  • Using numerous ground-based or space-based telescopes by many astronomers, AGN spectroscopic monitoring campaigns have been carried out over many years to study the variability of continua and emission lines. We investigate the SWP IUE spectra of a large aperture configuration for the Seyfert 1 galaxies NGC 4151 and NGC 5548. We estimate the BLR electron number densities and their variation from the line ratios of C III] 1909 to Si III] 1892. With the ratios of C IV 1550 to C III] 1909 which give us the information on the ionization parameter of BLR, we try to find the physical conditions of the BLR and activities of he super massive black hole surroundings. The BLR density variations scale as 4 and 8 for NGC 4151 and NGC 5548, respectively. Based on the BLR size and C III] line profiles, we found both black hole masses as about $10^7$ $M_{\odot}$.

  • As the pulse heights from a NaI(Tl) detector vary with the temperature of the measuring environment a significant change in temperature may affect the energy calibration of the spectrometer. The auto-adjustment of the channel corresponding to a pulse heights can be achieved by introducing an external reference source to compensate the temperature dependency of pulse heights, but unfavorable increases of the Compton continuum are caused due to the external source. In this study, the total absorption peaks dominant in the typical environmental gamma spectrum-239 keV from $^{212}Pb$, 351 keV from $^{214}Pb$, 1460 keV from $^{40}K$ and 2614 keV from $^{208}Tl$ for examples - were used as reference in the correction of energy calibration. With these peaks, the program to calibrate the energy of the s spectrum was developed using Microsoft Visual Basic language. The program developed here was applied to the environmental spectra measured at intervals of 30 minutes in the temperature range of from $-20^{\circ}C$ to $10^{\circ}C$ to demonstrate the validity and applicability. As a result of the test, the correction scheme appeared to be effective in the temperature changes encountered in the usual environment.

  • Characteristics of natural radioactivity were investigated for soils collected from seven sites of different bed rocks distributed in the Keum River area of Korea by the use of a Gamma-ray spectrometry. Specific activity (SA) and SA ratio (SAR) of typical naturally occurring radioactive nuclide such as $^{226}$Ra, $^{228}$Ac and $^{40}$K were determined for the soil samples. The SA values of $^{226}$Ra, $^{228}$Ac and $^{40}$K in 41 soils of 7 sites are 26.7-485 (74.2 ${\pm}$ 72.2), 30.9-157 (90.7 ${\pm}$ 32.7) and 203-1558 (990 ${\pm}$ 203) Bq/kg, respectively. The SA of $^{226}$Ra has very different values by the soils and the sites. Especially the SA of $^{226}$Ra in a soil sample of Ogcheon site is 485 Bq/kg while most SA of 41 soil samples are < 100 Bq/kg. SA of $^{228}$Ac has a little different values with the soils and sites, however the SA of $^{40}$K has almost constant values in all soil samples. The SAR values of $^{26}$Ra/$^{228}$Ac, $^{226}$Ra/$^{40}$K and $^{228}$Ac/$^{40}$K in 41 soils of 7 sites are 0.343-6.11 (0.865 ${\pm}$ 0.883), 0.0258-0.759 (0.0814 ${\pm}$ 0.1l17) and 0.0373-0.178 (0.0945 ${\pm}$ 0.0373), respectively. The SARs of $^{226}$Ra/$^{228}$Ac and $^{226}$Ra/$^{40}$K have very different values by the soils and the sites, however the SAR of $^{228}$Ac/$^{40}$K has a little difference by the soil and sites.

  • In the natural, there exist several kinds of radioactive isotopes. From atmospheric weapon tests and then some isotopes are naturally radioactivity above all things, nuclear power plant operation and man-made radioactive isotopes concern steadily growing in the environment. During the fission process of nuclear weapon tests and nuclear power plant operation, more than 200 radioactive isotopes are generated. Among them, $^{90}Sr$ and $^{137}Cs$ has been regarded as very important isotopes due to characteristics. In this paper, a quantitative analysis method of environment low level $^{90}Sr$ is studied. Radioactivity level of the environmental $^{90}Sr$ is very low, and it emits continuous beta spectrum, and $^{90}Sr$ exists together with $^{89}Sr$, $^{90}Y$ and other radioactive isotopes. It very difficult to make the quantitative analysis of $^{90}Sr$. For the analysis of low level radioactive strontium, enrich and chemical separation of strontium from the other radioactive isotopes are needed. For the estimation of strontium recovery ratio, so called SGAT(Strontium Gravimetric Analysis Technique) was generally used among the domestic research groups, and chemical procedures were developed appropriation for the SGAT, Recently, by using ICP(Inductively Coupled atomic Plasma emission spectrophotometer), amounts of stable atoms can be measured easily and accurately to the extend of ppm or ppb. In this paper, new chemical procedures are developed to exploits the ICP technique. New developed method has simpler chemical treatment procedures and then it gives more accurate results compared with the traditional SGAT.

  • The radioactive iodine ($^{131}I$) presents in the environment through the excrete process of nuclear medicine patients. In the detecting of low level of $^{131}I$ in the public water, the counting uncertainty has an effect on the accuracy and reliability of detecting $^{131}I$ radioactivity concentration. In this study, the contribution of sample amount, radioactivity concentration and counting time to the uncertainty was investigated in the case of public water sample. Sampling points are public water and the effluents of a sewage treatment plant at Sapkyocheon stream, Geumgang river. In each point, 1, 10 and 20 L of liquid samples were collected and prepared by evaporation method. The HPGe (High Purity Germanium) detector was used to detect and analyze emitted gamma-ray from samples. The radioactivity concentration of $^{131}I$ were in the range of 0.03 to 1.8 Bq/L. The comparison of the counting uncertainty of the sample amount, 1 L sample is unable to verify the existence of the $^{131}I$ under 0.5 Bq/L radioactivity concentration. Considering the short half-life of $^{131}I$ (8.03 days), a method for measuring 1 L sample was used. However comparing the detecting and preparing time of 1, 10 L respectively, detecting 10 L sample would be an appropriate method to distinguish $^{131}I$ concentration in the public water.

