  • In this paper, I introduce what Boundary-Shifting theories of vagueness (or Contextualism about vagueness) are and what the Context-Fixing Argument is, which is the most powerful and plausible objection to Boundary-Shifting theories. The basic idea of the Context-Fixing Argument is that vagueness still remains even if we hold the context fixed. Many objections based on this simple idea can be found in the literature on Boundary-Shifting theories. It seems that, without a convincing response to the Context-Fixing Argument, Boundary-Shifters must be in trouble. But, oddly, defenders of Boundary Shifters have said very little about this matter. In this situation, ${\AA}$kerman and Greenough try to defend Boundary-Shifting theories of vagueness by suggesting several answers. In this paper, I critically examine their suggestions and develop a new answer to the Context-Fixing Argument.

  • Remarriages constitute an increasing proportion of all marriage in Korea. In 2010, 21.9% of marriage were remarriages for one or both partners. In spite of such increasing of remarriage, not much attentions were given the issues of remarriage in the academic circle of social welfare in Korea. This study is conducted to understand the nature of remarriage, the family structure in remarriage, the relationship between the boundary ambiguity and the family functioning in remarriage. Although boundary ambiguity is believed to be more problematic for remarriage families than first-marriage families and as such has been the topic of research in the U.S.A and other countries, few studies have focused on this topic in Korea. This study examined degree of boundary ambiguity of 125 samples of remerried women and their family functioning. Also, the study examined the relationship between the boundary ambiguity and the family functioning in remarriage. This study conceptualized boundary ambiguity as an incongruence between physical and psychological presence or absence of family members. The findings indicated that the majority of respondents(67.6%) were categorized as having both no psychological and no physical ambiguity. 19.8% of respondents were categorized as having physical ambiguity, 9.9% as having psychological ambiguity, and 2.7% as having both psychological and physical ambiguity. Statistically significant differences of family functioning in remarriage were found among four groups having different type of boundary ambiguity.

  • 'Boundaries' are divided in various types and expressed in diverse ways. Since the progress of socio-cultural, scientific, technological and ideological changes has been so fast, spaces, including cities and their architecture, are also changing rapidly. It is really hard to catch the general flow of modern architectural situations and the logic behind them since they are very complicated and diverse. It is even more complicated to determine which architectural phases represent the same period and how to provide the accompanying characteristics. Therefore, in this study, the boundary has infinite possibilities. By how to provide the accompanying characteristics. Therefore, in this study, the boundary has infinite possibilities. By reorganizing the structure of the ambiguous boundary and what the ambiguous boundary means itself in the process of thinking of creative designers as well as encompassing spatial design. This study will suggest a formative possibility that can be applied as space.

  • While the conventional edge detection can be considered as the problem of determining the existence of edges at certain locations, the fuzzy edge modeling can be considered as the problem of determining the membership values of edges. Thus, if the location of an edge is unclear, or if the intensity function is different from the ideal edge model, the degree of edgeness at the location is represented as a fuzzy membership value. Using the concept of fuzzy edgeness, an automatic smoothing parameter evaluation and selection method for a conventional edge detector is proposed. This evaluation method uses the fuzzy edge modeling, and can analyze the effect of smoothing parameter to determine an optimal parameter for a given image. By using the selected parameter we can detect least ambiguous edges of a detection method for an image. The effectiveness of the parameter evaluation method is analyzed and demonstrated using a set of synthetic and real images.

  • This paper investigates that the ambiguity of the boundary between interior space and exterior space in architecture appears universally in history and reveals the various aspects of ambiguous boundary in architecture. The space is formed by the relationship with the surroundings and the boundary of two opposite spaces is apt to be ambiguous according to lots of complex factors. Before Modern Architecture the boundary of interior and exterior space had a tendency to be ambiguous by modifying compositional method of material boundary, that is semi interior-exterior space, the reversion of interior and exterior space and space in space. After Modern Architecture the meaning of physical boundary in space is lost along with dissolution of boundary over the society and the boundary of space comes to be dematerialized by the technology and the change of space perception. The phenomenon of deconstruction in spacial boundary accelerate increasingly according to fluid space, mutually interpenetrated space, visual transparency and adjustment of layers. And contemporary technology is collapsing the meaning itself of space division fundamentally.

  • I will propose the radical indeterminacy for solving the higher-order vagueness' dilemma. The radical indeterminacy means that the indeterminacy of 'a is P' implies the indeterminacy of 'a is a borderline case of P.' I will compose my argument two steps: first I will suggest conditions for overcoming the dilemma by analyzing its structure and second I will offer the radical indeterminacy that satisfies aforementioned conditions. I think the higher-order vagueness' dilemma occurs owing to the misunderstanding about the unclarity or the indeterminacy of borderline cases that is an basic intuition of vagueness. So conditions for solving the dilemma are also criteria of adequacy on the theory of vagueness. Thus I will propose II-rule that satisfies above conditions and the radical indeterminacy as a new understanding about vagueness.

  • Previous research on work and life balance mainly focused on workers' passive acceptance of interferences rather than active management of them. However, workers can also actively manage boundaries to enhance work and life balance. To find ways to enhance work and life balance, especially in the context of Smart Work, factors having effects on the work/nonwork interferences and their relationships should be firstly investigated. The results show that in a work domain, both boundary strength at work and job autonomy negatively influence on the nonwork to work interferences; in a nonwork domain, both boundary strength at nonwork and autonomy have negative effects on the work to nonwork interferences.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the ambiguity of the boundary through the composition of section. The building means the compose of the inside space by physical shell. Inside space that has boundary factors like floor, wall, roof and column is surrounded outside space. The factors which compose the boundary was expressed by architects as various analysis, but it has changed as changing of paradigm and information revolution. The inside space and outside space were connected through the system arrangement, so various space could construct by an aspect of relation. The history of architecture was written as the establishment of in-out space by architectural boundary factors, but the space could not divide definitely, composed complex structure, could experience various recognition. The existing study which is focused on Ambiguity of the Boundary is just focused on contemporary architecture. Ambiguity of the Boundary is developed by using glass. The transparency of glass removed the boundary of space, so it can be created free wall, continuity of view. It was Influenced the boundary of the sight and changed the expression of boundary between the space. This study is to analyze the change of boundary awareness and find the ambiguity of boundary in the section.

  • The interests in alternative office systems and solutions (called smart work in Korea) are growing. With the lens of boundary theory, this paper tries to understand the nature of work/nonwork boundaries which smart work will be expected to blur. Boundary theory provides permeability, boundary strength, and interference as its key concepts and an empirical study is performed about the individual perception on those concepts. The result of the survey from telecommuters and/or smart work center users at the Company K shows that they perceive work/nonwork permeability, boundary strength, and interference are asymmetric. The result suggests that asymmetric nature of the work/nonwork boundaries should be taken into account when alternative office systems are brought into use.

  • This paper proposes a novel recognition model, a recurrent fuzzy associative memory(RFAM), for recognizing time-series patterns contained an ambiguity. RFAM is basically extended from FAM(Fuzzy Associative memory) by adding a recurrent layer which can be used to deal with sequential input patterns and to characterize their temporal relations. RFAM provides a Hebbian-style learning method which establishes the degree of association between input and output. The error back-propagation algorithm is also adopted to train the weights of the recurrent layer of RFAM. To evaluate the performance of the proposed model, we applied it to a word boundary detection problem of speech signal.
