  • The architectural site exists in the context of the surrounding environment as the background of architectural design, and the architecture exists in the connection between the site and the surrounding environment therefore, the plan of the building starts from the analysis of the site, and its consequences too meaning can be found in the relation with the surrounding environment. Ironically, however, there are no direct papers describing site analysis with this meaning. Therefore, this paper categorizes the site analysis items around the four environments of Land, Water, Fire, and Wind that constitute the environment of the ecosystem, furthermore, in order to apply the result of the fusion information to the architectural design by synthesizing the organic correlation between the inside and the surrounding environment, i created the '9sectors system', which is a combination of 'horizontal 3 and vertical 3' to provide a more rational and efficient architectural plan. Through the progress of the project using this system, it is considered that it is a more applicable method of the site analysis data than the existing site analysis method.

  • I.M. Pei, 2nd generation Chinese immigrant to America, has been one of the most recognized architects who designs museum architecture through out the world for completing significant projects such as the East Building of National Gallery of Art(1068-78) as well as Le Grand Louvre Renovation(1983-89) to name a few. His museum architecture, in particular, reveals his detailed consideration on viewer's artistic experience by providing well balanced architecture design to support exhibiting objects while showing his sensitivity on overall functionality of space. In recent projects such as Miho Museum in Japan, Suzhou Museum of China, and Museum of Islamic Art of Qatar, reveals his growing interests in considering "local context" in museum architecture. Therefore, the purpose of this study is focused on analyzing I.M. Pei's three museum projects having its concept focused on local context. Through out the paper, above mentioned museums were analyzed and compared to summarize his design characters and concept including site plan, spatial organization and architectural form. As a result, it is evident that I.M. Pei had put full effort to apply oriental context with modernism through out his museums. In particular, his site plan, spatial organization, and architectural form shows visible connection to comply with nature which is fundamental idea in oriental philosophy. While his basic design philosophy has been borrowed from the tradition, his ultimate design concept shows nature friendliness as well as theoretical system of thoughts and emotion and most of all, his design excellency in representing local context.

  • Recently general hospitals in Korea have been actively remodeled. Remodeling is required to extend the hospitals' area and to meet the new medical demand. Eventually it aims for achieving ideal healing environment. Seoul National University Bundang Hospital has also developed the schematic design to open the new hospital in 2012. This large scale of extension is the first step in its expected remodeling cycle. It is essential for the extension of hospital to create an architectural system on the basis of function, and to keep the balance with both the existing buildings and natural context simultaneously. To connect the existing hospital and the new hospital, a hospital street should be designed to make it function as a main pedestrian spine. Space design marketing of general hospital is effective in promoting the hospital image. It can be realized by emphasizing hospital identity through combining cultural program and commercial facilities. Developing hospital design should be encouraged under the EBD (Evidence Based Design) concept spread in USA.

  • This study aims to find the conservation and regeneration plan in terms of preserving and utilizing old wooden houses, regenerating existing buildings, and developing idle land for old dwellings located outside the southern gate of Cheongju, Korea. In the preservation and utilization of old houses, three places in the block where wooden houses clustered are created as conservation houses, and are conversed as cafes, workspaces, and homestays along with the preservation of individual houses. In the regeneration of existing buildings, the street landscape was improved through extension and renovation, new construction after demolition, and exterior renovation for one or two-story buildings facing the roadside. In the development of idle land, it reflects the layout method and open yard space corresponding to the path and orientation of the old house, and the mass was varied and segmented to resolve the medium scale. Accordingly, considering the context, landscape, and environmental aspects of the historical downtown, the development of old dwellings in downtown should shift from a uniform high-rise apartment project-oriented approach to a gradual and continuous regeneration direction.
