  • Since boundary layer transition has a significant impact on the aero-thermodynamic performance of hypersonic flight vehicles, capability of accurate prediction of transition location is essential for design and performance analysis. In this study, γ-Reθt model is improved to predict transition of hypersonic boundary layers and validated. A coefficient in the production term of the intermittency transport equation that affects the transition onset location is constructed and applied as a function of Mach number, wall temperature, and freestream stagnation temperature based on the similarity numerical solution of compressible boundary layer. To take into account a Mach number dependency of transition onset momentum thickness Reynolds number and transition length, additional correlation equations are determined as function of Mach number and applied to Reθc and Flength correlations of the baseline model. The suggested model is implemented to a commercial CFD code in consideration of practical use. Analysis of hypersonic flat plate and circular cone boundary layers is carried out by using the model for validation purpose. An improvement of prediction capability with respect to variation of Mach number and unit Reynolds number is identified from the comparison with experimental data.

  • An occurrence of inclined heterolithic stratification (IHS) is described from a tidal point bar in a 40-m-deep distributary of the macrotidai, Han River delta, Korea. The channel bank demonstrates a convex-upward profile with intermittent presence or wave-formed scarps and terraces near the low-water level. The vertical succession of IHS is approximately 25 m thick and dips into the channel with angles reaching up to $14^{\circ}C$. The IHS overlies 15 m of trough cross-bedded sand deposited in the channel bottom. Even though the channel as a whole is ebb dominated, the preserved cross bedding is predominantly flood directed because the mutually evasive nature of the ebb and flood currents causes the point bar surface to be flood dominated. The IHS itself consists of inter-stratified fine sand, sandy silt, and silt with an fining-upward textural trend. Seasonal discharge variations of the Han River are not obvious in the deposits, because tile large size, distal location, and energetic tidal environment of the studied channel reduces the impart of river-stage fluctuations.

  • Conflicting data have been reported on the effect of nicotine on gastric mucosal damage. To elucidate the effect of chronic intermittent nicotine on gastric mucosal damage, intragastric nicotine (5 mg/kg, 10 mg/kg) was administered twice per day for 9 days. Gastric mucosal damage was created by s.c. injection of a large dose (1.2 mg/kg) of pentagastrin followed by pylorus ligation for 6 hours. Nicotine treated rats showed reduced gastric mucosal damage about 50% of the control. To examine the mechanism of the protective effect of nicotine, gastric perfusion experiments were done. Basal acid secretion was not affected by intragastric or intravenous nicotine. However, pentagastrin-stimulated acid secretion markedly inhibited by a bolus injection of nicotine, and this response was dose-related. These data indicates that chronic intermittent administration of nicotine protects gastric mucosa against gastrin-induced gastric mucosal damage, and nicotine-induced inhibition of gastrin-stimulated acid secretion has an important role for the protective effect of nicotine. Considering reports concerning nicotine's aggravating effect on the gastric mucosal damage, it is suggested that the methods of administration of nicotine may be an important decisive factor of the divergent action of nicotine on the gastric mucosa.

  • Stomach contents of 518 specimens of the yellow goosefish, Lophius litulon caught by the off-shore stownet in the southern waters of Korea were examined by means of the calculation of the frequency of occurrence number and weight percentages, and index of relative importance (IRI) in each prey organisms. Prey organisms of the yellow goosefish consist of fishes, crustaceans, cephalopods. Fishes were dominant prey group, and occupied $98.8\%$ in IRI of prey organisms. Four species of fish, Pseudosciaena manchurica Collichthys niveatus, Engraulis japonica, Trichiurus lepturus were dominant as to the IRI and occupied $87.2\%$ of the total IRI. P. manchurica was a dominant prey organism in predator's stomach through the year, and the other dominant prey organisms occurred intermittently with seasonal progress. P. manchurica was a dominant prey organism to all fish size, too. C. niveatus and E. japonica decreased in importance in the diet as the fish size increased concomitant with an increase in importance of T. lepturus. Mean species number and mean individual number of prey organisms increased with the fish size.

