  • The previous elastic stiffness formulas of leaf type holddown spring assemblies(HDSs) have been corrected and extended to be able to consider the point of taper runout for the TT-HDS and all the strain energies for both the TT-HDS and the TW-HDS based on Euler beam theory and Castigliano'stheorem. The elastic stiffness sensitivity of the leaf type holddown spring assemblies was analyzed using the derived elastic stiffness formulas and their gradient vectors obtained from the mid-point formula. As a result of the sensitivity analysis, the elastic stiffness sensitivity at each design variable is quantified and design variables having remarkable sensitivity are identified. Among the design variables, leaf thickness is identified as that of having the most remarkable sensitivity of the elastic stiffness. In addition, it was found that the sensitivity of the leaf type HDS's elastic stiffness is exponentially correlated to the leaf thickness.

  • In this study, fiber elements and a spring are used to build a reinforced concrete shear wall model. The fiber elements and the spring reflect flexural and shear behaviors of the shear wall, respectively. The fiber elements are built by inputting section data and material properties. The spring parameters representing strength and stiffness degradation, pinching, and slip were determined by comparing behaviors of fiber element and VecTor2 results. 'Pinching4' model in OpenSees is used for shear spring. The parameter selecting process for shear spring is a complicated and time consuming process. To study the applicability of the fiber element, reinforced concrete buildings containing a shear wall are evaluated using nonlinear dynamic analysis with various wall aspect ratio (H/L), various beam heights, and stiffness and flexural strength of beam and wall ratios. The aspect ratio of the wall showed distinct difference in IDR (interstory drift ratio) of the models with and without spring. On the other hand, the height of beam and ratio of stiffness and flexural strength of beam and wall did not show clear relation.

  • Recently, several studies have been conducted on virtual fixed-point and elastic soil spring methods to simulate the soil-pile interaction in response to spectrum analysis of pile-supported structures. However, the soil spring stiffness has not been properly considered due to the seismic load magnitude, and studies on the response spectrum analysis of pile-supported structures considering this circumstance are inadequate. Therefore, in this study, the response spectrum analysis was performed considering the soil spring stiffness according to the seismic load magnitude, and the dynamic behavior of the pile-supported structure was evaluated by comparing it with existing virtual fixed-point and elastic soil spring methods. Comparing the experiment and analysis, the moment differences occurred up to 117% and 21% in the virtual fixed-point and elastic soil spring models, respectively. Moreover, when the analysis was performed using an API p-y curve considering the soil spring stiffness according to the seismic load magnitude, the moment difference between the experiment and analysis was derived at a maximum of < 4%, and it is the most accurate method to simulate the experimental model response.

  • The segment lining design for shield tunnel is generally carried out by using the beam-spring model and the induced member forces from the model are strongly influenced by the components of the model such as imposed load, coefficient of subgrade reaction, location of segment joint and its stiffness. The structural models and stiffness of its connection part found used in abroad design cases is usually obtained as it is for the domestic design of segment of shield tunnel. Those models and stiffness in existing design cases are conventionally applied to a new tunnel design without any suitability review for the project. In this study, the application method of base components of the model such as the coefficient of subgrade reaction and modelling method to the segment lining design was suggested by carrying out the comparative study of the base elements for the member forces estimation of segment lining of shield tunnel.

  • Friction springs have different characteristics while loading and un-loading. Because of these characteristics, they are utilized in impact systems. In this paper, the design of a recoil system with friction springs for use in a machine gun system has been presented. In order to determine the stiffness of a friction spring, equations of motion for a simple gun model with a recoil system have been derived. The impulse balance scheme has been adopted. On the basis of simulation results, the diameter of the friction spring has been determined.

  • The excellent load transfer at transverse joints ensures the high performance of jointed plane concrete pavements(JPCP). Load transfer efficiency(LTE) is affected by dowel-bars, aggregate interlock and types of underlying layers, and these factors have to be modelled adequately for a reasonable analysis of JPCP. Generally, the joint stiffness has been represented by a spring model for the shear transfer by aggregate interlock or dowels. However dowel-bars, aggregate interlock and types of underlying layers have not been considered together in the design of joints. In this study, the joint stiffness that considered those factors was presented by comparing LTE obtained using FWD(Falling Weight Deflectometer) with theoretical results obtained using the finite element analysis. In addition, the effects of temperature and concrete age, on the joint stiffness were investigated.

  • The primary suspension system of a railway vehicle restrains the wheelset and the bogie, which greatly affects the dynamic characteristics of the vehicle depending on the stiffness in each direction. In order to improve the dynamic characteristics, different stiffness in each direction is required. However, designing different stiffness in each direction is difficult in the case of a general suspension device. To address this, in this paper, an optimization technique is applied to design different stiffness in each direction by using a conical rubber spring. The optimization is performed by using target and analysis RMS values. Lastly, the final model is proposed by complementing the shape of the weak part of the model. An actual model is developed and the reliability of the optimization model is proved on the basis of a deviation average of about 7.7% compared to the target stiffness through a static load test. In addition, the stiffness value is applied to a multibody dynamics model to analyze the stability and curve performance. The critical speed of the improved model was 190km/h, which was faster than the maximum speed of 110km/h. In addition, the steering performance is improved by 34% compared with the conventional model.
