  • In the production of high-strength concrete of 80 MPa or more, silica fume is widely used as a binder to ensure the strength safety and pumpability of concrete. The bulk density of silica fume is an important physical property that can have a significant impact on the performance of concrete. Therefore, Understanding the effect of silica fume density on the physical properties of concrete and selecting the appropriate material with the correct density is crucial to ensuring optimal performance in construction projects.

  • This study is conducted on spontaneous ignition temperature and activation energy of Hydroxypropyl Methyl Cellulose(HMC) powder. HMC is a kind of cellulose derivative and used as additives for building material, surface coating, printing ink, adhesives, cosmetics and medical supplies. So this material has been widely used as important additive in the chemical industry fields and a mount of production has increased year by year. Therefore, it is very important to find out the thermal ignition characteristics of its danger and the critical ignition temperature. This study was performed by the Spontaneous Ignition Tester(SIT) and so on. Based on the data of the SIT-II, the critical ignition point of HMC is about $186^{\circ}C$ which is slightly lower than normal cellulose.

  • This paper presents the measured performance of in-situ walls using the measured data collected from various deep excavation sites in urban area. A variety of in-situ wall systems from 57 sites were considered, including H-pile walls, soil cement walls, cast-in-place pile walls, and diaphram walls. The examination included lateral wall movements as well as apparent earth pressure distributions. The measured data were thoroughly analyzed to investigate the effects of various components of in-situ wall system, such as types of wall and supporting system, on the lateral wall movement as well as on the apparent earth pressure distribution. The results wee then compared with the current design/analysis methods, and information is presented in chart formes to provide tools that can be used for design and analysis. Using the measured data, a semi-empirical equation for predicting deep excavation induced maximum lateral wall movement is suggested.

  • The present study investigated the influence of thick cortical endplates on the ultrasonic properties of trabecular bone in a femur with a high fracture risk. Twelve trabecular bone samples were prepared from bovine femurs, and acrylic plates with thicknesses of 1.25, 1.80, and 2.75 mm were manufactured to simulate the cortical endplates using acrylic with a density and a sound speed similar to cortical bone. Although the thickness of the acrylic plates attached to the two sides of the trabecular bone increased, high correlations were observed between the speed of sound and the apparent bone density of the trabecular bone, with Pearson's correlation coefficients of 0.80-0.86. High correlations were also observed between the attenuation coefficient at 0.5 MHz and the apparent bone density of the trabecular bone, with Pearson's correlation coefficients of 0.84-0.91. These results suggest that the speed of sound and attenuation coefficient at a specific frequency measured in a femur with relatively thick cortical endplates compared to the calcaneus could be used as indices for predicting the bone mineral density of the femur.

  • Rheological properties of gelatinized rice starch solutions were investigated with Brookfield rotational viscometer. The 8% starch solution showed thixotropic behavior with yield stress. The alkali gelatinized starch was more thixotropic than the thermal gelatinized one. The time dependent characteristics of starch solutions followed Tiu's model. The value of rate constant $(a_1)$ in Tiu's model increased linearly with shear rate, and was exponentially dependent on concentration and temperature. Temperature dependency of rate constant and apparent viscosity followed Arrhenius type equation and the activation energy were about 14.3 and 6.8 Kcal/g mole, respectively. The $a_1-value$ was found to be useful to evaluate changes in structaral decay on the shearing time of gelatinized rice starch solutions.

  • The apparent strain of temperature self-compensated strain gages at cryogenic temperature is presented. By joining the international round robin test on electrical strain gages at cryogenic temperatures, apparent strain curves of up to the fourth order with respect to the temperature are obtained with different strain gages and different materials. The liquid nitrogen and the liquid helium are employed to get the cryogenic environment. The results can be effectively utilized to determine the real strains by mechanical loading at cryogenic temperature. This paper also describes the optimal selection of strain gages and test materials for the use of strain gages at cryogenic temperature.

  • Absorption and regeneration characteristics of sorbent used in a fluidized-bed process to capture $CO_2$ from flue gas have been measured in a thermo gravimetric analyzer. A sorbent Sorb NH prepared for fluidized-bed process was faster than pure $Na_2CO_3$ in absorption and regeneration reaction rate. Activation energy of apparent absorption reaction of sorbent Sorb NH was estimated as -10,100 cal/g mol and that of pure $Na_2CO_3$ as -12,200 cal/g mol. Activation energy of apparent regeneration reaction of sorbent Sorb NH was estimated as about 12,050 cal/g mol and that of pure $Na_2CO_3$ as about 11,320 cal/g mol.

  • Spray dried $Cr_2O_3$ powder having an agglomerated structure of particles was twice treated into a plasma flame to increase its apparent density. The powder subjected to the first densification treatment did not show the entirely melted state keeping inner particle hollows, and it was fully melted after the second processing only. The powder size as a result of the second treatment decreased, and the apparent density as well as flowability were increased due to melting and surface smoothing effects. But a part of particles after the second densified treatment showed the hollow structure, especially those which were above $30{\mu}m$ in size. This densification behavior of the powder has been qualitatively discussed in terms of the thermal conductivity and inner gas pressure within aggregates exposed to the plasma flame.
