In this study, modified triaxial compression tests were carried out to investigate the characteristics of shear strength of unsaturated dredged soils. The variation of shear strength generally depends on more matric suction than drained conditions, and then is gradually converged in matric suction 100kPa. It indicates that the effective angle of internal friction and effective cohesion in unsaturated conditions increase due to degree of saturation, namely, matric suction than those of saturated conditions. Therefore, it shows that apparent friction angle, ${\phi}^b$ due to the variation of matric suction to evaluate reasonable shear strength parameters in unsaturated soils should be considered.

As a turbulence-enhancing device, a mixing vane, which is installed at a spacer grid of the fuel assembly, plays an important role in improving convective heat transfer by generating either swirl flow in the subchannels or cross flow between the fuel rod gaps. Therefore, both the geometric configuration and the arrangement pattern of a mixing vane are important factors in determining the performance of a mixing vane. In this study, in order to examine the flow-distribution features inside a $5{\times}5$ fuel assembly with split-type mixing vanes, which was used in the benchmark calculation of the OECD/NEA, we conduct simulations using the commercial computational fluid dynamics software, ANSYS CFX R.14. We compare the predicted results with measured data obtained from the MATiS-H (Measurement and Analysis of Turbulent Mixing in Subchannels-Horizontal) test facility. In addition, we discuss the effect of the split-type mixing vanes on the flow pattern inside the fuel assembly.

Wide spread using of mobile and handy electronic apparatus is giving rise to a question on the harmfulness of health and causing troubles when electical and electronic equipments are in use. This paper reports on the experimental results obtained by using a pliable and structured specimen that has a long shape aperture, made of stainless steel fibers. Based on the TEM mode transfer structure that was designed and manufactured through HFSS, we measured electromagnetic shielding effectives, where the network analyzer was applied. We could draw a conclusion from this research that the metal fabric showed a good electromagnetic shielding effect, mainly by means of the good reflex loss at the fiber surface. Even though the material itself possesses a good absorption loss. the specimen revealed that structural factors. e.g.. the shape of the aperture. the size of the aperture, etc., can have a more influence on the shielding effect than the components of material have. A special notice is required for modeling and analyzing the electromagnetic characteristics of metal fabrics, because there exists a strong possibility that multiple reflection can happen on the surface of metal fibers. which can presume a model of fiber bundle and fabric structure.
This paper presents the results of a numerical investigation into the behavior of retaining wall subject to cycles of wetting and drying due to rainfall. The stress-pore pressure coupled finite element modeling strategy was first established for stimulating the wall behavior. A series of finite element analyses were then performed on a range of conditions including different rainfall and backfill conditions. The results indicated that the rainfall intensity was the primary influencing factor for the wall behavior. Also revealed was that the pre-rainfall condition determines the magnitudes and the distribution of matric suction which in fact has a significant impact on the behavior of wall during a major rainfall. This result demonstrates the importance of incorporating the pre-rainfall condition for numerical modeling of walls during heavy rainfall. Practical implications of the findings from this study are discussed in great detail.

Biodegradable polymeric stents have been issued to replace the existing non-degradable metal stents due to relatively improved biocompatibility and low side effects. Fundamentally, all the stents must possess the desired mechanism strength, especially, compression or radial force to maintain the diameters of expanded vessels. Therefore, this study suggests a helical structure and focused on the relation between the lateral compression and structural factors, Unlike a cylindrical model, the radial force of the helical model is proportional to the thickness and the length to the power of one, whereas the diameter to the power of 1.6. The function obtained from these results might provide the fundamental information to design and prepare the stem for clinical applications.

This study compares the revised method in loose saturated sandy ground where the LNG storage tank will be installed with an evaluation method by one-dimensional effective stress analysis using the UBC3D-PLM model. Various laboratory and field tests were conducted to establish the parameters necessary for evaluation. The revised liquefaction evaluation method using the seismic response analysis result and N value from standard penetration testing evaluated the possibility of liquefaction as high, but assessment using effective stress analysis, which can consider various liquefaction resistance factors, found the site to be somewhat stable against liquefaction. One-dimensional finite element analysis using UBC3D-PLM modeling facilitated easier assessment of stability against liquefaction than the other methods and minimized the area required for reinforcement against liquefaction. In addition, it is expected that two-and three-dimensional numerical analysis considering the foundation of the LNG storage tank can identify the seismic design and behavior when liquefaction occurs.
This paper presents the results of a numerical investigation on load carrying capacity of geogrid-encased stone columns to use as load carrying column(s) supporting a foundation load. A validated 3D stress-pore pressure coupled model that can effectively show rapid drainage capability of stone columns and encasement effect of geogrid was adopted and a parametric study was carried out on a number of influencing factors. It is shown that the geogrid encased stone columns can be effectively used as foundation load supporting columns in soft ground. The results of numerical investigation were presented so that the relationship between the load carrying capacity of geogrid-encased stone columns and the influencing factors can be identified. Practical implications of the findings are also discussed.
Horizontal drainage, which are representative dewatering method of domestic and foreign slope, are applied to reducing pore water pressure. Accordingly, several previous studies have been conducted, but horizontal drainage are standardized which is an unclean standard for a quantity calculation in filed. Therefore, this study presents field soil and laboratory model box to identify a drainage performance and influencing factors of various horizontal drainage. Furthermore, this study verifies the performance comparison of drainage shape or size according to different particle size distributions. In the outflow results for steady state, the study found that all samples are drained at a constant rate after a minimum of 3 minutes to maximum of 15 minutes. In the case of comparing the outflow per hour (Unit flux) in coarse grained soils, it found that drainage shape and size affect drainage performance. In the result, the future expected to be used basic data that experiment of drainage performance on fine grained soils and determine the quantity.
