  • In this paper, the optimization of frictional bearings that applied to improve the seismic performance of conventional bridges were conducted. The nonlinear dynamic analysis of steel bridges and concrete bridges are carried out with the El Centro and artificial earthquake motions, and the reponses of the bridges were optimized by genetic algorithm. The object functions were considered with two parameters, such as shear forces and displacements at bearing, and the optimum object functions were searched by varying the weighting factors of the two parameters. As results, in case of the steel bridges, the optimum results were obtained when larger weight factor was imposed to the shear force. However, in case of concrete bridges, larger weight factor was need to the displacement for optimum results.

  • Recently, the demand for pollution-free demolition work of old reinforced concrete and steel structure has rapidly increased as the redevelopment of urban area has been accelerated. This study deals with linear shape charges for explosive jet cutting on steel structure. We have tested material and shape of steel structure, characteristics of thickness and strength, shape of linear shape charges, type of shape charges, cumulative charges, type of liner, stand-off distance, detonation method. effect of sound and vibration by air blast in explosive jet cutting method. So, We developed linear shape charges in order to take advantage of optimum explosive jet cutting condition. Shape charges were made of PETN explosives. We obtained the experimental formula to decide the amount of explosive needed for thickness of steel structure plate. There are prospects for application of the explosion curving technology under the open space conditions for dismantling the steel structure and steel bridge, scrapped old boats, which are going out of service.

  • In the case of the superstructure which is consist of two I girders and slab, the section can behave as II section, so that the neutral axis with respect to out of plane direction flexure can be regarded as major axis. Therefore in-plane flexural mode might govern the free vibration mode. Meanwhile, horizontally curved girders always experience not only bending moments but also torsional moments although the primary load is usually supposed to be gravitational load. The interaction due to bending and torsional moments make the behavior complicated and torsional mode may govern the free vibration mode. In other words, structure can have different dynamic characteristic due to its initial curvature. In this research, using 3-dimensional sell elements, free-vibration analyses are carried out due to initial curvature. The analysis models are assumed to be composite and non-composite and finally natural frequency and eigen mode are discussed.

  • Total scour depth at a bridge is comprised of three components: long-term changes, contraction scour and local scour. Therefore, the analysis of long-term bed elevation changes is very important in the estimation of total scour depth at bridge sites. In this research, long-term bed elevation changes at the Namhan River Bridge are analysed using CHARIMA and HEC-6 models. The results show that, for 5-year steady normal stream flow, the bed elevation is aggreded by 45cm for CHARIMA model but degraded by 5cm for HEC-6 model. For 5-year unsteady flow, the bed elevation is changed greatly and it has a great influence on the estimation of total scour depth. Therefore, to make a proper estimation of total scour depth, not only contraction scour and local scour, but also long-term bed elevation changes should be estimated precisely.

  • This paper proposes an optimal design method for the nonlinear seismic isolated bridge. The probabilities of failure at the pier and the seismic isolator are considered as objective functions for optimal design, and a multi-objective optimization technique is employed to efficiently explore a set of multiple solutions optimizing mutually-conflicting objective functions at the same time. In addition, a stochastic linearization method is incorporated into the multi-objective optimization framework in order to effectively estimate the stochastic responses of the bridge without performing numerous nonlinear time history analyses during the optimization process. As a numerical example to demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed method, the Nam-Han river bridge is taken into account, and the proposed method and the existing life-cycle-cost based design method are both applied for the purpose of comparing their seismic performances. The comparative results demonstrate that the proposed method not only shows better seismic performance but also is more economical than the existing cost-based design method. The proposed method is also proven to guarantee improved performance under variations in seismic intensity, in bandwidth and in the predominant frequency of the seismic event.

  • Recently in Japan, fracturing was observed on the diagonal member of a through truss bridge at the boundary region with the concrete slab. Local corrosion damage where the diagonal member was enclosed in the concrete slab is an important factor in the fracture. In this study, accelerated exposure tests were carried out on concrete-steel model specimens simulating steel members at the boundary with concrete. Fatigue tests were then performed on the corroded model specimens. Accelerated exposure tests of the S6-cycle, which is carried out on the model specimens for 150, 300, 450 and 600 da ys. Their surface geometry was then measured. From the accelerated exposure test results, change in maximum and mean corrosion depths was determined according to the testing periods. The effect of local corrosion on fatigue strength was also presented based on the fatigue test results.

  • Bridge has to be long-spanned and of simple structure, considering the social environment. As a result of this trend in bridge construction, it is important for the sake of economical efficiency to improve the structural system and increase the life cycle of a bridge. To attain these goals in constructing a steel bridge, the detail analyses based on real structure must be performed. In the steel structure bridge, the parts that are a main focus of interest are the diaphragm and the vertical bracing of the steel box girder support. This study observed the behavior of the diaphragms on the bearings of a closed section steel box girder bridge support, as dead load was increased. Stress variation of the support diaphragms in a steel box girder was considered, and both experimental test and structural analyses were performed to verify the behavior of a composite steel box girder bridge under repair or maintenance.

  • This study developed an analysis model of estimating fatigue damage using the linear elastic fracture mechanics method. Stress history occurring to an element when a truck passed over a bridge was defined as block loading and crack closure theory explaining load interaction effect was applied. Stress range frequency analysis considering dead load stress and crack opening was done. Probability of stress range frequency distribution was applied and the probability distribution parameters were estimated. The Monte Carlo simulation of generating the probability various of distribution was performed. The probability distribution of failure block numbers was obtained. With this the fatigue reliability of an element not occurring in failure could be calculated. The failure block number divided by average daily truck traffic remains the life of a day. Fatigue reliability analysis model was carried out for the welding member of cross beam flange and vertical stiffener of steel box bridge using the proposed model. Consequently, a 3.8% difference was observed between the remaining life in the peak analysis method and in the proposed analysis model. The proposed analysis model considered crack closure phase and crack retard.
