the pile heads during shaking table tests. Thirdly, countermeasures to overcome the vulnerability of behavior piles during earthquakes are pursued. The countermeasures investigated in this study include introduction of a rubber element at the pile head and the deck plate connection, and introduction of hinge connection. Finally, the slope of batter piles which induces the minimum pile forces during the dynamic loadings are investigated and found to be 8:3 (Vertical to Horizontal).

  • Lots of shallow tunnels are constructed in the mountainous areas where the stress distribution in the ground around tunnel is not simple, also the impact of stress conditions on the longitudinal load transfer characteristics is unclear. The tunnel construction methods and the ground conditions would also affect the longitudinal load transfer characteristics which would be dependant on the displacement patterns of tunnel face. Therefore, in this study, the slope of the ground surface was varied in $0^{\circ}$, $10^{\circ}$, $20^{\circ}$, $30^{\circ}$, and the longitudinal load transfer depended on the deformation conditions of tunnelface (that were maximum deformation on the top, constant deformation, and maximum deformation on the bottom), and the stress distribution at tunnelface. As results, when the tunnelface deformed, the earth presure on the tunnelface decreased and the load at tunnel crown increased. The load transferred on the crown was influenced by the earth presure on tunnel face. Smaller load would be transfered to the wide areas when the slope of ground surface decreased. When the slope of ground surface became larger, the longitudinal load transfer would be smaller and would be concentrated on tunnelface, In addition, the shape of the transferred load distribution in the longitudinal direction was dependant on the deformation shape of tunnelface. The deformation shape of tunnelface and stress conditions in longitudinal sections would affect the shape and the magnitude of the load transfer in the longitudinal directions.