  • Purpose With regard to the use of radioiodine in domestic medical institution, the case of exceeding the allowance of nuclear safety Act about radioactive concentration in drainage was found. Through understanding the cause of exceeding case and analyzing radioactive concentration in drainage, evaluating the relationship of the public waters in surroundings and usefulness. Materials and Methods From November 1, 2014 to April 30th, 2015, the research is aiming at domestic twenty hospitals for six months. By using a HPGe gamma-ray spectrometer(Canberra DSA-1000) and GENIE-2000 Analysis software for comparative analysis, measuring a radioactive concentration of radioiodine in drainage. Consequently, we confirm the excess of radioactive concentration of radioiodine in seven medical institutions. Results Conducting a survey of twenty hospitals and average radioactive concentration of radioiodine in drainage appears $42,100Bq/m^3$. The features of domestic hospitals where show a high radioactive concentration are a number of medical treatment patient when using radioactive iodine and the absence of private rest room. During I-131 whole body scan, the pretreatment procedure of urinating is considered emission of residual Iodine. In public waters, the cause of exceeding detect on radioactive concentration in drainage suppose a diagnostic radioactive iodine. Conclusion We confirm the importance of enhanced education, providing a safety control instructions and installing a private rest rooms for patients who injected a low capacity radioiodine. Also, constructing institutional and legal management system is considered about the Emission management standard in drainage.

  • The n-type and p-type silicon samples were exposed by 40.0, 3.98 MeV proton beams ranging between 0 to $20.0{\times}10^{13}protons/cm^2$. Coincidence Doppler Broadening Positron Annihilation Spectroscopy (CDBPAS) were applied to study of defect characteristics of p type and n type silicon samples. In this investigation the numerical analysis of the spectra was employed to the determination of the shape parameter, S, defined as the ratio between the amount of counts in a central portion of the gamma spectrum and the total counts of whole gamma spectrum. The S-parameter values strongly depend on the irradiated proton beam that indicated the defects generate more, rather than the energy intensity. 40 MeV irradiated proton beam in the n-type silicon at $20.0{\times}10^{13}protons/cm^2$ was larger defects than 3.98 MeV irradiated proton beam. It was analysis between the proton irradiation beams and the proton intensities of the irradiation. Because of the Bragg peak, SRIM results shows mainly in a certain depth of the sample to form the defect by the proton irradiation, rather than the defects to appear for the entire sample.

  • In order to understand the present environmental condition and future impingement of Changjiang(Yangtze River) outflow upon the adjacent seas after the scheduled completion of the Sanxia (Three Gorges) Dam in 2009, we tried to estimate the mixing ratios among surface waters of three end-members: Changjiang Water (CW), Kuroshio Water (KW), and East China Sea Water (ECSW) using $^{228}Ra/^{226}Ra$ activity ratio and salinity as tracers. Water samples were collected from 32 stations in November 2005 (R/V Tamgu 3), from 20 stations in July 2006 (R/V Ocean 2000) and from 17 stations in August 2006 (R/V Ieodo) in the northern part of the East China Sea. Radium isotopes in ~300 liters of surface seawater were extracted onboard by filtering through manganese impregnated acrylic fibers and following coprecipitation as $Ba(Ra)SO_4$. Activities of radium isotopes were determined by a high purity germanium detector. Results show that the fraction of CW was in the range of 1-23% in the study area, while KW was in the range of 0-30 % and ECSW 58-100 %. The eastward plume of Changjiang outflow, commonly observed in satellite images during summer and also displayed by the eastward-decreasing CW fraction in this study, could be attributed to Ekman transport caused by the SE monsoon prevailing in this region during summer. Results of this study showed that in the drought season, there was a little or no fraction of CW in the study area. Concentration of dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) showed strong positive relationship with the fraction of CW, suggesting Changjiang as the major source of nitrogen. The mixing curve of DIN indicates the removal of nitrate by biological uptake during the mixing of CW with ambient seawater in the study area.

  • Radioactivity of naturally occurring radioactive nuclides (NORN) such as $^{226}Ra$, $^{228}Ac$ and $^{40}K$ were investigated for surface sediments collected from Ordos, Alashan, Taklimakan deserts and Loess plateau regions in China. By a Gamma-ray spectrometry, specific activity (SA) and SA ratio (SAR) of the NORN were determined for each source region of Asian dust. Characterization of the source regions of Asian dust was performed with the SA and SAR values. SA of $^{226}Ra$ in the three desert regions have almost same values in the range of mean value 17.9~21.9 Bq/kg, however, the SA in Loess Plateau has much higher values in the mean value of 35 Bq/Kg. SA of $^{228}Ac$ in the Ordos and Alashan desert regions have almost same values in the range of mean value 27.1~27.2 Bq/kg, and those in Taklimakan desert and Loess Plateau were 31.7 and 49.0 Bq/kg, respectively. In case of 40K, the SA in all regions have similar values in the range of 636~943 Bq/kg. The mean SAR value of $^{226}Ra/^{228}Ac$ in four source regions was almost same in the range of 0.708-0.721. It is shown that relationship between $^{226}Ra$ and $^{228}Ac$ is clearly presented in the source regions. The mean SAR values of $^{226}Ra/^{40}K$, $^{228}Ac/^{40}K$ are 0.0209-0.056, 0.0287-0.0773, respectively.
