This study was aimed to investigate the tensile behaviors of PE(Polyethylene) fiber-reinforced highly ductile cementitious composites with different combinations of micro silica sand and normal sand(river sand) with maximum particle size of 4.75 mm. Flow test result indicated the increase of flowability with higher replacement ratio of river sand. There was no noticeable difference in the mean compressive strength with different replacement ratio of river sand, but the variation in the compressive strength increased as higher amount of river sand was adopted for the replacement. The difference in the uniaxial tensile strength was negligible, but the tensile strain capacity was significantly influenced by the replacement ratio of river sand. It is thought that increased density of multiple cracks induced improved tensile strain capacity when higher percentage of river sand was adopted for fine aggregate. The deviation in the strain capacity increased as the replacement ratio of river sand was higher, as in the compressive strength. This study presented the feasibility of using normal sand instead of micro silica sand for highly ductile cementitious composites with equivalent or better uniaxial tensile performance, even though it might increase the deviation in the performance.
Alkali-activated slag (AAS) is the most obvious alternative materials that can replace OPC. But, AAS industrial usage as a structural material should be evaluated for its durability. Carbonation resistance is one of the most important factors in durability evaluation. Test results for 18 slag-based mortars activated by sodium silicate and 6 OPC mortars were obtained in this study to verify the carbonation property. Main variables considered in the study were flow, compressive strength before and after carbonation, and carbonation depth. Mineralogical and micro-structural analysis of OPC and AAS specimens prior to and after carbonation was conducted using XRD, TGA, FTIR FE-SEM. Test results showed that CHS was major hydration products of AAS and, unlike OPC, no other hydration products were found. After carbonation, CSH of hydration product in AAS turned into an amorphous silica gel, and alumina compounds was not detected. From the analysis of the results, it was estimated that the micro-structures of CSH in AAS easily collapsed during carbonation. Also, the results showed that this collapse of chemical chain of CSH lowered the compressive strength of concrete after carbonation. By increasing the dosage of activators, carbonation resistance and compressive strength were effectively improved.

Skew bridges are found frequently in new bridge construction due to geographical conditions when new constructing bridges are put across the existing highways, railroads or rivers. This study is to investigate the static behaviors of the steel deck plates of skew bridges which are increasingly used in bridges due to outstanding quality of structural steels, development of welding techniques, in order to reduce dead loads and period of constructions. The static behaviours of steel deck plates are analyzed using general purpose FE code SAP90 by modeling the skewed deck plates with rigorous finite elements, as the skew angles vary. The results of finite element analysis for the behaviors of steel deck plates and concrete slabs in acute, obtuse corners and center of decks are compared and discussed as the skew angles vary from $90^{\circ}$ to $30^{\circ}$. Two types of decks are treated, as isotropic plates and orthotropic plates, respectively. From the results of finite element analysis, it is found that more moments, reactions, and deflections occur at the obtuse corners than at the center of skewed decks regardless of isotropy or orthotropy. Especially, in case of the skewed deck plates with skew angles less than 45 degrees, significantly large discrepancies for the values of those internal forces are shown between the skewed and right deck plates. This study estimates the characteristics of deck behaviors according to skew angles, and proposes limitations of skew angles and the ciritical regions of decks.

