Recent advancement in traffic surveillance systems has allowed the researchers to obtain more detailed vehicular movement such as individual vehicle trajectory data. Understanding the characteristics of interactions between leading and following vehicles in the traffic flow stream is a backbone for designing and evaluating more sophisticated traffic and vehicle control strategies. This study proposes a methodology for estimating rear-end crash potential, as a probabilistic measure, in real-time based on the analysis of vehicular movements. The methodology presented in this study consists of three components. The first predicts vehicle position and speed every second using a Kalman filtering technique. The second estimates the probability for the vehicle's trajectory to belong to either 'changing lane' or 'going straight'. A binary logistic regression (BLR) is used to model the lane-changing decision of the subject vehicle. The other component calculates crash probability by employing an exponential decay function that uses time-to-collision (TTC) between the subject vehicle and the front vehicle. The result of this study is expected to be adapted in developing traffic control and information systems, in particular, for crash prevention.
One of the crucial elements to fully facilitate the various benefits of intelligent transportation systems (ITS) is to obtain more reliable traffic monitoring in real time. To date, point and section-based traffic measurements have been available through existing surveillance technologies, such as loops and automatic vehicle identification (AVI) systems. However, seamless and more reliable traffic data are required for more effective traffic information provision and operations. Technology advancements including vehicle tracking and wireless communication enable the acceleration of the availability of individual vehicle travel information. This study presents a UBIquitous PRObe vehicle Surveillance System (UBIPROSS) using vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) wireless communications. Seamless vehicle travel information, including origin-destination information, speed, travel times, and other data, can be obtained by the proposed UBIPROSS. A set of parameters associated with functional requirements of the UBIPROSS, which include the market penetration rate (MPR) of equipped vehicles, V2V communication range, and travel time update interval, are investigated by a Monte Carlo simulation- (MCS) based evaluation framework. In addition, this paper describes prototypical implementation. Field test results and identified technical issues are also discussed. It is expected that the proposed system would be an invaluable precursor to develop a next-generation traffic surveillance system.
This study proposed a speed management strategy for the enhancement of traffic safety on freeways. A novel feature of the proposed strategy is to provide desirable speed information to individual vehicles. A microscopic traffic simulator, VISSIM, was used for the performance evaluation. Vehicle trajectory data were used to evaluate the various speed management scenarios including the different levels of proportions of heavy vehicles. The proposed speed management strategy would be a useful precursor for developing an effective traffic control and operations system to prevent traffic accidents on freeways.
An innovative feature of this study is to propose a methodology for evaluating safety performance in real time based on vehicle trajectory data extracted from video images. The essence of evaluating safety performance is to capture unsafe car-following events between individual vehicles traveling surveillance area. The proposed methodology applied two indices including real-time safety index (RSI) based on the concept of safe stopping distance and time-to-collision (TTC) to the evaluation of safety performance. It is believed that outcomes would be greatly utilized in developing a new generation of video images processing (VIP) based traffic detection systems capable of producing safety performance measurements. Relevant technical challenges for such detection systems are also discussed.

An innovative feature of this study is to propose a methodology for evaluating safety performance in real time based on vehicle trajectory data extracted from video images. The essence of evaluating safety performance is to capture unsafe car-following and lane-changing events generated by individual vehicles traveling within video surveillance area. The proposed methodology derived three indices including real-time safety index(RSI) based on the concept of safe stopping distance, time-to-collision(TTC), and the collision energy based on the conservation of momentum. It is believed that outcomes would be greatly utilized in developing a new generation of video images processing(VIP) based traffic detection systems capable of producing safety performance measurements. Traffic management centers (TMC) collect real-time traffic data from the field and have powerful databases for analysing, recording, and archiving the data. Recent advanced sensor and communication technologies have been widely applied to intelligent transportation systems (ITS). Regarding sensors, various in-vehicle sensors, in addition to global positioning system (GPS) receiver, are capable of providing high resolution data representing vehicle maneuverings. Regarding communication technologies, advanced wireless communication technologies including vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-vehicle infrastructure (V2I), which are generally referred to as V2X, have been widely used for traffic information and operations (references). The V2X environment considers the transportation system as a network in which each element, such as the vehicles, infrastructure, and drivers, communicates and reacts systematically to acquire information without any time and/or place restrictions. This study is motivated by needs of exploiting aforementioned cutting-edge technologies for developing smarter transportation services. The proposed system has been implemented in the field and discussed in this study. The proposed system is expected to be used effectively to support the development of various traffic information control strategies for the purpose of enhancing traffic safety on highways.

A variety of research efforts, using advanced wireless communication technologies, have been made to develop more reliable traffic information system. This study presents a novel decentralized traffic information system based on vehicle infrastructure integration (VII). A major objective of this study was also to devise a methodology for determining appropriate spacing of roadside equipment (RSE) to fully exploit the benefits of the proposed VII-based traffic information system. Evaluation of travel time estimation accuracy was conducted with various RSE spacings and the market penetration rates of equipped vehicle. A microscopic traffic simulator, VISSIM, was used to obtain individual vehicle travel information for the evaluation. In addition, the ANOVA tests were conducted to draw statistically significant results of simulation analyses in determining the RSE spacing. It is expected that the proposed methodology will be a valuable precursor to implementing capability-enhanced next generation traffic information systems under the forthcoming ubiquitous transportation environment.

The objective of this study is to estimate and analyze the traffic density of continuous flow using the trajectory of individual vehicles and the headway of sample probe vehicles-front vehicles obtained from ADAS (Advanced Driver Assitance System) installed in sample probe vehicles. In the past, traffic density of continuous traffic flow was mainly estimated by processing data such as traffic volume, speed, and share collected from Vehicle Detection System, or by counting the number of vehicles directly using video information such as CCTV. This method showed the limitation of spatial limitations in estimating traffic density, and low reliability of estimation in the event of traffic congestion. To overcome the limitations of prior research, In this study, individual vehicle trajectory data and vehicle headway information collected from ADAS are used to detect the space on the road and to estimate the spatiotemporal traffic density using the Generalized Density formula. As a result, an analysis of the accuracy of the traffic density estimates according to the sampling rate of ADAS vehicles showed that the expected sampling rate of 30% was approximately 90% consistent with the actual traffic density. This study contribute to efficient traffic operation management by estimating reliable traffic density in road situations where ADAS and autonomous vehicles are mixed.

Vehicles experience changes in driving behavior due to the various facilities on the freeway. These sections may cause repetitive traffic congestion when the traffic volume increases, so safety issues may be raised. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to perform microscopic traffic analysis on these sections using drone images and to identify the causes of traffic problems. In the case of drone image, since trajectory data of individual vehicles can be obtained, empirical analysis of driving behavior is possible. The analysis section of this study was selected as the weaving section of Pangyo IC and the sag section of Seohae Bridge. First, the trajectory data was extracted through the drone image. And the microscopic traffic analysis performed on the speed, density, acceleration, and lane change through cell-unit analysis using Generalized definition method. This analysis results can be used as a basic study to identify the cause of the problem section in the freeway. Through this, we aim to improve the efficiency and convenience of traffic analysis.
This study proposed an advanced warning information system based on real-time traffic conflict analysis. An algorithm to detect and analyze unsafe traffic events associated with car-following and lane-changes using individual vehicle trajectories was developed. A positive guidance procedure was adopted to provide warning information to alert drivers to hazardous traffic conditions derived from the outcomes of the algorithm. In addition, autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) analyses were conducted to investigate the predictability of warning information for the enhancement of information reliability.
