  • In this study, nonlinear analysis of steel plane frame was performed using the refined plastic hinge method of advanced analysis techniques. In deterioration of stiffness in plastic zone, influences by flexural bending, residual stress, geometrical non-linearity, and semi-rigid connection are considered. And also, further reduced tangent modulus was used for geometrical non-linearity, top and seat angle were chosen for semi-rigid connection. Furthermore, 3 parameter power model was used for moment-rotation behaviour of beam to column connection. The loading conditions are combined with axial and lateral force and the inverse triangle distribution of lateral and eight type of analytical models were used in analysis. The results of analyses were compared with semi-rigid and rigid connection on behaviour of numerical analysis models. And also, the behaviors of frame with changes of semi-rigidity were analyzed by using the results obtained from MIIDAS-GENw.

  • The dynamic responses of structure under impulsive loading have been investigated according to its duration, based on the theory of viscoplasticity which can appropriately represent the effects of plasticity and rheology simultaneously. The viscoplastic model has been implemented into the two-dimensional finite element system to solve plane stress, plane strain or axi-symmetric problems, and the implicit integration scheme, of which solutions are unconditionally stable for relatively large time step length, has been developed to simulate visoplastic straining with deriving the explicit relationship between stress and strain at a material point level. After simulation, one carefully concludes that the duration as well as magnitude of impulsive loading plays an important role in design of structures.

  • The load distribution and deflection of offshore piles are investigated by lateral load-transfer curve method (p-y curve). Special attention is given to the soil-pile interaction and soil resistance of 3D wedge failure mode. A framework for determining a hyperbolic p-y curve is proposed based on theoretical analysis and experimental load test results. The methods for determining appropriate material parameters needed for constructing the proposed p-y curves are presented in this paper. Through comparisons with field case studies, it was found that the proposed method in the present study estimates reasonably the load transfer behavior of pile, and thus, the computed pile responses, such as bending moment and lateral displacement, agree well with the actual measured responses.

  • This paper describes the applicability of FEA(Finite Element Analysis) to the simulation of pile pullout behavior under various soil conditions (relative density and fines content), in order to evaluate reasonably the pullout resistance of pile. That is, the results of previous research (You et al., 2018) were analyzed by FEA under the same conditions. The FEA results showed that axisymmetric analysis using virtual ground was able to evaluate the skin friction of the pile. Also, axisymmetric analysis, which can apply the shear resistance characteristics of the pile-soil interface in various soil conditions, could be used as an analytical method that can simulate a reasonable pile pullout behavior. Therefore, the analytical model proposed in this study was able to simulate appropriately the pullout behavior based on the stress-strain relationship of the pile-soil interface.

  • This paper presents an investigation on the change in the statical behavior and the ultimate capacity of steel cable-stayed bridges after cable failure. Cable failure can occur due to fire, direct vehicle clash accidents, cable or anchorage fatigue, and so on. Moreover, the cable may be temporarily disconnected during cable replacement work. When cable failure occurs, the load, that was supported by the broken cable is first transferred to another cable. Then the structural state changes due to the interaction between the girder, mast, and cables. Moreover, it can be predicted that the ultimate capacity will decrease after cable failure, because of the loss of the support system. In this study, the analysis method is suggested to find the new equilibrium state after cable failure based on the theory of nonlinear finite element analysis. Moreover, the ultimate analysis method is also suggested to analyze the ultimate behavior of live loads after cable failure. For a more rational analysis, a three-step analysis procedure is suggested and used, which consisted of initial shape analysis, cable failure analysis, and live load analysis. Using this analysis method, an analytical study was performed to investigate the changes in the structural state and ultimate behavior of steel cable-stayed bridges.

  • In this paper, we introduce a newly developed winding model to simulate the motion of underwater cable consisting of winch drums. It is assumed that only tension affects the underwater cable motion. This assumption is suitable for simulating the underwater cable motion towed by a navel vessel in a straight ahead maneuver. The underwater cable is discretized using Nodal Position Finite Element Method. This numerical method is known to be suitable for predicting the underwater cable motion with large deformation because it can express geometric nonlinearity. In this paper, the validity of the numerical method was secured by comparing it with the depth information of towing cable measured through sea experiments.

  • Fibers play a role to increase the tensile strength and cracking resistance of concrete structures. The post cracking behavior must be clarified to predict cracking resistance of fiber reinforced concrete. The purpose of this study is to develop a realistic analysis method for the post cracking behavior of synthetic fiber reinforced concrete members. For this purpose, the cracked section is assumed to behave as a rigid body and the pullout behavior of single fiber is employed. A probabilistic approach is used to calculate effective number of fibers across crack faces. The existing theory is compared with test data and shows good agreement. The proposed theory can be efficiently used to describe the load-deflection behavior, moment-curvature relation, load-crack width relation of synthetic fiber reinforced concrete beams.

  • Rock is a very complex and heterogeneous material, containing structural flaws due to geologic generation process. Because of those structural flaws, deformation and failure of rock when subjected to differential compressive stresses is non-linear. To simulate the non-linear behavior of rock, mechanical crack models, that is, sliding and shear crack models have been used in several studies. In those studies, non-linear stress-strain curves and various behaviors of rock including the changes of effective elastic moduli ($E_1$, $E_2$, ${\nu}_1$, ${\nu}_2$, $G_2$) due to crack growth were simulated (Kemeny, 1993; Jeon, 1996, 1998). Most of the studies have mainly focused on the verification of the mechanical crack model with relatively less attempt to apply it to practical purposes such as numerical analysis for underground and/or slope design. In this study, the validity of mechanical crack model was checked out by simulating the non-linear behavior of rock and consequently it was applied to a practical numerical analysis, finite element analysis commonly used.