Even though the longitudinally stiffened laminated composite plates with closed section ribs should be an effective system for axially compressed members, the existing researches on the applications of closed-section ribs, especially for the laminated composite plates, are not sufficient. This study is aimed to examine the influence of the sectional stiffness of U-shaped ribs on the buckling modes and strengths of laminated composite plates. Applying the orthotropic plates with eight layers of the layup $[(0^{\circ})_4]_s$ and $[(0^{\circ}/90^{\circ})_2]_s$, 3-dimensional finite element models for the U-rib stiffened plates were setup by using ABAQUS and then a series of eigenvalue analyses were conducted. From the parametric studies, the minimum required ply thicknesses as well as the buckling strengths were presented for the analysis models. The buckling strengths were compared with the theoretical critical stress equation for simply supported plates based on the Classical laminated plate theory. This study will contribute to the future study for evaluating the minimum required stiffness and optimum design of U-rib stiffened plates.
This paper presents the mix composition, production method, and curing condition applied to the extruded ECC(Engineered Cementitious Composite) panel which are able to exhibit multiple cracking and potential pseudo strain-hardening behavior. In addition to the production technique of extruded ECC panel, the effect of fiber distribution characteristics, which are uniquely created by applying extrusion process, on the flexural behavior of the panel is also focussed. In order to demonstrate fiber distribution, a series of experiments and analyses, including image processing/analysis and micro-mechanical analysis, was performed. The optimum mix composition of extruded ECC panel was determined in terms of water matrix ratio, the amount of cement, ECC powder, and silica powder. It was found that flexural behavior of extruded ECC panel was highly affected by the slight difference in mix composition of ECC panel. This is mainly because the difference in mix composition results in the change of micro-mechanical properties as well as fiber distribution characteristics, represented by fiber dispersion and orientation. In terms of the average fiber orientation, the fiber distribution was found to be similar to the assumption of two dimensional random distribution, irrespective of mix composition. In contrast, the probability density function for fiber orientation was measured to be quite different depending on the mix composition.
In these days, the interruption capability of some circuit breakers, which are installed in the transmission systems, is getting lower than the magnitude of the fault current because of continuous increase of power demand and relatively short power line which was installed in forms of mesh network As a result of these situations, fault current limiters (FCLs) are strongly necessary. There are various types which is investigated around the world, and new power apparatuses that have been newly considered and developed by many manufactures. In this paper, we considered resistive superconducting fault current limiters with YBCO thin films. The resistive limiters utilize a transition of YBCO films from superconducting to normal state caused by exceeding the critical current. By means of newly occurred impedance, the fault current will be limited effectively. Generally, a few current path patterns are available for YBCO films to enhance the current limiting performance of YBCO films. In this paper. the meander-type and the bi-spiral-type were used for current paths of YBCO flims. When YBCO films are quenched into the normal state, bubbles could be observed on the surface of YBCO films. Using our high-speed camera, the number of bubbles and the size of bubbles could be visualized and the relation between bubbles and current density was analyzed. By means of moving pictures of bubbles, we observed how the quench extended or how the heat was conducted in films.
In order to anticipate gradual increase of fault current in electric power systems, current limiting technology and current limiting device has been investigated for a long time. But the commercial use of current limiting device was delayed due to the lack of effective method to insert impedance to the elective power systems without loss and surplus defects. However, novel current limiting device, which use superconducting materials, was considered as a dream technology to be applied in a distribution and transmission lines. LG Industrial systems and KERPI started to investigate resistive type superconducting fault current limiters in order to develop 154kV fault current limiters and this year, we succeed to test 3 phase 6.6kV/200A fault current limiters. Based on these achievements, 24kV superconducting fault current limiters will be realized withing 3 years which could be tested in a real fields. In this paper, the developments of fault current limiting module which use YBCO thin films, cryogenic systems, the structure and construction of 3 phase fault current limiters and finally the test results of 6.6kV superconducting fault current limiters will be introduced.

We fabricated and tested a resistive type superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) of three-phase 6.6 $kV_{rms}/200 A_{rms}$ rating based on YBCO thin films grown on sapphire substrates with a diameter of 4 inches, Short circuit tests were carried out at a accredited test facility for single line-to- ground faults, phase-to-phase faults and three-phase faults, Each phase of the SFCL was composed of 8${\times}$6 elements connected in series and parallel respectively. Each element was designed to have the rated voltage of 600 $V_{rms}$. A NiCr shunt resistor of 23 Ω was connected to each element for simultaneous quenches. Firstly, single phase-to-ground fault tests were carried out. The SFCL successfully developed the impedance in the circuit within 0.12 msec after fault and controlled the fault current of 10 $kA_{rms} below 816 A_{peak}$ at the first half cycle. In addition, in case of phase-to-phase fault and three- phase fault test. simultaneous quenches among the SFCLs of the phases successfully accomplished. In conclusion. the SFCL showed excellent performance of current limitation upon fault and stable operation regardless of the amplitude of fault currents.

Currently in increasing number of urban tunnels with small overburden are excavated according to the principle of the New Austrian Tunneling Method(NATM). Successful design, construction and maintenance of NATM tunnel demands prediction, control and monitoring of ground displacement and support stress high accuracy. A magnetic anisotropy sensor is used for non-destructive measurement of stress on surfaces of a ferromagnetic material, such as steel. The sensor is built on the principle of the magneto-strictive effect in which changes in magnetic permeability due to deformation of a ferromagnetic material is measured in a non-destructive manner, which then can be translated into the absolute values of stresses existing on the surface of the material. This technique was applied to measure stresses of H-beams, used as tunnel support structures, to confirm expected measurement accuracy with reading error of about 10 to 20MPa, which was confirmed by monitoring strains released during cutting tests The results show that this method could be one of the promising technologies for non-destructive stress measurement for safe construction and maintenance of underground rock structures encountered in civil and mining engineering.
This paper describes a method for a falling weight impact test to estimate the impact energy absorbing characteristics and impact strength of CFRP laminate plates based on considerations of stress wave propagation theory. The absorbed energy of T300 orthotropic composites is higher than that of quasi-isotropic specimen over impact energy 6.8J, but in case of using T700 fiber, much difference does not show. Also, absorbed energy of T300 orthotropic composites, which are composed of the same stacking number and orientation became more than that of T700 fiber specimen; however there was no big difference in case of quasi-isotropic specimens. The delamination areas of the impacted specimen were measured with the ultrasonic C-scanner to find correlation between impact energy and delamination area. The fracture surfaces were observed by using the SEM (scanning electron microscope) through a low-velocity impact test in order to confirm the fracture mechanism.
