  • Abutment-to-pile connection in an integral abutment bridge is vulnerable to lateral displacement induced by thermal movement of the superstructure. However, previous researches have merely focused on the connection. In order to improve the performance of the connection, new abutment-to-pile connection designs were proposed based on quasi-static nonlinear finite element model. The reinforcement detail specified in PennDOT DM4 and HSS tube were barely effective in controlling crack growing but spiral rebar effectively performed to delay crack growth as well as absorbing energy capacity. However, it was found that delaying cracking and strengthening the connection also caused the high lateral load in superstructures. Consequently, shape of HP pile were modified to introduce plastic hinge of the HP pile for reducing the lateral load in superstructures. Connections with modified HP pile significantly prevented crack propagations under the lateral displacement.

  • During construction of deep foundation in soft rock under varying soil properties, it is essential to locate the rock stratum, especially when drilling with slurry. When slurry is used for drilling, the bottom of the borehole cannot be seen, thereafter soil cuttings cannot be differentiated from soft rock cuttings. A new static rock penetrometer, known as Rock Penetrometer was developed during this study. It could be a simple mechanical device that is attached to the bottom of a Kelly bar which is used to attach drilling tools such as augers and core barrels while drilling. After its calibration in the laboratory, the performance of the static rock penetrometer was verified in the several field test sites.

  • In this study, Hollow Concrete Filled FRP Tube Pile(HCFFT Pile) was proposed as a model to utilize the advantages of composite piles and solve the problem of corrosion, which is a disadvantage of CFT piles, and a numerical analysis model was developed to analyze their behavior. The strain compatibility method was applied considering the damage plastic behavior of concrete, the yield plastic behavior of steel, and the elastic behavior of FRP. The flexural strength calculation equation of HCFFT piles was proposed considering the change of the FRP tube section according to the distance from the neutral axis. The flexural strength calculation equation, numerical analysis results, and experimental results were compared and analyzed to verify their adequacy. The results of this study can be used as basic data for the optimal design of various HCFFT piles using FRP.

  • Conventionally, because evaluation methods of the bearing capacity for double steel pipe-concrete composite pile design have not been established, the conventional vertical bearing capacity equations for steel hollow pile are used. However, there are severe differences between the predictions from these equations, and the most conservative one among vertical bearing capacity predictions are conventionally adopted as a design value. Consequently, the current prediction method for vertical bearing capacity of composite pile prediction composite pile causes design reliability and economical feasibility to be low. This paper investigated mechanical behaviors of a new composite pile, with a cross-section composed of double steel pipes filled with concrete (DSCT), vertical bearing capacities were analyzed for several DSCT pile conditions. Axisymmetric finite element models for DSCT pile and surrounding ground were created and they were used to analyze effects on behaviors of DSCT pile pile by embedding depth, stiffness of plugging material at pile tip, height of plugging material at pile tip, and rockbed material. Additionally, results from conventional design prediction equations for vertical bearing capacity at steel hollow pile tip were compared with that from numerical results, and the use of the conventional equations for steel hollow pile was examined to apply to that for DSCT pile.

  • A series of model tests were performed both to investigate the load transfer by soil acrching in fills above embankment pils and to verify of the theoretical analysis. In the model tests, the piles were installed in a row below the embankment and the cap beams were placed on the pile heads perpendicular to the longitudinal axias of the embankment. The space between pile cap beams and the embankment height was focused as the major factors affecting the load transfer in embankment fill. When the embankment fill was higher than the minimum required height, which was about 33% higher than the radius of the soil arch proposed by theoretical discussion in the previous study, not only the soil arching could be developed completely but also the experimental results showed good agreement with theoretical predictions. The portion of the embankment load carried by model pile cap beams decreased with increment of the space between pile cap beams, while it increased with increment of the embankment height. Therefore, to maximize the effect of embankment load transfer by piles on design, the interval ratio of pile cap beams should be decreased under considerably high embankments by reducing the space between cap beams and/or enlarging the width of pile cap beams.

