  • This study was to explore factors determining school-based student health screening participation. Participants were six health coordinators in West Virginia, the United States. They have responsibilities in the student health screening and conducted a phone interview. The results are as follows. First, opt-in of health screening came from the interest in students' health, peer pressure, and free screening. Second, opt-out of health screening came from the indifference to a school newsletter, anxiety about an information disclosure, and the fear of drawing blood. Third, the advantage of health screening was provided for free. Fourth, the primary decision-maker was parents, but sometimes was children. Fifth, non-family members also influenced on the participation in the health screening. Therefore, a school newsletter, parents and teachers education, and free screening may be required to improve the participation rate.

Methods: A total of 227 women aged between 30 - 60 was selected by the convenient sampling in W city. The instrument developed by the researcher based on the scales of Champion(1993), Champion & Skinner(2003), and Rakowski et al (1992) was used. Results: The distribution of stages of mammography adoption was as following; precontemplation 30.7%, contemplation 23.8%, relapse 20.2%, action 14.4%, and maintenance 10.8%. Women in maintenance and actors showed high scores in benefits and low scores in barriers. Those in relapse reported high scores in both benefits and barriers, while precontemplators and contemplators showed high score in barriers and low scores in benefits. Conclusion: Despite the rate of mammography participation has increased, the proportion of maintenance stage is still low and that of relapse is high. For those in relapse, strategies to eliminate barriers hindering regular and continuous mammography are necessary. For precontemplators and contemplators, detail information including purpose, procedure and benefits of mammography should be given primarily.

  • Purpose: Recommendation for regular Pap test in the past 3 years as a cue to action affects on an increased likelihood of receiving a cervical cancer screening in that period. This study performed to estimate the association with healthcare access, healthcare provider status, and physician recommendation for Pap test in the past 3 years among Korean American women. Method: Korean Health survey was carried out in 2002. These population-based telephone surveys were conducted with Korean American women who resided in Alameda and Santa Clara Counties, California (n=865). We preformed multiple logistic regression analyses to estimate predictors of physician recommendation for Pap test by SAS 8.2. Results: Korean women in two California Counties were 37.9% who received physician recommendation for Pap test in the past 3 years. The predictors on physician recommendation for Pap test in the past 3 years were health insurance coverage, visiting number to doctor in the past year, and healthcare provider status. For healthcare access, no matter who had enrolled in public or private health insurances, the women were more likely to get the recommendation for Pap test from their regular healthcare provider. Particularly, for ethnicity of healthcare provider, the women were more likely to get the recommendation for Pap test from non-Korean female doctors (OR=6.21, 95% CI=2.63, 14.66), Korean male doctors (OR=2.19, 95% CI=1.30, 3.68), and non-Korean male doctors (OR=2.07, 95% CI=1.15, 3.71). Conclusion: (삭제) Effect of healthcare access and healthcare provider status on recommendation for Pap test among Korean American women in two California Counties would contribute to our understanding of developing strategies to promote adherence of Pap test and reduce morbidity and mortality far cervical cancer among Korean American women in the U.S.

  • "Health examinations" means medical examinations conducted by health examination institutions, including a physical examination, consultation, physical measurement, diagnostic laboratory test (also known as clinical laboratory test, clinical pathology test), pathology test, and Imaging test for checking the health condition and the prevention and early detection of diseases. The types of health examinations include general health examinations, comprehensive health examinations, special health examinations, and other health examinations. The proportion of the general health examination work of medical technologists working at health examination centers has been estimated to comprise more than 50% of the total work. The cost aspect of suspicious diseases can be estimated to be more than 25%. The cost of diagnostic laboratory test has been estimated to be approximately 5%, and the proportion of medical diagnosis use is 70%. The results show that it is time to revisit whether medical technologists are receiving appropriate social, economic, and reasonable policy treatment in health examination work. The future of medical technologists will further expand their professionalism in diagnostic laboratory test and quality control in precision medicine and telemedicine in the future. Therefore, medical technologists will need to participate proactively in government policy decisions related to national health examinations and make efforts to improve treatment.
