  • The aggregate, which does not satisfy the standard of KS F 2573, was selected for this investigation. The 28day compressive strength of recycled aggregate concrete without pozzolan material was 21.7MPa, which was less than the strength of concrete made with crushed stone. However, the compressive strength at 28 days was improved by mixing early rapid hardening cement to the cement at the weight ratio of 2.5%. Furthermore, the compressive strength at 91 days and 180 days increased significantly by adding fly ash, slag powder, and diatom powder. The tensile strength of recycled aggregate concrete with pozzolan material also increased about 40% compared to the general concrete. Futhermore, the shrinkage and creep of recycled aggregate concrete with fly ash and slag powder was a little decreased that of recycled aggregate concrete with fly ash and diatom powder. Relationship between compressive strength and creep coefficient was shown to the linear relation like as ${\sigma}_c=-30CF+404$.

  • The effects of the specimen size and temperature on the compressive strength of ATJ graphite were investigated. Compressive tests were conducted in accordance with ASTM C 965 at room temperature, $700^{\circ}C$ and $900^{\circ}C$. Three types of cylindrical specimen at room temperature were used in uniaxial tests, where the diameter-to - length ratios were one to two for the ASTM standard specimen, one to one for the Type I specimen, and one to 0.5 for the Type II specimen. Two kinds of cylindrical specimens, with and without antioxidant coating, were tested at elevated temperature. The Compressive strength of the expanded specimens(Type I, II) were slightly higher than that of standard specimen at room temperature. The compressive strength of a specimen with antioxidant coating increased as the temperature increased to $900^{\circ}C$. In contrast, that of the non-coated specimen decreases sharply due to the oxidation of the specimen.

  • This paper investigates strength characteristics and stress-strain behaviors of geogrid mixing reinforced lightweight soil. The lightweight soil was reinforced with geogrid in order to increase its compressive strength. Test specimens were fabricated by various mixing conditions including cement content, initial water content, air content and geogrid layer and then unconfined compression tests were carried out. From the experimental results, it was found that unconfined compressive strength as well as stress-strain behavior of lightweight soil was strongly influenced by mixing conditions. The more cement content that is added to the mixture, the greater its unconfined compressive strength. However, the more initial water content or the more air foam content, the less its unconfined compressive strength. It was observed that the compressive strength of reinforced lightweight soil increased reinforcing effect by the geogrid for most cases. Stress-strain relation of geogrid mixing reinforced lightweight soil showed a ductile behavior rather than a brittle behavior. In reinforced lightweight soil, secant modulus ($E_{50}$) also increased as its compressive strength increased due to the inclusion of geogrid.

  • Geopolymers produced from aluminosilicate materials such as metakaolin and coal ash react with alkali activators and show higher fire resistance than portland cement, due to amorphous inorganic polymer. The percentage of thermal shrinkage of geopolymers ranges from less than 0.5 % to about 3 % until $600^{\circ}C$, and reaches about 5 ~ 7 % before melting. In this study, geopolymers paste having Si/Al = 1.5 and being mixed with carbon nanofibers, silicon carbide, pyrex glass, and vermiculite, and ISO sand were studied in order to understand the compressive strength and the effects of thermal shrinkage of geopolymers. The compressive strength of geopolymers mixed by carbon nanofibers, silicon carbide, pyrex glass, or vermiculite was similar in the range from 35 to 40 MPa. The average compressive strength of a geopolymers mixed with 30 wt.% of ISO sand was lowest of 28 MPa. Thermal shrinkage of geopolymers mixed with ISO sand decreased to about 25 % of paste. This is because the aggregate particles expanded on firing and to compensate the shrinkage of paste. The densification of the geopolymer matrix and the increase of porosity by sintering at $900^{\circ}C$ were observed regardless of fillers.

