  • This study aims to understand the patterns of spatial distribution of snowfall by Siberian High in the Honam region in Korea. In the Honam region, Siberian High induces snowfall dominantly. There is a huge amount of snowfall in the westward of the Noryung mountain ranges to the Wert coast in the Honam region affected by northwesterly wind directly from the Siberian High. The westward of the Noryung mountain ranges such as a heavy snowfall region has a various pattern of distribution of snowfall due to topography. The coast region has a large amount of snowfall by sea effect. And, snowfall amount is decreased from the coast to the inland plain. However, in front of mountain, snowfall is increase by reason of a forced ascending air to the mountain. In general the region where frequently appear a cumuliform cloud has a large amount of snowfall. A cumuliform cloud is frequent in the mountainous region in inland, the coast, and the inland plain in order Snowfall is intense in the coast and the mountainous region, and weak in the inland plain. In the mountainous region, a cumuliform cloud induced tv a forced ascending air by reason of topography generates snowfall mostly. This fact is the main difference with snowfall in the mountainous region and the coast region. In the result, in the Honam region, snowfall distribution and snowfall pattern are various, according to geographical climate factor such as sea and topography. The heavy snowfall region in the Honam region is divided into the coast region affected by sea effect and the mountainous region affected by topography effect.

  • Recently, economic and social damages are globally increased due to the heavy snowfall caused by global warming. To reduce the damages of sudden regional heavy snow in roads, suitable countermeasures should be established based on the accurate detection of snowfall intensity for each roadway segment. In this paper, we deal with snowfall intensity detecting algorithm in the road area from CCD Imagery. First, we determine the MLZ (MotionLess Zone), which does not contain lane markings and moving cars, in the image space. Next, snow streaks trespassing the MLZ are extracted with Canny operator and proposed algorithm. Also, the concept of SII (Snow Intensity Index), which is the number of snow streaks during one minute in the MLZ, is defined. Finally, the effectiveness of proposed algorithm is proved by visually comparing the imagery and SII value obtained during 69 minutes. In consequence, we figured out that the integration of SII is significantly related to an actual amount of snowfall.

  • This study identified the effects of global temperature rise on snowfall change over Korea selecting Seoul, Gangneung, Gunsan, and Daegu as study areas. The trend of snowfall change has generally decreased since 1950s over Korea, but has only increased in Gunsan since 1990s. The variation of snowfall days are similar to those of snowfall. The relationship between snowfall over Korea and the anomaly of global mean temperature in spring has a negative correlation. The change of Siberian High intensity also has a good relationship with snowfall in both Gunsan and Gangneung; the former is positively correlated while the latter is negatively correlated. This result might suggest that if the intensity of Siberian High would weakens due the ongoing global warming in the future, there would be a possibility that the amount snowfall could decrease in Gunsan but it could increase in Gangneung.

  • This study intends to clarify the characteristics and causes of current changes in wintertime precipitation in Korea and to predict the future directions based on surface observational $(1973/04\sim2006/07)$ and modeled (GFDL 2.1) climate data. Analyses of surface observation data demonstrate that without changes in the total amount of precipitation, snowfall in winter (November-April) has reduced by 4.3cm/decade over the $1973\sim2007$ period. Moreover, the frequency and intensity of snowfall have decreased; the duration of snow season has shortened; and the snow-to-rain day ratio (STDR) has decreased. These patterns indicate that the type of wintertime precipitation has changed from snow to rain in recent decades. The snow-to-rain change in winter is associated with the increases of air temperature (AT) over South Korea. Analyses of synoptic charts reveal that the warming pattern is associated with the formation of a positive pressure anomaly core over northeast Asia by a hemispheric positive winter Arctic Oscillation (AO) mode. Moreover, the differentiated warming of AT versus sea surface temperature (SST) under the high pressure anomaly core reduces the air-sea temperature gradient, and subsequently it increases the atmospheric stability above oceans, which is associated with less formation of snow cloud. Comparisons of modeled data between torrent $(1981\sim2000)$ and future $(2081\sim2100)$ periods suggest that the intensified warming with larger anthropogenic greenhouse gas emission in the $21^{st}$ century will amplify the magnitude of these changes. More reduction of snow impossible days as well as more abbreviation of snow seasons is predicted in the $21^{st}$ century.

