A Program for Distortional Analysis of Steel Box Girder Bridges (강상자형교의 뒤틀림 해석을 위한 프로그램 개발)

  • The objective of this paper is to develop a program for distortional analysis of steel box girder bridges. This program is formulated by using MSDM(modified slope deflection method). Two examples are carried out to verify the validity of the developed technique and its computation procedures. The analyzed results are compared with the previously proposed methods, BEF(beam on elastic foundation) and EBEF(equivalent beam on elastic foundation). The BEF method is limited only to prismatic straight box girders. In the EBEF method, stiffness of the intermediate diaphragms is infinitely considered. On the other hand, stiffness of the intermediate diaphragms is idealized as spring contant in this study. And then, nonprismatic straight box girders can be analyzed using the same procedure. Therefore, the comparison shows that the MSDM algorithm proposed in this paper is more efficient and reliable. Also parametric studies are perfomed using the proposed algorithm.

  • In this study steel box girders used as main members of a two span continuous steel bridge, are optimally designed by a Load and Resistance Factor Design method(LRFD) using an numerical optimization method. The width, height, web thickness and flange thickness of the main girder are set as design variables, and light weight design is attempted by choosing the cross-sectional area as an object function. We studied the results of steel box girders and compared with those of 1-type girders. The main program is coded with C++ and connected with optimization modul ADS. which is coded with FORTRAN.

Dynamic Load Allowance of Highway Bridges by Numerical Dynamic Analysis for LRFD Calibration (LRFD 보정을 위한 동적해석에 의한 도로교의 동적하중허용계수)

  • A reliability based calibration of dynamic load allowance (DLA) of highway bridge is performed by numerical dynamic analysis of various types of bridges taking into account of the road surface roughness and bridge-vehicle interaction. A total of 10 simply supported bridges with three girder types in the form of prestressed concrete girder, steel plate girder, and steel box girder is analyzed. The cross sections recommended in "The Standardized Design of Highway Bridge Superstructure" by the Korean Ministry of Construction are used for the prestressed concrete girder bridges and steel plate girder bridges while the box girder bridges are designed by the LRFD method. Ten sets of road surface roughness for each bridge are generated from power spectral density (PSD) function by assuming the roadway as "Average Road". A three dimensionally modeled 5-axle tractor-trailer with its gross weight the same as that of DB-24 design truck is used in the dynamic analysis. For the finite element modeling of superstructure, beam elements for the main girder, shell elements for concrete deck, and rigid links between main girder and concrete deck are used. The statistical mean and coefficient of variation of DLA are obtained from a total of 100 DLA results for 10 different bridges with each having 10 sets of road surface roughness. Applying the DLA statistics obtained, the DLA is finally calibrated in a reliability based LRFD format by using the formula developed in the calibration of OHBDC code.

Load Carrying Capacity Assessment of Bridges with Elastic Supports Application (탄성지점의 적용에 따른 교량의 내하력평가)

  • This study applied elastic supports in order to evaluate load carrying capacity using measurement data obtained from load tests actively and utilizing various evaluation methods. In order to confirm the adequacy of structural analysis based on elastic supports and to improve the reliability of experiment results, we conducted a deflection test with flexural beams prepared as overhanging beams and, based on the results, performed precision safety diagnosis for real bridges under public service for improving the load carrying capacity evaluation method for bridges under public service. In the results of the bending test, compared to deflection calculated by the existing method, deflection obtained by applying elastic supports was closer to the actually measured deflection. In the results of evaluating load carrying capacity for a 3 span continuous steel box girder bridge just after its completion, load carrying capacity by elastic supports was smaller by up to 39% than that by the existing method. When the load carrying capacity of bridges is evaluated by the existing method the results vary among engineers due to lack of guidelines for evaluation such as the application of stress modification factor. This study was conducted as an effort to solve this problem through active research.
