  • This paper investigates the capture of a 12U-sized CubeSat space object using a spider-web structure-based space net. The structural dynamics analysis program ABAQUS is used to simulate the shock-absorbing capability of the space net with a diagonal length of 2.828 m. The space object is modelled as a rigid body, and the space net is modelled using non-linear elastic beam elements. The simulations reveal that the spider-web structure-based space net outperforms the squared space net of the same structural weight in capturing the space object. The numerical simulations are conducted to examine the successful or unsuccessful captures of the space object in various cooperative and non-cooperative motions.

  • Bernard $Dadi{\acute{e}}$ expresses virtue, justice, and goodness by mixing reality and fiction through the life of the spider Kacou $Ananz{\grave{e}}$ in The Black Cloth (le Pagne noir). In Black Africa folktale, especially $Co{\hat{o}}te$ d'Ivoire, virtue, justice, and goodness are important factors. The spider's life is full of imagination and tricks that reveal a variety of lessons: i) material abundance and frustration in the 'Spider and the Tortoise', ii) an autistic life that refuses to separate from the mother in the 'Spider's Hump', iii) leaving a trace of violating the taboo on the sheep in the 'Spider's Ox', iv) the failure of a ploy by hurting others to satisfy individual desire in 'The Dowry'. These diverse stories enable us to understand human characteristics and imperfections by questioning customs of society and value of customs, reinterpreting folktale, and clarifying instructional intentions.

  • This study was conducted to analyze arthropod community patterns in small rice fields associated with different planting methods (water seeding, drill seeding, and hansplanting) in Suwon and Icheon in 1994. Total 15 orders and 45 families of arthropods were collected. The arthropod community was analyzed using guild categories. The arthropods were found in the order of 'natural enemy>pest(phytophage)>non-pest' in their densities in all sites. The pest (phytophage) species were mainly Homoptera and dominated by Delphacidae (Nilaparvata lugens Stsl, Sogatella fircifera Horvath and Laodelphax striatellus Fallen) and Cicadelidae (Nephotettir cincticeps Uhler). They constituted >80% of pest abundance. Differences in pest abundance were not found among rice fields associated with different planting methods. Spiders were the most dominant group in the natural enemy and constituted >90% of natural enemy abundance. Hunting spiders constituted >SO% of spider abundance and were dominated by Pirata subpiraticus Bos. et Str. (Lycosidae). Pacliygnatha clerki Sundevall (Tetragnathidae) was a dominant species in webbing spiders. No differences were found in species richness and diversity in spider community among rice fields associated with different planting methods. The nonpest species were mainly Diptera and occurred abundantly in early growing season and decreased drastically as rice development proceeded. The non-pest abundance was higher in direct seeding sites than in transplanting site, and especially abundant in a drill seeding site.

  • A stem and root rot disease of kalanchoe (Kalanchoe sp.) which is a succulent plant that provides consumers with a durable flowering pot was found in Koyang, Kyounggi province, Korea in May 1998. We found that stems and roots of potted kalanchoe had dark brown spots at the soil level. The causal organism was identified as Pjytophtora nicotianae on the basis of mycological characteristics. The fungus produced markedly papillate, ovoid to spherical sporangia, and abundant chlamydospores. Sporangia were 20∼48$\times$24∼64㎛(avg. 35.0$\times$47.3㎛) in size, and optimum temperature for the mycelial growth of the isolate was 30$\^{C}$. The fungus showed relatively different pathogenicity to 14 kalanchoe cultivars including K. blossfelana cv. Florus. cultivars florsu, calypso, Maya, and Redsing were susceptible to thedisease in root dip inoculation. This is the first report demonstrating the stem rot on kalanchoe caused by P. nicotianae in Korea.

  • In 2002 and 2003, Phytophthora blight on Daphne odora occurred in fields at Waryong Mountain, Sacheon city, Korea. The disease usually initiated on the root and crown of the plant. Crown lesions began with light brown as water-soaking. Infection rate of the disease reached up to 60% in a heavily infested fields. The causal fungus was identified as Phytophthora nicotianae based on following mycological characteristics. Sporangium: readily formed in water, papillate, noncaducous, ovoid to spherical, 23~$56{\times}$~34 $\mu\textrm{m}$ in size. Oogonium: spherical, smooth walled, 18~26 $\mu\textrm{m}$ in size. Oospore: aplerotic, globose, 16~24 $\mu\textrm{m}$ in size. Antheridium: amphigynous, unicellula, spherical. Chlamydospore: abundant, spherical, 16~32 $\mu\textrm{m}$ in size. Sexuality: heterothallic. Optimum growth temperature was about 25~$30^{\circ}C$. Pathogenicity of the isolate was confirmed on host plant and the fungus was identified as Phytophthora nicotianae. This is the first report of Phytophthora blight of Daphne odora in Korea.
