The wake galloping phenomenon is evaluated for two cylinders via two-dimensional wind tunnel tests. The two cylinders are deployed parallel to the inclination of the vertical plane, which simulates the inclined stay cables of a cable-stayed bridge. The upstream and downstream displacements of the cylinder are observed with varying center distances between the two cylinders. The effect of structural damping on the mitigation of wake galloping is also investigated. The amplitude of the vibration is very sensitive to center distance between the two cylinders. The maximum amplitudes exceededthe allowable limit of the design guidelines for small center distances of less than or equal to six times the diameter of the cylinder. The overall results conformedto the conventional design practice for the wake galloping of parallel cables. It was found, however, that the increase in the damping was not effective in reducing the amplitude of the vibration in the wake galloping phenomenon.
The position of the bridged tap is determined by that of the outlet in most modern apartments, since most of the indoor wiring utilizes the bus wiring structure when deploying the indoor communication line. These bridged taps deteriorate transmission performance in the specific frequency at the time of high-speed multimedia communication, which uses a high frequency bandwidth, since the duality of return loss worsens and line attenuation increases rapidly. As a result, analysis on this phenomenon is required. In this study, the test model is created by modeling the intercommunication facility of the apartment that is the most representative residential house type, and by understanding the structure and the environment of the indoor wiring. Also, how the bridge tap affects performance is analyzed when the VDSL service is provided, so that problems of intercommunication lines can be identified and methods for improving the proper intercommunication line can be suggested, which is suitable for accommodating high-speed multimedia service of the future.

Eight small scale circular reinforced concrete columns were tested under cyclic lateral load with constant axial load. Test specimens were designed with 4.5 aspect ratio. The selected test variables are longitudinal steel ratio, transverse steel ratio, yielding strength of longitudinal steel and axial load ratio. The test results of columns with different longitudinal steel ratio, transverse steel ratio and axial load ratio showed different seismic performance such as equivalent damping ratio, residual displacement and effective stiffness. It was found that the column with low strength of longitudinal steel showed significantly reduced seismic performance, especially for equivalent damping ratio and residual displacement. The regulation of flexural over-strength is adopted by Korea Bridge Design Specifications (Limited state design, 2012). The test results are compared with nominal strength, result of nonlinear moment-curvature analysis and the design specifications such as AASHTO LRFD and Korea Bridge Design Specifications (Limited state design).

This paper presents substructural identification methods for the assessment of local damages in complex and large structural systems. For this purpose, an auto-regressive and moving average with stochastic input (ARMAX) model is derived for a substructure to process the measurement data impaired by noises. Using the substructural methods, the number of unknown parameters for each identification can be significantly reduced, hence the convergence and accuracy of estimation can be improved. Secondly, the damage index is defined as the ratio of the current stiffness to the baseline value at each element for the damage assessment. The indirect estimation method was performed using the estimated results from the identification of the system matrices from the substructural identification. To demonstrate the proposed techniques, several simulation and experimental example analyses are carried out for structural models of a 2-span truss structure, a 3-span continuous beam model and 3-story building model. The results indicate that the present substructural identification method and damage estimation methods are effective and efficient for local damage estimation of complex structures.

A series of papers in recent literature on logical topology design for wavelength routed optical networks have proposed mathematical models and solution methods unifying logical topology design wavelength assignment and traffic routing. The most recent one is by Krishnaswamy and Sivarajan which is more unifying and complete than the previous models. Especially the mathematical formulation is an integer linear program and hence regarded in readiness for an efficient solution method compared to the previous nonlinear programming models. The solution method in [7] is however elementary one relying on the rounding of linear program relaxation. When the rounding happens to be successful it tends to produce near-optimal solutions. In general there is no such guarantee so that the obtained solution may not satisfy the essential constraints such as logical -path hop-count and even wavelength number constraints. Also the computational efforts for linear program relaxation seems to be too excessive. In this paper we propose an improved and unifying solution method based on the same to be too excessive. In this paper we propose an improved and unifying solution method based on the same model. First its computation is considerably smaller. Second it guarantees the solution satisfies all the constraints. Finally applied the same instances the quality of solution is fairly competitive to the previous near optimal solution.

