  • Linear stability analysis of 2-dimensional wall jet is conducted by using parabolized stability equation (PSE). Wall jet is found to be modelled well by boundary layer approximation except for the neighborhood of the nozzle exit, and the introduction of local similarity variable makes the streamwise basic flow Reynolds number independent. Stability characteristics of the wall jet obtained

  • In this paper, the sound radiation from a clamped circular plate with a viscoelastic layer excited by impact force is studied both analytically and experimentally. The composite plate vibrations are obtained by using the normal mode analysis and the eigenvalues are obtained by a Mindlin plate theory including the rotary inertia and shear deformation, The contact force developed between the ball and the plate with attached layers is obtained by Hertz contact theory. The radiated sound pressure is calculated by the Rayleigh integral. Prediction of the waveforms of sound radiating from the plate with attached layers and a method for reducing noise generation from the plate by impact force are also shown in this paper.

  • Purpose: The consolidation settlement of soft ground is dependent on the distribution of pore water pressure which is also affected by hydraulic conductivities (boundary condition) of layers, thickness of clayey soil layer and surcharge. Results: However, the current consolidation analyses are mostly based on Terzaghi's consolidation theory that assumes the initial pore water pressure ratio with depth to be constant. In this study, numerical analysis are carried out to investigate the variation of pore water pressure dissipation with depth and thickness of clayey soil layer, time, surcharge as well as drainage conditions. Conclusion: Comparative study with Terzaghi's consolidation theory is also conducted. The result shows that Terzaghi's consolidation theory should be used with caution unless it is ideally corresponded to the isochrone.

  • Computational study on the passive control of the oblique shock-wave/turbulent boundary-layer interaction utilizing slotted plates over a cavity has been carried out. The numerical boundary layer profile upstream of the interaction follows the compressible turbulent boundary-layer theory reasonably well, and the other results also show good agreements with the experimental observations, such as the wall surface pressures and Schlieren flow visualizations. Further, the effects of various slot configuration including number, location and angle of the slots on the characteristics of the interactions, such as the variation of the total pressures, the boundary-layer characteristics downstream of the interaction and the recirculating mass flux through the slots, are also tested and compared.

  • Saltwater intrusion in coastal aquifer was investigated using a laboratory model. Salt-wedge profiles were reproduced in a porous media tank 140 cm long, 70 cm high, and 10 cm wide. The experiments were performed with various conditions of porous media hydraulic conductivity, salinity, and ground surface slope to assess relationships on salt wedge location and inclination. Salt-wedge profiles induced by saltwater intrusion were observed in porous media equilibrium state, and compared with previously derived formulas of the Glover (1959), Henry (1959) and Strack (1976). It was found that salt-wedge shape and formations were affected by the water level ratio ($H_F/H_S$) due to high hydraulic conductivity, saltwater salinity and ground surface slope. High $H_F/H_S$ of porous media having high hydraulic conductivity shifted the saltwater interface toward the saltwater reservoir. Increasing surface slope of the porous media caused the salt-wedge profile inclination to decrease. Saltwater salinity also contributed to the location of saltwater interface, yet the impact was not more significant than hydraulic conductivity.

  • The present paper deals with concept design of supersonic inlet based on compressible flow theory and flow control of bleeding in order to guarantee stability of supersonic inlet of ramjet engine in broad range of operating conditions. Shock instability, shock wave-boundary layer interaction and flow separation should be properly controlled to improve performance of the supersonic inlet. Considering shock strength, boundary layer and flow separation, the supersonic inlet is modified from the basic model which is designed under inviscid theory. Consequently, shock is stabilized, and required mass flow rate is obtained. Furthermore, bleeding is applied to the supersonic inlet to maintain performance in off-design conditions. Mass flow condition is adopted for modeling of bleeding effect, and performance of the supersonic inlet is evaluated by changing bleeding locations and numbers.

  • In treating solid-liquid interfaces, it is assumed that the adsorbed layer consists of monolayer and the molecules of the adsorbed layer behave as two dimensional liquid and oscillate harmonically in the vertical direction to the adsorbent. Applying the transition state theory of significant liquid structure to the adsorbed molecules, the adsorption isotherm, entropy and heat of adsorption for cyclohexane-benzene solutions adsorbed on silica-gel G are calculated. The calculated values are in good agreements with those of the observed ones.