  • Heavy snowfall events frequently occur in the Gangwon province, and the snowfall amount significantly varies in space due to the complex terrain and topographical modulation of precipitation. Understanding the spatial characteristics of heavy snowfall and its prediction is particularly challenging during snowfall events in the easterly winds. The easterly wind produces a significantly different atmospheric condition. Hence, it brings different precipitation characteristics. In this study, we have investigated the microphysical characteristics of snowfall in the windward and leeward sides of the Taebaek mountain range in the easterly condition. The two snowfall events are selected in the easterly, and the snow particles size distributions (SSD) are observed in the four sites (two windward and two leeward sites) by the PARSIVEL distrometers. We compared the characteristic parameters of SSDs that come from leeward sites to that of windward sites. The results show that SSDs of windward sites have a relatively wide distribution with many small snow particles compared to those of leeward sites. This characteristic is clearly shown by the larger characteristic number concentration and characteristic diameter in the windward sites. Snowfall rate and ice water content of windward also are larger than those of leeward sites. The results indicate that a new generation of snowfall particles is dominant in the windward sites which is likely due to the orographic lifting. In addition, the windward sites show heavy aggregation particles by nearby zero ground temperature that is likely driven by the wet and warm condition near the ocean.

  • This paper analyzes wave measurement using X-band navigation (ship) radar, changes in radar signal due to snowfall and precipitation, and factors that obstruct wave measurement. Data obtained from the radar installed at Sokcho Beach were used, and data from the Korea Meteorological Administration and the Korea Hydrographic and Oceanographic Agency were used for the meteorological data needed for comparative verification. Data from the Korea Meteorological Administration are measured at Sokcho Meteorological Observatory, which is about 7km away from the radar, and data from the Korea Hydrographic and Oceanographic Agency are measured at a buoy about 3km away from the radar. To this point, changes in radar signals due to rainfall or snowfall have been transmitted empirically, and there is no case of an analysis comparing the results to actual weather data. Therefore, in this paper, precipitation, snowfall data, CCTV, and radar signals from the Korea Meteorological Administration were comprehensively analyzed in time series. As a result, it was confirmed that the wave height measured by the radar according to snowfall and rainfall was reduced compared to the actual wave height, and a decrease in the radar signal strength according to the distance was also confirmed. This paper is meaningful in that it comprehensively analyzes the decrease in the signal strength of radar according to snowfall and rainfall.

  • In general, attenuation at frequencies over 20GHz is mainly due to absorption by satmospheric gases, rain, and snow. Among this factors rain become an important limiting factor. Rain attenuation is highly influenced by rainfall-intensity and it varies over time and space. Thus it is requeired to obtain spatial and temporal data of rainfall-intensity for precise prediction of rainfall attenuation. In this paper, rainfall intensity of thiry-two measurement sites in South Korea excluding JeiJdo Islands over recent ten years is obtained and the regional relation between rainfall-intensity and percent of time is analyzed. Also we present the new method about rainfall-intensity cumulative distribution.

  • Image de-snowing aims at eliminating the negative influence by snow particles and improving scene understanding in images. In this paper, a perceptual generative adversarial network based a single image snow removal method is proposed. The residual U-Net is designed as a generator to generate the snow free image. In order to handle various sizes of snow particles, the inception module with different filter kernels is adopted to extract multiple resolution features of the input snow image. Except the adversarial loss, the perceptual loss and total variation loss are employed to improve the quality of the resulted image. Experimental results indicate that our method can obtain excellent performance both on synthetic and realistic snow images in terms of visual observation and commonly used visual quality indices.
