  • The purpose of this paper is to investigate the association between residential environment satisfaction and elderly depression with a focus on the mediating effect of physical activity. The survey of Living Conditions and Welfare Needs of Korean Older Persons performed in 2017 was used for analysis. Among total 10,299 who aged 65 years or above and participated in survey, only 10,059 people who answered the survey questions by themselves without missing main questions were included in this analysis. Mediation effects were tested with Baron & Kenny(1986) method and Sobel test(Sobel, 1982). As results, first, residential environment satisfaction was negatively associated with elderly depression. Second, residential environment satisfaction was positively related to physical activity. Lastly, it was found that physical activity mediated the relationship between residential environment satisfaction and elderly depression. The results showed that older adults who satisfied in residential environment were more likely to participate in physical activity, and older people who participated in physical activity were less likely to experience depressive symptoms. Based on these results, the paper suggests the importance of subjective satisfaction of residential environment and participation of physical activity for mental health in later life, and some intervention strategies for Aging In Place.

  • The Purpose of this study is to understand the relationship between residential environment and healthy behavior by examining the effect of environmental stress on psychology and physiology. With anxiety, the acute environmental stressor activates sympathy nerve system and the chonic environmental stressor activates the intenal secretion system because this stress induces depression. Thus, we could find that the continuity of these kinds of stresses brings the chronic disease.

It was tried to set the basic direction of the guideline development by comparing and analyzing related literatures based on the previously identified evaluation indicators of healthy housing of apartment. The major findings were as followings: 1) based on the research conducted before, the characters of shared spaces for healthy housing were classified as physical, mental and social dimensions. 2) According to the comparison and analysis of relevant standards and guidelines, focuses were mostly on the physical dimension, particularly on the human traffic lines of the convenience attributes. Other focuses were on the attractiveness of the apartment complex of the vitality attribute under the mental dimension, and community facilities of the residential stability attributes under the social dimension. Therefore, it was identified that it is required to take complementary measure regarding mental and social dimensions, and design concrete steps to include different attributes of each dimension, in order to develop comprehensive guidelines for shared space.

In addition, these changes would play a key role in terms of reducing healthcare costs and leading a healthy lifestyle. The purpose of this study draws the design methodology of community facilities and each dwelling with healthcare services in apartment complex, which the elderly people will enjoy a better health status. This paper presents the result focused on the welfare building in Gayang 7th apartment complex. The intention to receive healthcare services was investigated by occupants. Moreover, design requirements were drawn through in-depth interviews and the state observation to use the service. In the complex, stronger intention to serve the u-Healthcare services was shown to the pre elderly group than the elderly. Both of them had a problem to use and keep the health equipment due to the fact there is not enough space in the unit. Reporting the observation results, the upright-posture furniture attaching the healthcare equipment and the equipment storage should be prepared in the unit. In the public space, the program for these healthcare services can be divided into three parts, i.e. the health status measurement, the healthcare, and the service connected to the surrounding facilities. The health status measurement can be the basic to the health services and its function should be gradually extended. In the complex, the hybrid type with various functions could be applied owing to a new building for welfare; moreover, semi-independent user should be able to receive the home healthcare service.
