  • We investigated the effects of both $CaCl_2$ treatment and modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) (compared with non-packaging on 'Fuji' apples from the Young-Joo region of Korea. Apples were dined into 5% (w/v) $CaCl_2$ solution for 15 min and then packaged with or without LDPE film (thickness: 0.025 mm) before cold storage at $0^{\circ}C$. Weight loss of applies in film packaging was lower than that of non-packaging applies, and the apple firmness resulting from $CaCl_2$ treatment and MAP was better than that of apples receiving control treatment. Also, $CaCl_2$ treatment and MAP resulted in improvements in titratable acidity, soluble solid content (SSC), and decay rate compared to control treatments. However, no significant differences in vitamin C content were found amongst apples receiving various treatment. the results suggest that a combination of postharvest calcium dipping and plastic film packaging may effectively preserve 'Fuji' apples, and that the combined treatment are better than either individual treatment.

  • This paper investigates the mechanical characteristics of waste tire powder-added lightweight soil in which dredged soils, waste tire powder and bottom ash were reused. In this study, 5 groups of soil samples were prepared with varing contents of waste tire powder ranged from 0% to 100% at 25% intervals by the dredged soil weight. The mixed soil samples were subjected to unconfined compression and elastic wave tests to investigate their unconfined compressive strengths and dynamic properties. Test results showed that the unconfined compressive strength and unit weight decreased as the waste tire powder contents increased, but axial strain at failure increased. Also stress-strain relationship of waste tire powder-added lightweight soil showed a ductile behavior rather than a brittle behavior. The result of elastic wave tests indicated that the higher waste tire powder content, the lower elastic wave velocity and the lower shear modulus (G).

  • This survey was conducted to know the post-harvest bulk treatment system for barley, The tendency of barley-bulk treatment in 4 RPC was gradually increased up to 4,458 ton in 2001, but after that time, the amounts was decreased 1,0731on in 2003. There was the big difference on the circulated and the continued systems that was the kinds of drying system they use. The barleys, the harvest and the conveyance method was different on RPCs. Naked barley was only treated, and $90\%$ barley was harvested by the consignment in J RPC, otherwise unhulled barley was treated, and there did not used the consignment in S RPC. Small and mulit combine was used to harvest, and the ratio of bulk was up to $90\%$ in J RPC, but small combine was only used and ratio of bulk was at most $5\%$ in S RPC. It was sell by 1kg in polished and 40kg unpolished barley around year in J RPC, but it was sell by bulk to september in S RPC.

  • In this study, the shear wave velocity of the ground was measured using Flat TDR, and the precision analysis of the measured value and the verification of field applicability were performed. The shear wave velocity measurement value was derived in the field using the piezo-stack combined in the Flat TDR. analyzed. As a result of the experiment, the average value of the change in shear wave speed at the time of grout material injection was 10.15 m/s at the beginning of age, and the average value of the change in shear wave speed after the 7th to 14th days was 65.99 m/s, showing a tendency to increase with age. Also, it was found that dry density and shear wave speed increased as the water content increased on the dry side, and that the dry density and shear wave rate decreased as the water content increased on the wet side as the water content increased. The shear modulus value derived from the field test was confirmed to be a minimum of 17.36 MPa and a maximum of 28.13 MPa, confirming a measurement value similar to the reference value. Through this, it can be seen that the measured value of the shear modulus using Flat TDR is reliable data, and it can be determined that the compaction management of the site can be effectively managed in the future.