  • There is no willow riparian vegetation in Jeju Island, Korea. Instead, a genetically-isolated population of Adina rubella is found in some parts of the riparian system. We describe its syntaxonomy and synecology. A total of 27 phytosociological relev$\acute{e}$s were collected, 11 relev$\acute{e}$s from 91 sites and 16 relev$\acute{e}$s from the previously published relevant materials. Data were analyzed by traditional Braun-Blanquet method and multivariate PCoA (Principal coordinates analysis). New syntaxa are distinguished, Adinion rubellae all. nov. and its type association Tripogono-Adinetum rubellae ass. nov. with two subassociations, typicum and rhododendretosum poukhanensae. Adino-Rhododendretum poukhanensae Itow et al. 1993 was discarded owing to mismatch of syntaxonomy and syngeography of Adina and Rhododendron phytocoena. The alliance Adinion is Jeju's regional and partly ombrotrophic vegetation occurring in pothole and rock crevice where are independent on ground-water table. We also suggest a revised alliance, Rhododendrion poukhanensae Lee 2004 ex. hoc loco in Korean peninsula, as a corresponding syntaxon to Adinion, which completely differs from Phragmito-Salicion. Finally we pointed out that Adina phytocoena requiring an absolutely monitoring has been threatened by river maintenance project of local government.

  • The growth characteristics of Pinus thunbergii windbreak forest around Goosipo Beach, Sangha-Myon, Gochang-Gun, Jeollabuk-Do have been investigated, and the results are summarized as follows. The soil in the site was light acid sand with pH 5.7, and the mean sodium concentration of soils was 1.42dS/m. The tree diameter, height, crown width, and shape ratio(Height/DBH) were better with tree density was coming lower. Especially, the rate of shape ratio under 60 was more in sites with low tree density. This demonstrated that the trees have grown more soundly when the tree density was lower. The direction of main winds and distribution ratio of tree inclination had a correlation. The inclined trees are seemed to be influenced by main winds when they were younger and by Typhoon partly. Eighty one vascular plant species were found in the sites, and more number of herbaceous plants (57 taxa) lived there than woody plants (24 taxa). And more plant species of dune were found at the site where dune have developed well. Some thinning works need at high tree density areas in order to ensure effects of coastal windbreak.

  • High-resolution (Chirp, 3-11 kHz) echo facies and sedimentary facies of piston-core sediments were analyzed to reveal the late Quaternary depositional processes in the Korea Plateau and Ulleung Interplain Gap. The Korea Plateau is an Isolated topographic high with a very restricted input of terrigenous sediments, and its slope is characterized by a thin sediment cover and various-scale submarine canyons and valleys. Echo and sedimentary facies suggest that the plateau has been moulded mainly by persistent (hemi) pelagic sedimentation and intermittent settling of volcanic ashes. Sediments on the plateau slope and steep margins of ridges and seamounts were reworked by earthquake-induced, large-scale slope failures accompanied by slides, slumps and debris flows. As major fraction of the reworked sediments consists of (hemi) pelagic clay particles, large amounts of sediments released from mass flows were easily suspended to form turbid nepheloid layers rather than bottom-hugging turbidity currents, which flowed further downslope through the submarine canyons and spreaded over the Ulleung Basin plain. In the Ulleung Interplain Gap, sediments were introduced mainly by (hemi) pelagic settling and subordinate episodic mass flows (turbidity currents and debris flows) along the submarine channels from the slopes of the Oki Bank and Dok Island. The sediments in the Ulleung Interplain Channel and its margin were actively eroded and reworked by the deep water flow from the Japan Basin.