  • In this paper, the importance of the size effects on the strength ratio is demonstrated by numerical results. The rate of decrease of tensile strength is for glass fiber, based on the experience of a composite manufacturing specialist. For other material, similar procedure may be used until detailed test result on such material is available. The strength criterion used is that of Tsai-Wu fur stress space. The factors influencing the ratio are, reducing the tensile strength alone or both tensile and compression strengths, selection of the normalized interaction term, that is, the generalized von Mises criterion or the Hill's criterion, and the status of applied stresses. Some of the numerical results are presented for a guideline for the future study.

  • This article presents the results of experimental study that investigates the effect of filler and shrinkage reducing agent influencing on the strength properties of MMA-modified polymer paste that was produced to develop the surface-repair and coating materials of the concrete structures. Results show that the flexural and compressive strengths of the polymer paste increased 29 and 27%, respectively, when the aluminum hydroxide completely replaced the calcium carbonate as the filler Furthermore, when the shrinkage reducing agent was used 30%, both strengths decreased about 29% comparing to when the agent was not used. As in the cases of flexural and compressive strengths, the adhesive strength increased as the content of aluminum hydroxide as the filler increased, and it decreased as the content of shrinkage reducing agent increased. The adhesive strength with a dry concrete substrate turned out to be $30{\sim}40%$ higher than that with a wet concrete substrate.

  • This paper reports results of an investigation to determine properties of superplasticizered fly ash concrete. The mixture proportions of fly ash were 0, 10, 20 and 30%, by weight of cement, and superplasticizer was added as a percentage of fly ash, 0, 0.6, 12 and 1.8%. To investigate the effective use of the superplasticized fly ash concrete, the basic data were analyzed. The results obtained were summarized as follows : 1. The unit water content was decreased by 1%, 6% and increased by 2% to the ratio of addition of fly ash 10%, 20%, 30%, respectively, but in case of the superplasticized fly ash concrete, it was decreased by 3~16%, 4~14% and 10~17%, at 0.6, 12, and 1.8% dosage of superplasticizer, respectively. 2. In the properties of the fresh fly ash concrete, the slump loss was reduced with the ratio of replacement of fly ash increased, and with times went by. When using superplasticizer in fly ash substituting concrete, the fludity in the concrete was not decreased. 3. The compressive strength of fly ash concrete at early ages was lower than that of ordinary concrete. At the later age of 28 days, the compressive strength with 20% addition of fly ash was increased than that of ordinary concrete. In cased of 10%, 30% addition of fly ash, the compressive strength were reduced. From this, it was proved that the optimum amount of fly ash appears to be about 20%. The compressive strength at all ages of superplasticized fly ash concrete was significantly higher than that of fly ash concrete, with increasing fly ash content. 4. In case of the tensile strength, the effects of the increasing strength with the ages were similar to those of the compressive strtength, and at the later ages was seen a decreasing tendency of strengths. 5. The correlation between compressive and tensile strength of superplasticized fly ash concrete was highly significant. The multiple regression equations of compressive and tensile strength were obtained on a function of the mixture proportion of fly ash and the addition of superplasticizer. The relation between compressive and tensile strength is higher than for ordinary concrete. The strength ratio is 7~11, and it is higher than that of ordinary concrete, 8~10. 6. Bulk density was decreased by 1~3% compared with ordinary concrete with the mixture proportion of fly ash increased, 10~30%, and decreased by 1~2% with the superplasticizer added 0.6~1.8%.

  • Recently, the effects of high temperature on compressive strength, elastic modulus and strain at peak stress of high strength concrete were experimentally investigated. The present study is aimed to study the effect of elevated temperatures ranging from 20 to $700^{\circ}C$ on the material mechanical properties of high-strength concrete of 40, 60, 80MPa grade. In this study, the types of test were the stressed test and stressed residual test that the specimens are subjected to a 25% of ultimate compressive strength at room temperature and sustained during heating and when target temperature is reached, the specimens are loaded to failure. Or specimens are loaded to failure after 24hour cooling time. tests were conducted at various temperatures ($20{\sim}700^{\circ}C$) for concretes made with W/B ratios 46%, 32% and 25%. Test results showed that the relative values of compressive strength and elastic modulus decreased with increasing compressive strength grade of specimen.