  • The compaction properties of the soil change depending on the physical properties, and are also affected by crushing of the particles. Since the particle size distribution of soil affects the engineering properties of the soil, it is necessary to analyze the material properties to understand the compaction characteristics. In this study, the size of each sieve was classified into four in the particle size analysis as a material property, and the compaction characteristics were evaluated by multiple regression and maximum dry unit weight. As a result of maximum dry unit weight prediction, multiple regression analysis showed R2 of 0.70 or more, and DNN analysis showed R2 of 0.80 or more. The reliability of the prediction result analyzed by DNN was evaluated higher than that of multiple regression, and the analysis result of DNN-T showed improved prediction results by 1.87% than DNN. The prediction of maximum dry unit weight using particle size distribution seems to be applied to evaluate the compacting state by identifying the material characteristics of roads and embankments. In addition, the particle size distribution can be used as a parameter for predicting maximum dry unit weight, and it is expected to be of great help in terms of time and cost of applying it to the compaction state evaluation.

  • Korea has the ground which freezes in winter and melts in warmer seasons by turns. Therefore, in designing civil-structures or buildings on such ground, the depth of seasonal frost penetratio must be considered. In this paper, approximate contours of the maximum depth of frost penetration in Korea is presented. It was found that the maximum depth of frost penetration did not have the linear relationship to square root of the freezing index. In order to establish more reliable method to estimate the maximum depth of frost penetration, a new empirical equation is introduced. In the presented equation, the dry unit weight and water content of soil are considered in addition to the freezing index. And the equation is compared with other previous equations used so far.

  • This study was intended to estimate of relative compaction on the ground under the load using of portable FWD. The outcome in the wake of the study is highlighted as below. Viewing the variation of dynamic deflection modulus depending on a number of compaction, when a number of compaction increased to 8 (18.3MPa) from 4 (15Mpa), a dynamic deflection modulus increased 27%, and when a number reached to 12 (27.9MPa), it doubled the value indicated in 4. Viewing the relationship between dry density and dynamic deflection modulus in line with the increase in a number of compaction, a number of compaction by the roller reaching to the degree of compaction equivalent to 95% of max dry density was 13, with a dynamic deflection modulus indicating 27MPa ~ 29MPa.

  • The present study was conducted to measure and predict the leachate generation and to establish the methods of leachate control and handling by both field and lab-lysimeter studies. The change of biodegradable matter, field capacity, dry density, quantity and quality of leachate as a function of time of landilling were measured. The model based on the theory of unsaturated flow and contaminant transport in porous media was developed and simulation model was used for the prediction of movement of landfill moisture and for the strength in leachate in terms of organic and inorganic contaminant. The model constructed from the present study in terms of unsaturated decomposition and transport combined with the evapotranspiration and surface runoff showed good agreement with the results obtained by lysimeter studies.

  • Deformational characteristics of subgrade soils are important properties in the mechanistic analysis and design of pavement system. In this study, to evaluate the effect of specimen construction methods on deformational characteristics of subgrade soils in Korea, resonant column tests were performed for specimens constructed by various methods. Specimen construction method affected to the modulus value but the variation in the normalized modulus reduction curve was almost identical. The effects of specimen construction method on modulus are decreased with increasing confining pressure. The average maximum variation in the modulus value with different specimen construction methods was estimated as 16.8%. The differences in the modulus value of the specimens with same water content and dry density conditions that made by gyratory compaction and impact compaction were very small within 5.2%. The impact compaction method was proposed as a specimen construction method for determining the design input parameter testing considering that impact compaction method is much simpler and require less expensive specimen construction equipment and setup than gyratory compaction method.

  • Application of resilient modulus, representing mechanical behavior of pavement materials, has become general concept for pavement design, analysis and maintenance after '86 AASHTO selected it as a basic input property of subgrade. It is known that resilient modulus of domestic subgrade soil is affected greatly by material factors, such as water content and dry weight unit, and stress components, such as deviatoric stress and confining stress, while effects of loading frequency and loading repeat were regarded negligible. If design based on resilient modulus is to be successfully implemented, design input variables of relevant models should be able to reflect local conditions. In this study, generalized mechanical model for subgrade is proposed. Model parameters are estimated from test results. Verification of the model was performed through finite element analysis using the proposed model, which showed good agreement with measured results of pavement deflections.