  • Seasonal changes in nutrients and suspended organic particulates were measured in the estuary of Nak-dong River in relation to the black laver bed. Monthly measurements of water temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, nutrients ( $NH_4$-N, $NO_2$-N, $NO_3$\-N, $PO_4$-P and $SiO_2$-Si) and organic suspended particulates (organic carbon and nitrogen) were determined at five stations from February through December, 1970. PH varied 7.6-8.4 with an average of 8.0, and percent saturation of dissolved oxygen were 71-147% with an average of 100.8%. Studies gave evidence that Nak-dong River estuary is strongly enriched with nutrients. Concentrations of nutrients were: 0.13-12.54 ${\mu}g$-atoms/${\iota}$ (averaging 1.63 ${\mu}g$-atoms/${\iota}$) for $NH_4-N$, 0.12-2.09 ${\mu}g$-atoms/${\iota}$ (averaging 0.71 ${\mu}g$-atoms/${\iota}$) for $NO_2-N$, 3.46-56.79 ${\mu}g$-atoms/${\iota}$ (averaging 21.54 ${\mu}g$-atoms/${\iota}$) for $NO_3$-N, 4.04-57.90 ${\mu}g$-atoms/${\iota}$ (averaging 23.79 ${\mu}g$-atoms/${\iota}$) for total soluble nitrogen, 0.18-5.05 ${\mu}g$-atoms/${\iota}$ (averaging 0.96 ${\mu}g$-atoms/${\iota}$) for $PO_4$-P, and 18.33-133.29 ${\mu}g$-atoms/${\iota}$ (averaging 71.57 ${\mu}g$-atoms/${\iota}$) for $SiO_2$-Si, respectively. These nutrient levels were considerably higher compare with other productive laver beds of Wan do and Pyung-il Do in Korea or Ise Bay in Japan. Concentrations of suspended organic particulates varied 55-648 ${\mu}g/{\iota}$ (averaging 392 ${\mu}g/{\iota}$) with organic carbon, 30-155 ${\mu}g/{\iota}$ (averaging 92 ${\mu}g/{\iota}$) with organic nitrogen, and its carbon-nitrogen ratios were varied within 1.5-8.4 with an average of 4.6.

  • Bird electrocution on contact with electricity lines is well reported and is quite common in Mongolian open areas. We visited 15-kV electricity distribution pole lines in a Southern Mongolian semi-desert region three times in 2017, in April, July, and September, to assess their risks to birds. The carcasses of 45 electrocuted birds representing 12 species were identified from 250 poles (overall mortality rate of 1.12% every 10 km). The majority of these electrocuted birds were endangered Saker Falcon (n=11) and common Black Kite (n=11). The lacks of roosting or perching sites in our study sites (indeed other open areas in Mongolia) may resulted for such high rate bird electrocution. A 751-base pair (bp) cytochrome c oxidase I (COI) gene was amplified for DNA sequence-based identification of carcasses that were difficult to identify directly. Our findings revealed the high electrocution risk for birds in Mongolian open areas, especially for the birds of prey, with relatively low-efficiency electrocution mitigation approaches. The findings also indicate that there is a need for better understanding of the risk of bird electrocution, particularly in the open areas. This will contribute to the conservation of endangered species.

  • Naeseong Stream is a sand-bed river that flows through the northern area of Gyeongbuk province. It is characterized by dynamic sandy bedforms developed in response to the seasonal hydrological fluctuation and by its unique riverine landscape called "white river." However, changes including construction of Yeongju Dam from 2010 and the extensive vegetation establishment around 2015 occurred along the Naeseong Stream. This paper aims to analyze climate, hydrology, and water quality as factors and to examine the possibility of channel changes accordingly. The second least precipitation during the last 60 years happened in 2015, which led to the lowest peak discharge in 50 years. The sediment characteristics of Naeseong Stream were not significantly different along the upstream and downstream reaches, but it was confirmed that annual minimum water level of the stream decreased continuously regardless of the dam construction. This suggests that intermittent drought and change in water quality are likely to provide favorable conditions for riparian vegetation establishment and the resulting physical changes have affected riverbed degradation. Therefore, it is necessary to conduct diversified monitoring in connection with river vegetation change in order to analyze the causes of river changes.
