  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the microbial contamination of red pepper powder distributed within Gyeonggi province in 2020 according to the place of purchase, the country of origin, and whether the HACCP certification and sterilization were conducted, and to evaluate the change of quality according to the storage method. Upon collecting and analyzing 100 samples, Bacillus cereus was detected in 3 cases (2 cases in large supermarkets and 1 case in traditional markets) and Clostridium perfringens in 27 cases (9 cases in large supermarkets and 18 cases in traditional markets). The levels of the total aerobic bacteria were not significantly different between the red pepper powder purchased from large supermarkets and traditional markets. However, the frequency of red pepper powder exceeding 7 log CFU/g of total aerobic bacteria was higher in traditional markets than in large supermarkets. Microbial quality was not significantly different regardless of the storage temperature (30℃, 4℃, -20℃) and the packaging method (zipper bag and clean bag) after 7 months of purchase. However, the moisture contents and ASTA color value of red pepper powder stored at 30℃ decreased remarkably after 3 months of storage. It is desirable to store red pepper powder in a refrigerator or freezer in order to maintain its quality during long-term storage.

  • Change orders that occur frequently during the construction phase, af ect the construction performance in terms of cost, time, quality, safety and environment, and place a huge burden for stakeholders of given projects. This study analyzed the causes of change orders and their impact on the basis of 721 cases and a questionnaire of 164 domestic U.S. military construction participants in a total of 24 U.S. military projects. Important factors for change orders in the US military construction projects were engineering change due to design errors (348 cases, 48.3%), user requests change(86 cases, 11.9%), and different site conditions (69 cases, 9.6%). In addition, due to the change orders, construction cost increased by 6.56% on average and construction period was extended by 21.1% compared to the original schedule. As a result, it is anticipated that domestic construction companies can obtain a better understanding of change orders and construction performance, which may be difficult due to accessibility and limitations to military facilities. Also, it is proposed a successor study that guides in the right direction for the U.S. Military Construction.

  • Objective: This study was performed to detect indicator bacteria in drinking spring water samples in Gwangju City and to identify their genus using the VITEK-II system. Methods: The subjects were ten drinking spring water sites in Gwangju. Samples of spring water were taken every month from September 2019 to August 2020. We analyzed for the indicator bacteria Yersinia and microorganisms isolated from the spring water. Result: According to the research results on indicator bacteria, general bacteria in st1-st7 with sterilization facilities in the spring and summer were investigated in the range of 0-2 CFU/mL and 0-12 CFU/mL. In st9, where a sterilization facility was not installed, the most general bacteria were detected (160 CFU/mL). Total coliform and fecal coliform showed unsatisfied rates of 16.7 and 11.1% in spring and 14.7 and 11.8% in summer, respectively. The unsatisfied rates of total coliform for the designated and non-designated spring water facilities were 3.8 and 47.1%, respectively, and for the fecal coliform group they were 2.5 and 35.3%. The difference was confirmed according to the presence of a sterilization facility. Yersinia spp. was not detected in all drinking spring water. Forty-one strains in 25 species were isolated from ten sites. The results classified as major dominant species are Pseudomonas spp. 14.6%, Pantoea spp. 9.8%, Serratia spp. 9.8%, Acinetobacter spp. 9.8%, Citrobacter spp. 7.3%, Bordetella spp. 7.3%, Delftia spp. 4.9%, and Enterobacter spp. 4.9%. Conclusions: Based on the result that various species derived from fecal pollution and artificial pollutants were detected in the non-specified public spring water facilities that many people use, the facilities need institutional complements such as continuous management or complete shutdowns.

  • The objective of this study was to estimate the trends of air quality in the study area by analyzing monthly and seasonal concentration trends obtained from sampled data. To this aim, the mass concentrations of $PM_{2.5}$ in the air were analyzed, as well as those of metals, ions, and total carbon within the $PM_{2.5}$. The mean concentration of $PM_{2.5}$ was $22.7{\mu}g/m^3$. The mass composition of $PM_{2.5}$ was as follows: 31.1% of ionic species, 2.2% of metallic species, and 26.7% of carbonic species (EC and OC). Ionic species, especially sulfate, ammonium, and nitrate, were the most abundant in the $PM_{2.5}$ and exhibited a high correlation coefficient with the mass concentration of $PM_{2.5}$. Seasonal variations of $PM_{2.5}$ showed a similar pattern to those of ionic and metallic species, with high concentrations during winter and spring. $PM_{2.5}$ also had a high correlation with the ionic species $NO_3{^-}$ and $NH_4{^+}$. In addition, $NH_4{^+}$ was highly correlated with $NO_3{^-}$. Through factor analysis, we identified four controlling factors, and determined the pollution sources using the United States Environmental Protection Agency(U.S. EPA) pollution profile. The first factor, accounting for 19.1% of $PM_{2.5}$ was attributed to motor vehicles and heating-related sources: the second factor indicated industry-related sources and secondary particles, and the other factors indicated soil, industry-related and marine sources. However, the pollution profile used in this study may be somewhat different from the actual situation in Korea, since it was obtained from US EPA. Therefore, to more accurately estimate the pollutants present in the air, a pollution profile for Korea should be produced.

  • Purpose: Although numerous systematic reviews or meta-analysis have reported the hypotensive effects of garlic, the application of these results in the area of functional food is limited. This is because the trials used various garlic preparations and patients with differing hypertensive intensities. To validate the use of garlic powder as a blood pressure lowering functional food, we performed the current meta-analysis, focusing on the study of prehypertensive subjects. Methods: Literature search was carried out using various database up to July 2020, including PubMed, Cochrane, ScienceDirect and Korean studies Information Service System, and each study was screened by pre-stated inclusion/exclusion criteria. We identified nine trials that met the eligibility, of which two studies with moderate or high risk of bias were excluded. Results: Meta-analysis of the seven studies revealed that an intake of garlic powder significantly lowered the systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) by -6.0 mmHg (95% confidence interval [CI], -11.2, -0.8; p = 0.025) and -2.7 mmHg (95% CI, -5.3, -0.1; p = 0.046), respectively. Shapes of the funnel plot for both SBP and DBP seemed symmetrical, and the Egger's regression revealed no publication bias. Moreover, duration of the intervention period was inversely associated with the pooled effects of garlic powder on SBP (p = 0.019) and DBP (p = 0.019), and this result was supported by the subgroup-analysis. The daily dose of garlic powder, baseline value of each biomarker, and subject number, did not moderate the effects on SBP and DBP. Conclusion: Results of the present meta-analysis indicate that garlic powder supplements are superior to placebo for improving the BP in prehypertensive individuals.

  • Eight dried ear mushroom products (three domestic and five Chinese products) distributed in Korea were analyzed for 321 residual pesticides, 7 heavy metals, and 3 types of radioactivity. Residual pesticides in the domestic products were not detected. However, chlorpyrifos, isoprocarb, mepiquat chloride, and carbendazim were detected in four Chinese products, all of which were below the allowable residual limit. Among the detected pesticide ingredients, only the residue for mepiquat chloride has been established to be present in ear mushrooms. In the heavy metal test, trace amounts of heavy metals were detected in all samples. However, none of the samples exceeded the allowable residual limits, except for one domestic sample that exceeded the standard value of 0.3 mg/kg for lead. Radioactivity tests confirmed that levels were below the minimal detectable activity value in all samples.