  • This paper shows the results of a series of model bests on the behavior of single steel pipe pile which is subjected to lateral load in Nak-dong river sand. The purpose of the present paper is to estimate the effect of Non -homogeneous soil, constraint condition of pile head, lateral load velocity, relative density of soil, embedded pile length, and flexural stiffness of pile on the behavior of single pile which is embedded in Nak-dong river strand. These effects can be quantined only by the results of model tests. The nonlinear responses of lateral loadieflection relationships are fitted to 2nd polynomial equations by model tests results. Also, the lateral load of a deflection, yield and ultimate lateral load max. bending moment, and yield bending moment can be expressed as exponential function in terms of relative density and deflection ratio. By comparing Brom's results with model results on the lateral ultimate load, it is found that short and long pile show the contrary results with each other. The contrary results are due to the smaller assumed soil reaction than the soil reaction of the Nakiong river sand at deep point. By comparing lateral behavior on the homogeneous soil with non-homogeneous soil, it is shown that lateral loadieflection relationship is very dependent on the upper relative density. This phenomenon is shown remarkably as the difference between upper and lower relative density increases.

  • Because pile behavior is governed by geotechnical characteristics of surrounding soils, it is therefore necessary to monitor ground responses during pile driving and analyze the relation between the behaviors of pile and ground. In this research, the 57 m long PHC pile was driven into deep soft clay in the Nakdong River estuary area. During and after the pile driving, the ground responses and the residual load of pile have been monitored for about a year, by using piezometers, inclinometers, level posts for surface settlement, and strain gauges in piles etc. As the results, the residual load by the negative skin friction along the pile increased with the dissipation of the excess pore pressure, which was developed by pile driving and reclamation. About 30% of the maximum residual load developed due to the dissipation of the increased excess pore pressure during the driving. It is thus emphasized that most piles driven in clay deposits need to be designed by considering negative skin friction along the pile.

  • Hollow prestressed concrete filled steel tube (HCFT) piles, which compose hollow PHC piles inside thin wall steel tubes, are developed. In order to investigate the strength characteristics of HCFT piles, flexural and shear tests were conducted on HCFT piles as well as PHC and steel pipe piles with the same diameter. Results of the test program showed that the flexural strength of HCFT piles was 2.88 and 1.19 times those of ICP and steel pipe piles with thickness of 12 mm, respectively, and its shear strength was 2.40 times that of steel pipe piles. The shear key attached to the inside of thin wall steel tube did not affect the flexural behavior of HCFT piles. It was also observed that the flexural strengths of HCFT piles with diameters of 450 and 500 mm were 35 to 63% higher than the sum of the flexural strengths of its components, respectively, because the strength of concrete in compressive zone increased by confining effect of thin wall steel tube on concrete. HCFT piles used as upper piles in hybrid composite piles might decrease the lateral displacement and increase the structural safety of structures subjected to lateral loads.

  • For the construction of 4.8km long Multi-Purpose Jamuna Bridge in Bangladesh, 2 or 3 large diameter open-ended steel pipe piles were used for the foundation of piers. A total of 123 piles were driven for 50 piers and 2 test piles from the river bed through the normally-consolidated upper sand layer and rested n top of gravel layer. Two types of piles, having 3.15 or 2.50m diameter and variable wall thickness in the range of 40 to 60mm, were driven to the depths of 69 to 74m with the rake of 6:1 by connecting 2 or 3 pieces of short piles. Dynamic pile tests were performed on 24 selected piles during pile driving and soil plug length inside the pile was also measured after driving of each short section. These piles were plugged with soil to, though slightly affected by pile diameters, about 75% of total length of pile driven. Active plug at the tip of pile contributed substantial amount of inner skin friction to the total capacity. Piles soon after driving showed a skin-friction dominant pile behaviour, tat is, 90% of total capacity being developed by skin resistance. Quakes values and Smith damping factors were almost constant regardless of pile diameters. This result reflects the influence of uniform soil condition at the site.
