  • While characteristics of topography, soil, and vegetation coverage were surveyed, also surface runoff and soil erosion for each rainfall event were measured to analyze effect of change of land cover conditions in mountain areas, Yangyang, directly after wildfire. Fifteen rainfall events were taken in total during the survey period. The result of this survey appeared that the amount of surface runoff and soil erosion are a great difference between plots with rapidly recovered vegetation and bare plots after wildfire. The burned plots where vegetation recovered rapidly generated two times or more of surface runoff and soil erosion than control plots, as burned plots with bare soil showed about ten times of surface runoff and sediment than control plots. The result of correlation analysis between main parameters of the surface runoff and soil erosion presented that rainfall factors and vegetation factors had significant effects on runoff and soil erosion. The sensitivity of runoff and soil erosion showed specially high correlation with vegetation indices. If the land surface disturbed by wildfire are recovered by natural vegetation as time passes, runoff and soil erosion may be decreased gradually. Because runoff and soil erosion in the areas with rare vegetation or bare soil are generated continuously, the discriminated mediation strategies would be established as condition of each region.

  • The kinetic energy of the rain drops was predicted in a relation between the rain rate and rain quantity, derived directly from the rain drop size distribution (DSD), which had been measured by a disdrometer located in the eastern state of Alagoas-Brazil. The equation in the form of exponential form suppressed the effects of large drops at low rainfall intensity observed at the beginning and end of the rainfall. The kinetic energy of the raindrop was underestimated in almost rain intensity ranges and was considered acceptable by the performance indicators such as coefficient of determination, average absolute error, percent relative error, mean absolute error, root mean square error, Willmott's concordance index and confidence index.

  • To evaluate the kinetic energy of the raindrops, the drop size distribution and the terminal velocity of the raindrops had been measured from January to September 2010 using the laser-optical disdrometer in KIGAM, Daejeon, Korea. The relationship between kinetic energy (KE) and rainfall intensity (I) was computed as logarithmic and exponential model, respectively, under the rainfall intensity of about 142mm/h. The exponential model is more suitable for the relationship of KE-I than the logarithmic model, because the exponential model presented better fit for KE over 50mm/h of rainfall intensity. Meanwhile, the differences of the total kinetic energy existed in rainfall events with almost same total rainfall depth, and KE values of Daejeon at high rainfall intensity underestimated rather than the others under temperate climate. Therefore, these differences of KE in rainfall events and geographical regions imply the result from the variations of rainfall intensity within a rainfall event.

  • This paper presents the experimental results of runoff and soil losses from sloping runoff plots under three cropping practices. Twenty-nine runoff plots having slopes of 10, 20, and 30 percent in gradient, and lengths of 10, 20 and 30 meter, respectively, were cultivated with soybean, alfalfa, and fallow conditions during 1989~1990 seasons. Crop stages were grouped based on crop canopy conditions and the cropping management factors of the Univer- sal Soil Loss Equation were derived as ratios of the soil losses to fallow conditions. The results from this study are summarized as follows : 1. Annual rainfall erosivity factor at Ichun station varied from 127 to 1336, averaging 472 and 200 in 1989. The month variations reach the peak in July, being 19& 2. Canopy cover percent for soybean that was taken by a photographic method increased sharply during 30 to 80 days after seeding and the results were used to identify periods for the six crop stages. 3. Annual average runoff rates from soybean and alfalfa plots were 35 and 16 percent of those from fallow ones, respectively. The runoff rates decreased as the crops grew. 4. Soil losses from soybean and alfalfa plots were 14 and 16 percent of those from fallow plots. And the crop coefficients were proposed for different crop stages.

  • In this study, the characteristics of estimating methodology for RUSLE factors such as soil erodibility factor, slope length-steepness factor, and cover management factor were reviewed and then the relative error according to each methodology was analyzed. RUSLE was applied to experimental watershed for 42 storm events and their results were compared with measured sediment yield to examine the applicability of RUSLE. As a result, this paper found that it should be necessary to consider vegetation effect for forest application of RUSLE as cover management was the most sensitive factor. Also, soil erodbility factor was calculated from data of soil series by National Academy of Agricultural Science caused sediment yield to be overestimated because there were big differences between the soil series and on-site soil texture. The 22.7% of maximum relative error was shown according to selecting the rain energy equation. In addition, it will be necessary to verify the RUSLE factors with more data in order to improve their accuracy.

