  • Although geophysical methods are useful and generally provide valuable information about the subsurface, it is important to recognize their limitations. A common limitation is the lack of sufficient contrast in physical properties between different layers. Thus, multiple methods are commonly used to best constrain the physical properties of different layers and interpret each section individually. Ground penetrating radar (GPR) and shallow seismic reflection (SSR) methods, used for shallow and very shallow subsurface imaging, respond to dielectric and velocity contrasts between layers, respectively. In this study, we merged GPR and SSR data from a test site within the Cheongui granitic mass, where the water table is ~3 m deep all year. We interpreted the data in combination with field observations and existing data from drill cores and well logs. GPR and SSR reflections from the tops of the sand layer, water table, and weathered and soft rocks are successfully mapped in a single section, and they correlate well with electrical resistivity data and SPS (suspension PS) well-logging profiles. In addition, subsurface interfaces in the integrated section correlate well with S-wave velocity structures from multi-channel analysis shear wave (MASW) data, a method that was recently developed to enhance lateral resolution on the basis of CMP (common midpoint) cross-correlation (CMPCC) analysis.

  • This paper dealt with numerical analysis of sand drain considering the smear effect around drain wells and discontinuous deformation behavior due to difference in rigidity between drain materials and adjacent clayey soils. Biot's equation was selected as governing equation coupled with MODCAM (Modified Cam-clay) model or EVP(Elasto-Viscoplastic) model as constitutive equation. The validity as well as the accuracy of the method developed by author was checked by comparing the proposed method with those by Siriwardane and Ghaboussi using joint element. The FEM analysis developed in this study was applied to both 2-dimensional model foundation and actual foundation. the result of which proved to be satisfactory.

  • The growth of the critical size bubble by diffusion process in viscoelastic medium was treated by an integral method for the concentration boundary layer adjacent to the bubble wall. In this study, we obtained a set of the first order time dependent equations to obtain bubble radius and gas pressure inside the bubble simultaneously. The calculated final cell sizes depending on the initial saturation pressure are in close agreement with the observed ones. The governing equations developed in this study may be used in polymer processing of microcellular foams.

  • Since the surface roughness of adherends affects much the strength of adhesivelybonded joints, the effect of surface roughness on the fatigue life of adhesively bonded tubular single lap joints was investigated analytically and experimentally by fatigue torsion test. The stiffness of the interfacial layer between adherends and adhesive was modeled as a normal statistical distribution function of surface roughness of adherends. From the investigation, it was found that the optimum surface roughness of adherends for the fatigue strength of tubular single lap joints was dependent on bondthickness and applied load.

  • The selection of the support system is an important design parameter in design and construction of the tunnel using the new Australian tunnel method. It is a common practice to select the support based on the rock mass grade, in which the rock mass is classified into five rock groups. The method is applicable if the characteristics of the rock mass are uniform in the direction of tunnel excavation. However, such case is seldom encountered in practice and not applicable when the properties vary along the longitudinal direction. This study performs comprehensive three dimensional finite difference analyses to investigate the ground deformation pattern for cases in which the rock mass properties change in the direction of the tunnel axis. The numerically calculated displacements at the tunnel crown show that the displacement is highly dependent on the stiffness contrast of the rock masses. The results strongly indicate the need to select the support type $0.5{\sim}1.0D$ before the rock mass boundary. The paper proposes a new guideline for selecting the support type based the results of the analyses.

  • Strata of the Kachi-1 well, Kunsan Basin, offshore western Korea, were analyzed by using integrated stratigraphy approach. As a result, five distinct unconformity-bounded units are recognized in the well: Triassic, Late Jurassic-Early Cretaceous, Early Cretaceous, Late Cretaceous, and Middle Miocene units. Each unit represents a tectono-stratigraphic unit that provides time-sliced information on basin-forming tectonics, sedimentation, and basin-modifying tectonics of the Kunsan Basin. In the late Late Jurassic, development of second- or third-order wrench faults along the Tan-Lu fault system probably initiated a series of small-scale strike-slip extensional basins. Continued sinistral movement of these wrench faults until the Late Cretaceous caused a mega-shear in the basin, forming a large-scale pull-apart basin. However, in the Early Tertiary, the Indian Plate began to collide with the Eurasian Plate, forming a mega-suture zone. This orogenic event, namely the Himalayan Orogeny, continued by late Eocene and was probably responsible for initiation of right-lateral motion of the Tan-Lu fault system. The right-lateral strike-slip movement of the Tan-Lu fault caused the tectonic inversion of the Kunsan Basin. Thus, the late Eocene to Oligocene was the main period of severe tectonic modification of the basin. After the Oligocene, the Kunsan Basin has maintained thermal subsidence up to the present with short periods of marine transgressions extending into the land part of the present basin.

  • We develop the weighted-averaging finite-element method which uses four kinds of element sets. By constructing global stiffness and mass matrices for four kinds of element sets and then averaging them with weighting coefficients, we obtain a new global stiffness and mass matrix. With the optimal weighting coefficients minimizing grid dispersion and grid anisotropy, we can reduce the number of grid points required per wavelength to 4 for a $1\%$ upper limit of error. We confirm the accuracy of our weighted-averaging finite-element method through accuracy analyses for a homogeneous and a horizontal-layer model. By synthetic data example, we reconfirm that our method is more efficient for simulating a geological model than previous finite-element methods.

  • For each construction material used, there is certain theoretical limit in sizes. For tall building construction, the reduction in slab weight is the first step to take in order to break such size limits. In this paper, the feasibility of such objective is proven and given by numerical analysis result. For a typical building slab, both concrete and advanced composite sandwich panels are considered. The concrete slab is treated as a special orthotropic plate to obtain more accurate result. For each panel, the deflection under the dead and live loads is compared, since both tensile and compressive strengths of the composites are far more higher than those of concrete. All types of sandwich panels considered, except one case, have self-weights less than one tenth of that of the reinforced concrete slab, with deflections less than that of the reinforced concrete slab.
