  • Hydrodynamic characteristics of shipping water on deck are investigated by using a simplified two-dimensional model. Formulation of the shipping water on deck leads to a nonlinear hyperbolic system of equations based on the shallow-water wave theory. Time-domain solution of these equations are obtained numerically using a finite difference method which adopts predictor-corrector method for time-marching and 2nd upwind differencing method for convection term calculation. To confirm the validity of the present numerical method, we calculated some shallow-water wave problems accompanying a bore and compared the obtained results with the analytic solutions. We found good agreements between them. Though the calculation results of shipping water on deck, we show that the shipping water flows into the deck as a rarefying wave arid grows into a bore after colliding with a deck structure. Also we examined the effects of acceleration and slope of deck and found that they have significant influences on the flow of shipping water.

  • In this paper, the effects of bow deck shape on the green water are studied by numerical and experimental method. Varying the deck shapes to triangular, elliptic and circular, the thickness and advancing velocity of green water leading edge are compared using numerical method. Also the motion, the pressure on the vertical wall and the height on the deck of green water are compared among the three bow deck shapes in the heave and pitch motion free condition by experimental method. To remove the effects of the difference of motions among the deck shapes, numerical simulations are performed varying the deck shape with the same motion. In the same motion condition, smallest impulsive pressure occurred in the condition of elliptic deck shape.

  • In this research, the relationship between the bow shape and green water phenomenon on the bow deck of an FPSO was studied using an experimental method. A 140,000 DWT FPSO was used as the objective hull form in the present research. The incident waves were regular types. The heights were 1.0 and 1.5 times the freeboard, and the length was equal in size to LBP. The wave heights and pressures on the deck were measured in experiments. Model tests were performed to determine the effects of bow flare angles, bow shapes, and a forecastle deck. The free heave and pitch conditions were applied to the models in these experiments. From the results of the model tests, an optimized bow shape was designed, which was found to decrease the green water impact loading. The results of this research could be used as fundamental data in the design of a bow shape.

  • The green water on deck has many harmful effects on the vessel in rough seas such as damages to hull structures, damages to cargos, increase of the downtime, decrease of the stability, and so on. Floating Production Storage and Offloading vessels (FPSOs) are operated in a specific location and are normally positioned to meet mostly head or bow waves in order to reduce the roll motions. But this makes FPSOs more vulnerable to green water around the bow region therefore the bow shape should be properly designed to mitigate the green water damage. In this paper, experimental results in regular head waves for three kinds of bow shapes are compared and some design considerations are proposed, with the building a database for computational fluid dynamics (CFD) validation in mind.

  • Prediction of green water loads acting on the bow deck is au essential part for the design of bow structures against the green water impact. Proper technique of the green water simulation is highly required for the prediction of green water loads. in this paper, the green water flow on bow deck is simulated by FDM(finite difference method). Using the results of green water simulation, impact load on bow deck is calculated. Also, experiments are carried out to compare with the numerical calculation. Through the comparisons between experimental results and numerical results, it is verified that the present numerical tool is adequate as a practical calculation tool for the green water problem.

  • Green water load is an important parameter to be considered in designing a modern ship or offshore structures like FPSO and FSRU. In this research, a numerical simulation method for green water phenomenon is introduced. The Navier-Stokes equations and the continuity equation are used as governing equations. The equations are calculated using Finite Difference Method(FDM) in rectangular staggered grid system. To increase the numerical accuracy near the body, the Cartesian cut cell method is employed. The nonlinear free-surface during green water incident is defined by Marker-density method. The green waters on a box in regular waves are simulated. The simulation results are compared with other experimental and computational results for verification. To check the applicability to moving ship, the green water of the ship which is towed by uniform force in regular wave, is simulated. The ship is set free to heave and to surge.

  • It is very important to investigate and understand the motion of a FPSO on waves because green water phenomenon occurs owing to the relative motions between incident waves and a ship on them. In this research, both experimental and some numerical approaches have been performed in head sea conditions with regular waves. As an object model of this research, a FPSO model is set free to heave and pitch during the experiments. Also, the motions of the FPSO model which are the results of the experiments are used for the corresponding numerical computations. The purpose of this study is to clarify the effect of bow flare on green water load. In this research, it is found that the amount of green water entered from the side of bow is decreased by the increase of bow flare angle. Moreover, the relation between the green water on the bow upper deck and the impact load on the vertical wall located at turrethead is investigated. The results of this research could be used as one of the fundamental data to design bow flares. Also, an optimized bow flare angle is proposed in this study.

  • In the study, numerical simulation on the greenwater impact load of free surface offshore structure in the regular waves using fixed cartesian grid system and Modified Marker-Density (MMD) method were carried out and the results were reviewed. In order to compare numerical simulation and experimental results, the FPSO with the scale ratio of 1/100 model ship with fixed rectangular deck was selected and turbulence characteristic of the flow was considered by applying the Sub-Grid Scale (SGS) in laminar flow. As a result, it is reviewed how the greenwater impact load inflowed from bow in regular headsea wave influence the flow on the deck and the flow characteristic by numerical simulation and the experiment results were compared and reviewed. Based on this study, it would be useful to numerically study the effect of greenwater on offshore structure.

  • In rough seas, water breaker of the sea-going ships is subject to high impact loads due to the green water and some ships' water breaker suffers structure damage. So, a substantial research on the structural response caused by green water impact is required. In this paper, the green water flow on bow deck is simulated by FDM(finite differential method). Using the results of green water simulation, impact loads on water breaker are calculated. Calculation results of the 6200TEU container ship's structural response to this green water impact pressure are shown and discussed for two condiered calculation conditions.