  • Soil erosion in North Korea has been continued to accelerate by deterioration of topographical conditions. However, few studies have been conducted to predict the amount of soil loss in North Korea due to limited data so far. Rainfall erosivity is an important factor to predict the amount of long-term annual soil loss by USLE (universal soil loss equation). The purpose of this study is to investigate rainfall erosivity, which presented the potential risk of soil erosion by water, in North Korea. Annual rainfall erosivities for 27 stations in North Korea for 1983~2010 were calculated using regression models based on modified Institute of Agricultural Sciences (IAS) index in this study. The result showed that annual average rainfall erosivity in North Korea ranged from 2,249 to 7,526 and averaged value was $4,947MJmm\;ha^{-1}\;hr^{-1}\;yr^{-1}$, which corresponded to about 70% of annual average rainfall erosivity in South Korea. The finding was that the potential risk of soil erosion in North Korea has been accelerated by the increase of rainfall erosivity since the late 1990s.

  • Recently, as the occurrence frequency of sudden floods due to climate variability increased, the damage of aging chuteway slabs of spillway are on the rise. Accordingly, a wide array of field survey, hydraulic experiment and numerical simulation have been conducted to find the cause of damage on chuteway slabs. However, these studies generally reviewed the flow characteristics and distribution of pressure on chuteway slabs. Therefore the derivation of damage on chuteway slabs was relatively insufficient in the literature. In this study, the cavitation erosion and hydraulic jacking were assumed to be the causes of damage on chuteway slabs, and the phenomena were reproduced using 3D numerical models, FLOW-3D and COMSOL Multiphysics. In addition, the cavitation index was calculated and the von Mises stress by uplift pressure distribution was compared with tensile and bending strength of concrete to evaluate the possibility of cavitation erosion and hydraulic jacking. As a result of numerical simulation on cavitation erosion and hydraulic jacking under various flow conditions with complete opening gate, the cavitation index in the downstream of spillway was less than 0.3, and the von Mises stress on concrete was 4.6 to 5.0 MPa. When von Mises stress was compared with tensile and bending strength of concrete, the fatigue failure caused by continuous pressure fluctuation occurred on chuteway slabs. Therefore, the cavitation erosion and hydraulic jacking caused by high speed flow were one of the main causes of damage to the chuteway slabs in spillway. However, this study has limitations in that the various shape conditions of damage(cavity and crack) and flow conditions were not considered and Fluid-Structure Interaction (FSI) was not simulated. If these limitations are supplemented and reviewed, it is expected to derive more efficient utilization of the maintenance plan on spillway in the future.

  • To gain the basic informations on soil management practices by determination of the differences of soil genetic characteristics and the contents of soil moisture due to slope aspects of hilly land, this study was conducted at 1992 on sweet persimmon orchard soils derived from porphyry in southern of Korea. The results obtained were summarized as follows. The soils studied were belong to fine loamy family. The degree of soil development was greater in the north than other slope aspects and the solum thickness also the same. The soil chemical properties such as pH and exchangeable cations except for potassium were low generally in the orchards studied but the content of organic matter was lack in the summit and south aspect. The contents of Fe oxide and extractable Al were higher in the subsurface than surface. Fe, Al and clay indexes which indicate relative intensity of B horizon development were higher in the side slope than summit and the highest in the north slope. The rate of solum to B horizon was higher as about 1.5 for summit and west aspect which had thiner B horizon thickness compared to other aspect. North and west aspect had certainly more amount of soil water at drought season than other slope aspects and was lower the difference of soil water between the drought and wet seasons. Therfore, the soil management such as erosion control and irrigation at drought season should be practices differently due to slope aspect and soil chararteristics in the sloped land.
