  • The purpose of this study was to identify the latent classes in the changing patterns of marital conflict perceived by mothers to explore its relationship with the changing patterns of mothers' depression, school readiness, self-esteem, and happiness of their children five years after their birth. A total of 1,243 responses from the 1st (2008) to 5th (2012) and 7th (2014) to 10th (2017) Korean Child and Youth Panel Study(KCYPS) were analyzed by Latent Growth Modeling (LGM) and Growth Mixture Analysis (GMA). The results were as follows. First, three changing patterns in the mothers' perceived marital conflict groups were identified: low-low changing, average-uptrend, and high-unchanging group. Second, an increasing pattern of depression was found from mothers of high-unchanging group over five years. Third, school readiness for their children was differentiated according to the latent classes. In particular, children from the low-low changing group showed higher readiness as well as self-esteem and happiness. Fourth, children from mothers of the low-low changing group showed high self-esteem and happiness in lower grades in elementary school. The results of this study suggest that the mothers' perceived marital conflict had an influence on themselves as well as their children's school related behaviors. Suggestions for an intervention program to resolve marital conflict are also discussed.

  • The study had four purposes as follows; First, the researcher tried to find the characteristics of conflict. Second, the researcher attempted to find the factors influencing the conflict between mother and the eldest son, Third, the study attempted to find the therapist's intervention techniques, which were caused the change of the conflict between mother and the eldest son. Lastly, the study was to find the changed contents of family relationships. The total family counseling was 13 sessions, which included individual and family counseling. The study used constant comparative analysis by using open coding method to find the factors. Also, the researcher used Miles and Huberman's matrix and graphical network display to show the relationships among factors influencing the conflicts between mother and the eldest son. The study found the boundary problem of family, family's undifferentiated ego, dysfunctional communication patterns, and mother's experience from family of origin as factors influencing the conflict between mother and the eldest son. On the other hand, the study found that the therapist used the formation of therapeutic alliance relationship, guide of communication skills, the reflection of repeated pattern, reframing and a metaphor as intervention methods. The result of study revealed that changed level of family relationship, activating functional communication, changed boundary among family members, differentiated ego of family members, and changed cognition as the changed contents of family relationship.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the trajectory of early adolescent aggression and to assess the effects of perceived family factors on it. This study investigated the changes in aggression over time and the effects of three family factors, parental attachment, parental monitoring, and family conflict, on the changes using multilevel modeling. The data from Korea Youth Panel Survey(KYPS) of fourth graders who were followed over five years were analyzed. The results indicated that there was a significant average increase followed by a slight decrease in aggression over time; that is, the data followed a quadratic trend. Parental attachment, parental monitoring, and family conflict had significant time-independent effects on aggression, while only family conflict had a significant time-dependent effect on aggression. These results imply that family factors need to be emphasized in planning prevention and intervention programs to reduce aggression during adolescence.

  • The purposes of this study were firstly to investigate how the conflict-coping methods of husbands and wives relate to their cognition of their own conflict-coping methods and those of their spouse and secondly to investigate how the interaction patterns of the conflict-coping methods between husbands and wives affect their marital satisfaction in the early stage of marital life. The main findings of this study were as follows: Firstly, this study indicated that both husbands and wives recognized that they themselves use the more reasonable conflict-coping method than their spouse. Both thought that husbands use the more avoidant, conflict-coping method than wives. Secondly, the study showed that both husbands and wives are tend to use the same conflict-coping method as their spouse's conflict-coping method as perceived by them. All the conflict-coping methods of husbands were related to their perception of their wives' conflict-coping methods. In the can of wives, however, there was no significant correlation between their aggressive conflict-coping method and the husbands' avoidant conflict-coping method, or between their avoidant conflict-coping method and the husbands' reasonable conflict-coping method. These results indicated a gender-difference in the conflict-coping methods between husbands and wives. Thirdly, the study showed that when husbands and wives regarded the interaction pattern of the conflict-coping method between themselves and their spouse as the reasonable$\ast$reasonable pattern, both of them had the highest marital satisfaction. When husbands regarded the interaction pattern of the conflict-coping method as the aggressive$\ast$aggressive pattern, they had the lowest marital satisfaction. On the other hand, when wives regarded the interaction pattern of the conflict-coping method as the aggressive$\ast$avoidant pattern, they had the lowest marital satisfaction.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the factors associated with marital satisfaction and stability among married men and women. The major findings of this study are as follows: the factors associated with marital satisfaction and stability are different between gender. For married women the positive communication with spouse strongly had positive effect on women's marital satisfaction, while destructive conflict strongly had negative effect on women's marital stability. Otherwise, married men's positive communication with spouse was the most important factor in the marital satisfaction. The emotional support of family-of-origin strongly had effect on men's marital stability. This study reveals that the emotional support from families of origin have a direct effect on needs for affection and autonomy, positive communication, destructive conflict patterns, sexual satisfaction, marital satisfaction and stability. Therefore, the results could be useful resources for family counselors and researchers to develop educational program for married couples.

