  • This experiment was performed to investigate the effect of UV-B (4 kJ${\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}d^{-1}$) irradiation and growth inhibitor (50 mg${\cdot}L^{-1}$ diniconazole, 500 mg${\cdot}L^{-1}$) treatment on the overgrowth retardation and the growth and yield afterplanting in plug-grown cucumber, tomato, and hot pepper sedlings. Stem length of UV-B-irradiated and iniconazole-treated seedlings was shortened by 38 and 35%^ in cucumber, 37 and 41% in tomato, and 23 and 23% in hot pepper, respectively, compared with non-treated seedlings. While retarding effect ofhexaconazole waslower that that of UV-B or diniconazle. Leaf area and dry weight alson decreased but ldaf thickness increased in UV-B irradiated or growth-inhibitor-treated seedlings. Even thouth the plant height and leaf area of UV-B-irradiated seedlings ant seedling stage were shorter and smaller that those ofnon-treatedd seedlings, they were recovered to the similar level to the growth of non-treated seedlings 20to 30days after trasplantin. The diconazole-and hexaconazole-treated seedlings were delayed recovery to their normal growth, Fruit yiedl of UV-V-irradiated hot pepper and tomato slightly increased but UV-B irradiated cucumer had similar yield to growth-inhibitor-treated one. It suggested that the use of UV-B irradiation could become a reliable tool of overgrowth retardation of plug-grown vegetable seedlings in greenhouse.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the effect of greenhouse cooling by a geothermal heat pump system on greenhouse temperature and growth of vegetable transplants in summer season. Greenhouse air temperature in day time was $3-4^{\circ}C$ lower in fog plus shading system than in shading, while in night time that was $5-7^{\circ}C$ lower in geothermal heat pump (GHP) plus shading system compared to shading or fogplus shading. system. Plant height of cucumber, tomato and hot pepper transplants was shortened in GHP plus shading compared to shading or fog plus shading system. And Leaf area and dry weight were slightly decreased in GHP plus shading compared to the other systems. Therefore, healthy transplant index on cucumber, tomato and hot pepper was higher in GHP plusshading than in shading or fogplusshading system.

  • This study was conducted to examine the changes in growths of tomato and watermelon seedlings and the relationship among growth parameters which are used to evaluate healthy seedling as affected by shading. Plants were grown under 0%, 25%, 50%, and 75% shadings using polyethylene films. Leaf area index (LAI) of tomato and grafted watermelon seedlings increased under 50% and 75% shading. Total dry weight decreased with increase of shading level. The growth rates of stem diameter, LAI, total weight were faster under 50% and 75% shading with increase of integral radiation than under 0% and 25% shading. Stem diameters of tomato and grafted watermelon seedlings showed no significant differences among shading regimes. Stem diameters of tomato seedlings had upward tendency with increase of total dry weight and shoot height, but there were no significant differences among shading regimes. Stem diameters of grafted watermelon seedlings had no relationship with shoot height. These results indicate that stem diameter of tomato seedlings is not appropriate for assessing seedlings quality but stem diameter of grafted watermelon seedlings with shoot height is available.

  • This study aimed to investigate the effect of night temperature on tomato and grafted watermelon seedlings, particularly, shoot height, leaf area, stem diameter, and total dry weight and relationship among the growth parameters which are used to evaluate healthy seedling. Plants were grown at 10, 15, and $20^{\circ}C$. Leaf area index (LAI) and total dry weight of tomato seedlings weight deceased more significantly under $10^{\circ}C$ than other night temperature regimes. In grafted watermelon seedlings, shoot height increased shapely and stem diameter decreased under $20^{\circ}C$. Increasing the integral temperature, leaf area of tomato seedlings under $10^{\circ}C$ decreased and shoot height of grafted watermelon seedlings increased although temperature integrals are same. The relationships among the growth parameter were changed upon the night temperature. Stem diameters of tomato seedlings had upward tendency with increase of shoot height, but there were no significant differences among night temperature regimes. Shoot hight of grafted watermelon seedlings had no relationship with shoot height. These results indicate that shoot height and stem diameter of tomato seedlings is not appropriate for assessing seedlings quality but shoot height of grafted watermelon seedlings with stem diameter is available.