To effectively delineate the foundation of stone relics by GPR and seismic refraction methods, a geological engineering model was constructed with alternating layer of soil and gravel to a depth of 3 m. This study was aimed at mapping the boundaries of model ground structure and interfaces of alternating layer using the various frequency antenna in GPR survey and seismic velocities. Compared to the resolution from the high frequency antenna, the image resolution from the survey using 100 Hz antenna is the lower, but with the deeper image coverage. On the contrast, the deeper structure was not mapped in the higher frequency data due to higher absorption effect, but the shallow layered zone was distinctively resolved. Therefore subsurface images were effectively provided by integrating the data with 100 MHz and 450 MHz antennas for the deep and shallow structures, respectively. Regarding the seismic refraction data, the boundaries of the model and interface of the alternating layers were not successfully mapped due to the limit of the survey length. However, the equivalent contours of low velocity extended deep as considerable velocity contrasts with surrounding ground.

In this paper the efficient channel models of the subscriber loops for the ISDN U-interface digital transmission are presented. Several configuration medels of the loop network are adopted from the CCITT recommendations, and various parameters specifying the physical dimensions are determined in accordance with the measurements of the loop characteristics of Korea. A typical loop interfacing circuit is applied at both ends of the loops and the overall transmissing circuit model is obtained. Based on this circuit model of transmission. 3 types of signal path models, related to transmission, echo, and near end crosstalk noise are defined and their transfer function are respectively derived as the channel models. As examples of the proposed channel models, numerical calculation has been performed for some loop configuration models and the channel responses are investigation in both domains of frequency and time. It is shown that various changes of the loop characteristics can well be explained in terms of the proposed models. And these models can efficiently be used for the simulation of the digital transmission over the subscriber loop.

The types of dam-break have been classified as instantaneous and gradual failure. Equations for estimating the peak outflow have been derived respectively as a metric unit. New dimensionless routing curves have been deveoloped based on the distance parameter which has been used in SMPDBK and hydro-geometric characteristics of dams and reservoirs in Korea. These suggested curves can be used for any case of the flow of supercritical or subcritical. The computed peak flowrate shows the trend of decreasing dependence on the Froude numbers as it increases. These curves are applied to Hyogi dam. and the results have good agreements with the data observed in the peak discharges, peak elevations and flood travel time. The simplified dam-break model in this study would contribute effectively to forecast the dam-break flood in this country with minimum informations in a short time.
The DAMBRK is applied to Janghyeon and Dongmak reservoirs in Namdaecheon basin, where two reservoirs were failed due to Typhoon Rusa in 2002. Relaxation scheme is added to DAMBRK to consider the tributary cross-section because two reservoirs are in tributary valleys. In addition, this study suggests the method to utilize the reservoir breach formation time of ASDSO (2005) and empirical formulas for peak break outflow from dam to reduce the uncertainty of reservoir breach formulation time. The single break of Janghyeon reservoir and consecutive break of Janghyeon and Dongmak reservoirs with the suggested method are considered. While the breach discharge from reservoirs rushes down, the discharge and water surface elevation along the river are predicted, and the predictions show the attenuation phenomena of reservoir break floodwave. The applicability of the model is validated by comparing the predicted height with field surveyed data, and showing good agreements between predictions and measurements.
In this study, breakwater model which has several outlet pipes to discharge heated water is settled in the experimental open channel and velocity distribution of wall jet is measured. Numerical simulation of velocity structure of wall jet using 3-dimensional computer model. Fluent model, is also carried out. The calculated results are verified with the experimental results and the flow characteristics of wall jet are investigated. The length of zone of flow establishment of wall jet is shorter than that of free jet, and the diminution rate of jet centerline longitudinal velocity is larger than that of free jet. Characteristics of buoyant jet and non-buoyant simple jet simulated by Fluent model are compared. Near the outlet pipe, in the region where x/lQ is over 15, this is reversed. Comparison of vertical distribution of longitudinal velocity shows that positive velocity of non-buoyant jet is bigger than that of buoyant jet in the bottom layer and in the upper layer, negative velocity of non-buoyant jet is bigger too. Flow separation in free surface of the buoyant jet occurs in smaller distances from the outlet than the non-buoyant jet. Buoyant jet expands faster than the non-buoyant jet in vertical direction.