  • The aim of this study was to examine trajectories in and predictors of marital satisfaction among parents with one year old baby. Latent growth modeling was used with a sample of 984 households. Data from Panel Study on Korean Children conducted by Korea Institute of Child Care and Education were used. The study results revealed that for both fathers and mothers, marital satisfaction decreased over time after the birth of the first child. However, fathers' marital satisfaction decreased more steeply than mothers'. Furthermore, mothers' employment was associated with the changes of fathers' marital satisfaction. Father involvement and marital conflict predicted changes of mothers' marital satisfaction. These findings show that factors such as father involvement and marital conflict are more highly associated with changes in mothers' marital satisfaction than fathers'. Also, the study suggests that parent education should be systematically organized to promote father involvement and to resolve marital conflict.

  • Demand/withdraw communication is an important dysfunctional pattern of serial arguing. This study aims at addressing factors that affect the ways in which self-demand/partner-withdraw pattern increases the likelihood of persistence of serial arguing. We posit that sensitivity to rejection is positively related to the degree to which individuals perceive a partners' behavior as generally disconfirming, which is positively related to enactment of self-demand/partner-withdraw during an argumentative episode. This sequence is positively related to perception of arguments as unresolved. In addition, among those who reported their argument was resolved, this sequence is positively related to the likelihood that the argument is resolved without mutual agreement. Serial mediation analysis confirmed that the likelihood of resolution without mutual agreement were positively associated with rejection sensitivity partially because high RS individuals are likely to perceive their partner to be generally disconfirming and to enact self-demand/partner-withdraw communication during the episode. However, this pattern did not apply to perception of the argument as resolved.

  • This study examines adolescent delinquent behavior and the influence of friends, focusing specifically on friends' delinquent behavior and the influence of self-efficacy, parent-child conflict and parental control. A total of 1,399 adolescents attending five different high schools (male=642, female=756, consisting of 915 student attending high school and 484 students attending vocational high school) completed a questionnaire developed by Ahn, Hwang, Kim and Park (1997) and Bandura's (1995a) self-efficacy scale. Results indicate that those students who attend high school had parents with higher education, socio-economic status and better studying environment at home, while students attending vocational high school had higher parent-child conflict. Students attending high school had higher self-efficacy scores, while students attending vocational high school had higher scores on delinquent behavior. The results of LISREL analyses revealed a similar pattern for high school and vocational high school students. Combined analysis indicate that friends' delinquent behavior, parent-child conflict and parental control had direct and positive effect on students' delinquency behavior. Self-efficacy had a direct and negative influence of delinquency behavior. Similar pattern was obtained for friends' delinquency behavior, in which self-efficacy had a direct and negative influence of their delinquency behavior and their parent-child conflict and parental control had direct and positive effect on their delinquency behavior. In summary, those students who had lower self-efficacy, higher parent-child conflict and parental control, and with friends who are more likely to engage in delinquent behavior, had higher scores on delinquent behavior. Also, those students who had friends with lower self-efficacy scores and with higher parent-child conflict and parental control are more likely to engage in delinquent behavior, which in turn influenced their delinquent behavior. Friends' delinquent behavior had the greatest influence on students' delinquent behavior indicating the role of friends in influencing delinquency among adolescents.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop an effective intervention strategy for marriage migrant woman in family therapy. For this purpose, we collected counseling cases of professional counselors who successfully completed counseling and attempted the qualitative analysis of treatment intervention strategies and effects. The results of the study were obtained by dividing the meaning units in the immigrant woman's statements made during the counseling process composed of a total of 6 sessions. The counselors were analyzed to have tried the following intervention strategies. They attempted the following six strategies: Helping emotional differentiation by searching for unresolved emotional problems, dealing with undifferentiation due to family projection process and love triangle, dealing with multi-generational transfer process of the original family relationship patterns and coping mechanism, shedding lihgt on ineffectiveness of inconsistent communication due to emotional oppression applying a communication model of MRI, switching client's awareness through reorganization, suggesting a way of communication that leads to real self. Such counselors' attempts resulted in positive changes and treatment effects were found to include first, cognitive insights and motivation for change, second, improved communication skills and third, anxiety reduction and self-differentiation. Due to their husbands' refusal to participate in counseling, marriage migrant women often get involved in counseling alone, so they tend to worry that the effectiveness of family therapy may be low but it was found that the proper intervention of the counselor could improve the ability of the wife to resolve conflicts, which would be a great help in solving problems such as family violence and this study is meaningful in that it provided the appropriate therapeutic intervention strategies needed.
