A Real-scale Wind Tunnel Testing on a Pantograph for High-speed Train to Assess the Aerodynamic Characteristics (고속철도차량용 팬터그래프의 공력특성 평가를 위한 실모형 풍동시험)

  • Wind tunnel testing on the real-scale pantograph for high-speed train has been conducted to investigate the aerodynamic characteristic of the pantograph at high-speed. The mid-scale subsonic wind tunnel of Korea Airforce Acamedy with 3.5m width, 2.45m height, and 8.8m length test section has been employed. The test model has been supported above 50cm height from the bottom of test section using vertical strut to eliminate the boundary layer generated from the bottom of the test section. The height of the pantograph has been varied in three cases, in both of the normal running and reverse running modes. The resultant lift forces of the pantograph to catenary system in all the cases have been measured and the relation between the test conditions and the lift forces have been extensively analyzed.

  • In the continuing quest for increased turbomachinery efficiency, the part played by blade profile shape remains crucial. The application of a heated thin metallic film with CTA(constant temperature anemometer) to the measurements of the laminar and turbulent boundary layer behavior(shock-boundary layer-interaction) in a transonic wind tunnel. Results of measurements with hot-film sensors on transonic compressor blades are extremely difficult to interpret because of ambiguous probe signals due to the complexity of the local flow pattern. In order to get the explicit information and give the designer to interpret characteristic signals from hot-film probes, a method was developed by comparing the results with other measuring technic results.

Development of Thermocouple Sensor for Thermal Boundary Layer Measurement (온도 경계층 측정용 열전대 센서 개발)

  • This research focused on designing an appropriate thermocouple sensor for a thermal boundary layer with a large temperature gradient. It was designed to minimize the conduction error from a constant temperature wall in a boundary layer. A $79.9-{\mu}m$ thermocouple was chosen, and a five-axis device jig was developed to fabricate a butt-welded thermocouple, which is different from arc-welded junction thermocouples. This was used to minimize the size of the thermocouple junction. In addition to fabricating butt-welded thermocouples, a thorough calibration was conducted to decrease the internal error of a multimeter to ensure that the data from the butt-welded and regular thermocouples were almost the same. Based on this method, a butt-welded thermocouple with a small junction was found to be suitable for measuring the temperature in a thermal boundary layer with very large thermal gradients. Using this thermal boundary layer probe, the thermal boundary layers in a turbine cascade were measured, and the Nusselt numbers were obtained for the turbine endwall.

  • The methods of atmospheric boundary layer generation in test section were reviewed. To utilize conventional aerodynamic wind tunnels as atmospheric wind tunnels, boundary layer growth should be accelerated. To achieve this, improvement of boundary layer generation devices is required and it might be done by CFD. In this respect, CFD application cases in boundary generation devices were reviewed and potential areas were considered. Some cases are tried by Fluent 5 code.

  • The simulation of the air flow over models in atmospheric boundary layer wind tunnel is a research region based on advanced scientific technologies imposed by the necessity of studying the turbulent fluid dynamics in the proximity of the Earth's surface. In this study, the atmospheric boundary layer wind tunnel of UCD is used, the mean velocities are measured by augmentation devices such as roughness blocks and spires. The experimental results of mean velocity profile are well fitted with the value of power law.

Aerodynamic Forces Acting on Yi Sun-sin Bridge Girder According to Reynolds Numbers (레이놀즈수에 따른 이순신대교 거더에 작용하는 공기력의 변화)

  • The objective of present study is to investigate the sensitivity of aerostatic force coefficients of twin box girder of Yi Sun-sin Bridge according to the Reynolds numbers. This paper presents the 1:30 scale sectional model tests conducted at high speed wind tunnel in Korea Air Force Academy. Comparison with results at low Reynolds number obtained in KOCED Wind Tunnel Center in Chonbuk National University is also provide. The Reynolds number dependency of aerodynamic force coefficients were observed at present streamlined twin box girder. The drag coefficient revealed significant decrease of nearby 23% at supercritical region. The boundary layer trip strip was found to reduce the Reynolds number dependency of aerodynamic forces by fixing the location of flow transition.

  • In this paper, the characteristic of pressures had been analyzed with a series of shapes that are pressure probes used in supersonic wind tunnel. When a performance of supersonic wind tunnel is evaluated, the Mach number is calculated by using the ratio of static pressure in test section wall to total pressure in settling chamber. Also the flow condition can be visualized by schlieren system. However a number of limitations exist to measure pressure of test section due to high speed and boundary layer effect. Therefore a specific pressure probe is needed for evaluating flow condition in test section at a various of positions. In the paper, experiments were conducted in terms of some pitot probes and the results were compared and analyzed.

  • 남극의 설퇴현상을 모의실험하기 위하여 폐쇠식 대기경계층난류풍동을 호주 시드니대학토목공학과에 제작 설치하였다. 철강과 100mm높이의 구형판자 및 촘촘한 양탄자등의 실험요소를 사용하여 경계층전단난류를 유도발생켰다. 유도발생된 난류는 호주령 남극령토의 해안지역에 부는 난류와 비슷한 유형을 뛰었다. 자연눈에 대처할 물질을 찾기 위하여 몇몇종류의 가루를 사용하였으나 중탄산나트륨이 가장 적합한 것임이 증명되었다. 남극건물모델주위에 실험을 통해 쌓인 눈의 형태로부터 등고선무늬를 형상화 시켰으며 image processing unit을 이용하여 등고선무늬를 포착한 후 등고선 분석 software를 이용, 눈의 형태와 양을 분석하였다.

  • 남극환경은 남극의 거센 바람 및 이에 수반되는 적설현상을 피하기 위해 땅에서 띄우는 고상식 및 지하에 설치하는, 두가지의 형태를 취하고 있다. 고상식의 경우 건물밑으로 바람을 통하게 함으로써 적설현상을 피하는데 효과적이기는 하나 남극의 거센 바람에 대응하기 위하여 구조적인 문제를 해결해야 하는 취약점을 지니고 있다. 본 연구는 경계층난류풍하를 이용하여 고상식 남극건물에 가해지는 풍하중을 파악함으로서 남극건물의 design guide line을 제시하였다.

Effect of flow bleed on shock wave/boundary layer interaction (유동의 흡입이 충격파/경계층의 간섭현상에 미치는 영향)

  • Experiments of shock wave/turbulent boundary layer interaction were conducted by using a supersonic wind tunnel. Nominal Mach number was varied in the range of 1.6 to 3.0 by means of different nozzles. The objective of the present study is to investigate the effects of boundary layer flow bleed on the interaction flow field in a straight tube. Two-dimensional slits were installed on the tube walls to bleed the turbulent boundary layer flows. The bleed flows were measured by an orifice. The ratio of the bleed mass flow to main mass flow was controlled within the range of 11 per cent. The wall pressures were measured by the flush mounted transducers and Schlieren optical observations were made for almost all of the experiments. The results show that the boundary layer flow bleed reduces the multiple shock waves to a strong normal shock wave. For the design Mach number of 1.6, it was found that the normal shock wave at the position of the silt was resulted from the main flow choking due to the suction of the boundary layer flow.
