The purpose of this study is to find the difference of the climacteric symptoms and quality of life according to hormone replacement therapy (HRT) in climacteric women. The research design was a descriptive survey with questionaries. A convenience sample of 181 climacteric women aged 45-65 who had climacteric symptoms were selected in Kwangju city, Korea. Sixty-six climacteric women among those subjects were receiving HRT at K university hospital in Kwangju city. Data were collected by the interview with questionaries from Feb 3. 1999 to March 25, 1999. Climacteric symptoms were measured using scores developed by Neugarten(1965) and modified by Park(1989), and the quality of life scale related to climacteric symptoms developed by Hildtich(1996) and modified Kim(1998). Data were analyzed by $x^2$-test, t-test, ANOVA and Pearson's correlation procedures, using SAS/win PC+. The results were as follows ; 1. No statistically significant differences were found between the receiving HRT group and not receiving HRT group in demographic, obstetrical and health related characteristics. 2. There were no significant difference on the climacteric symptoms between the group of women receiving HRT (score 2.4) and the group of women who were not (score 2.6) except psychological area (t= 2.407, p= 0.017). 3. The quality of life of the group of women receiving HRT was significantly higher than that the group of women who were not (t=2.151, p=.032). 4. The quality of life of the group of women receiving HRT were high scores There were significantly high of the quality of life in the vaso-motor change area (t=2.634, p= 0.009), psycho-social change area (t=3.239, p=0.001), and physical change area (t=2.031, p=0,043) in the group of receiving HRT compared to not receiving HRT group. 5. The variables showed significantly differences on the degree of climacteric symptoms of the group of women not receiving HRT were the subjective health state (t=15.81, p=0.000), age (t=7.50, p=0.007), feeling of menopause (t=30.88, p=0,000) and climacteric periods (t=8.66, p=0.003), and receiving HRT were number of para (t=3.95, p=0.050) and feeling of menopause (t=3.94, p=0.050). 6. The variables showed significantly difference on the quality of life of the group of women not receiving HRT were the subjective health state (t=4.14, p=0.044) and feeling of menopause (t=10.86, p=0.001). 7. There were significantly positive correlations between the climacteric symptoms and the quality of life in climacteric women (r=0.512, p=0.000).
This study was performed to examine the combined effects of gamma linolenic acid and isoflavone supplementation on menopausal symptoms and serum lipids in 73 postmenopausal women. A total subjects were randomly assigned to isoflavone (30 mg) + gamma-linolenic acid (110 mg) group or placebo group. We measured menopausal symptoms by modified Kupperman Index (KI) and oxidized LDL, lipid peroxides, blood components and anthropometric parameters before and after the 12 week intervention period. After the 12 weeks of supplementation, supplement group and placebo group showed a significant reduction of modified kupperman index (p < 0.001). Isoflavone (30 mg) + gamma-linolenic acid (110 mg) supplement group showed a significant reduction of oxidized LDL cholesterol concentration (p = 0.006) whereas placebo group did not show significant change. Isoflavone and gamma-linolenic acid consumption did not significantly affect plasma concentrations of total, LDL, HDL cholesterol, triglyceride, apo A1, B and blood components. The result of present study demonstrated the supplementation of 30 mg isoflavone and 110 mg gamma-linolenic acid per day for 12 weeks may protect LDL cholesterol from oxidative stress.
Estrogen like activities were evaluated using ethanol and hot water extracts of gongjindan (GJD) and 3 types of brown algae by an in vitro detection system. Laminaria japonica and Undaria pinnatifida represented statistically significant (p<0.001) estrogen like activities, while GJD and Ecklonia stolonifera did not. Furthermore, activities of hot water extracts ($500{\mu}g/ml$) of Laminaria japonica and three mixture (Ecklonia stolonifera : Undaria pinnatifida : Laminaria japonica, 1: 1: 1) were stronger than that of $10^{-7}M$$17{\beta}$-estradiol. These results suggest that Laminaria japonica contain estrogen like compounds. Based on these results, the prepared seaweed GJD were used for animal experiments about the effects on inhibition of platelet aggregation and serum lipid levels in ovariectomized rats. 9-week Old female SD-rats were randomly assigned to 3 groups as sham-operated rats, ovariectomized rats and ovariectomized rats that were treated with GJD. The rats were placed on prescribed diets for 5 weeks following ovariectomy. Total cholesterol and triglyceride contents on serum decreased in the SHAM group compared to the OVX-CON group. 5 weeks feeding of GJD resulted in significant lowering of triglyceride and a decreasing tendency of total cholesterol level. The level of HDL-cholesterol on serum increased significantly by feeding diets containing the GJD. The ability of platelet aggregation of group treated with GJD was less than that of the OVX-CON group. These results suggest that the beneficial effects of seaweed gongjindan may be used to improve menopausal syndrome.

During menopause, elderly woman experience physical and emotional symptoms, including hot flashes, night sweats, weight gain, vaginal dryness, and mood swings. In this study, we investigated the effects of mixed herbal extracts containing Angelica gigas Nakai and Cuscuta chinensis Lam. on menopause symptoms in ovariectomized (OVX) rats. Daily oral treatments of 500 mg/kg and 1,000 mg/kg in OVX rats for 8 weeks significantly reduced weight gain, inhibited hepatic lipid accumulation, and lowered serum lipid levels comparable to the effects induced by estradiol treatments. Mixed herbal extracts (named Jaeummidan) also prevented vaginal dryness as measured by increased vaginal weight. Increased vaginal weight was associated with enlarged epithelium thickness. These data show the preventive actions of Jaeummidan against menopause symptoms and further suggest the possibility of developing functional ingredients in elderly human populations experiencing menopause symptoms.

Very little is known about the relation between isoflavone intake and menopausal symptoms in Korean woman To find the effects and correlations between these factors, questionnaires(maternal factors, menopausal symptoms) anthropometric measurement, 24hr dietary recalls, and urinary isoflavones analysis were conducted in 100 postmenopausal women residing in the Kyunggi-do rural area. The average age hight and weight of the subject were 61.5 years, 153.6 cm and 56.2kg. The average age at menarche, menopause, and menstrual cycle were 16.7 years, 47.2 years, 29.8 years, respectively. Most of the postmenopausal women experienced mildly menopausal symptoms. The mean calorie, protein and calcium intake were 1417.6 kcal(74.7% of the Korean RDA) 53.2 g(88.6% of the Korean RDA) and 454.0mg(65.6% of the Korean RDA) respectively. The ration of energy from carbohydrate, protein, and fat was 68: 15: 17 The average isoflavone intake from soy foods was 27.27 mg. The major food source of the isoflavone were soybeans and soybean curd. The average urinary isoflavone excretion was 2. 78nmol/mg Cr and showed significant positive correlation with isoflavone intake. Isoflavone intake from soy foods had a negative correlation with the severity of menopausal symptoms. Therefore, soy foods which contain isoflavone may have a protective effect on menopausal symptoms of women in Korea.
