Anatophysiological Changes Related to Myopization Induced by Alcohol Ingestion on Eyes (알코올 섭취 후 발생한 근시화와 관련된 눈의 해부생리학적 변화)

  • 알코올 섭취 후 발생하는 해부생리학적 변화가 눈의 일시적인 근시화에 미치는 영향을 알아보고자 하였다. 평균 24.5${\pm}$1.5세의 남자 8명(16 안)을 대상으로 0.42 g/kg의 알코올을 30분 간에 걸쳐 섭취토록 한 다음, 알코올 섭취 1시간, 4시간, 24시간 후의 교정굴절력, 각막곡률반경과 두께, 동공직경, 안압, 그리고 안구축의 길이변화를 측정하여 알코올 섭취 전과 비교하였다. 알코올 섭취 1시간 후에 알코올 섭취 전과 비교하여 호흡 중 알코올 농도가 가장 높았고(p<0.001), 교정굴절력의 구면 (-)굴절력 증가(p<0.05), 동공 크기의 감소(p<0.05), 안압의 하강(p<0.001), 그리고 안구축의 길이 증가가 나타났다. 알코올 섭취 4시간 후에도 모든 측정값들이 섭취 1시간 후와 동일한 경향이었다. 그러나 알코올 섭취 24시간 후에는 알코올 섭취 전과 비교하여 의의있는 변화를 보이지 않았다. 알코올 섭취로 인한 일시적인 근시화는 안압하강과 안구축의 길이변화와 관련성이 있을 것으로 판단된다.

Analysis of cornea thickness and intra ocular pressure of 20 to 24 years old population in Korea (한국인 20세부터 24세까지 각막 두께와 안압의 분석)

  • Purpose: The aim of this study was to determine the distribution of the cornea thickness and intra ocular pressure Korean adult of 20 to 24 year old using the Pentacam and tonometer. Methods: The subjects of this study were 43 Korean adults with healthy eyes. Corneal thickness was measured with Pentacam device. The intra ocular pressure was measured with tonometer. Data was analyzed by means of the Pearson's correlation cofficient. P-values<0.001 were considered statistically significant. Results: Mean age of subjects was 20.41±0.86 years. The mean +/- intra ocular pressure of the right eye and left eye were 16.236±2.523mmHg and 16.971±1.992mmHg, respectively. The mean central corneal thickness of the right eye and left eye was 545.324±38.682㎛ and 547.442±33.778㎛, respectively. No significant difference in central corneal thickness was found between the right and left eyes. But, there was a statistically significant difference between central cornea thickness and peripheral cornea thickness around 4 mm of central cornea(p<0.001, Pearson's correlation). However there was no statistically significant difference between central cornea thickness and intra ocular pressure. Conclusion: The results of this study could be used as a clinical reference data for diagnosis and treatment of cornea in Korean adult.

The momentary movement of soft contact lens by blinking : The change of movement depending on wearing time (손목에 의한 소프트콘택트렌즈의 순간적인 움직임 : 착용시간의 증가에 따른 움직임의 변화)

  • To investigate the momentary movement pattern of soft contact lens(SCL) depending on wearing time, eight types of soft contact lenses were worn by 10 normal subjects and the momentary movements of SCLs were estimated using by high speed camera(FASTCAM ultima 1024). When the momentary movements of SCLs in the cornea between blinkings were compared after 15 min wearing, the vertical movements of all eight SCLs were about 2 times larger than the horizontal movement but the extent of these movement difference was a function of kinds of SCLs. The momentary moving distance of SCL varied from the kinds of SCLs, which A and B lens, daily wear lens, moved significantly larger distance compared with other SCLs. The momentary movements between blinkings decreased significantly after 8hr wear of SCLs. The extents were different when SCLs were compared with each other, which the reduction range of horizontal and vertical movement was 24.6~60.0% and 20.4~94.3%, respectively. The A, B and C lenses which had relatively higher water content showed the larger movement reduction after SCL wear. This results suggest that wearing SCL for some hours decreases the movement of SCl, which can induce the change of tear flow.

  • 본 연구에서는 압전체의 횡 진동모드를 이용한 압전 초음파 진동자를 설계 분석하였다. 이전의 란쥬반 진동자는 진동을 얻기 위하여, 복수의 원판 또는 사각판 형태의 압전 세라믹을 서로 반대 방향으로 분극하여 마주 보도록 설치한 후 전기적으로 병렬로 연결하고 상단 및 하단에 금속부을 부착하여 전체를 볼트로 조인 복잡한 구조와 큰 출력 파워를 갚는 반면, 본 연구에서는 판상형의 압전소자와 일체형 금속진동체를 이용하여 기계적 출력 파워 조절이 용이한 구조의 압전 진동자를 고안하여, 압전진동자의 횡 진동 모드를 이용함으로써 신뢰성과 정확도가 높고 진동효율이 최대가 되도록 설계하였다. 설계 개발된 압전 진동자는 진동의 크기 조절이 용이하여 일반 진동자 뿐 만 아니라, 외과 및 안과 수술에 있어서 인체조직이나 각막상피의 활성화를 유지한 상태에서 안전하게 절개 및 분리 시술용 진동자로 사용 할 수 있는 이점이있다. 압전 진동자는 유한요소법 시뮬레이션 프로그램 (ATILA 5.2.4)을 이용하여 설계를 하였으며 압전소자의 두께는 각각 0.2 mm, 0.5 mm로 제작하여 시뮬레이션 결과와 제작된 샘플의 특성을 비교하였고, 변위측정은 칼날을 결합 한 상태에서 공진 주파수대역 부근 주파수별로 측정 비교하였다.

Analysis of the Central Corneal Thickness and Anterior Chamber Depth of Eyes in Korean Young Population using the Pentacam (Pentacam을 이용한 한국 청소년 집단에서 각막의 중심두께와 전방깊이 분석)

  • Purpose. This study was to investigate the analysis of the central corneal thickness and anterior chamber depth of eyes in Korean Young Population using the Pentacam topography. Methods. The subjects consisted of 126 eyes from normal cornea of Korean aged 7-12($8.857{\pm}1.501$) years during 2009. The thinnest location, pachy apex, and pupil central region of the cornea thickness was measured using the Pentacam pachymetry. The anterior chamber depth of normal corneas was measured with Pentacam. Results. The thinnest location of corneal thickness was $547.413{\pm}37.893$um. The pachy apex of cornea thickness was $552.103{\pm}36.016$um. Also, the pupil center of corneal thickness was measured $552.143{\pm}36.418$um. On the other hand, the mean thickness in the central cornea was a statically significant relationship(t-test, p=0.0002) between pachy apex and thinnest zone. Also the mean thickness of the central cornea was a statically significant correlation(pearson p=0.0001) among the pupil center, pachy apex and thinnest zone. The anterior chamber depth was $3.137{\pm}0.308$mm. The mean depth in the anterior chamber of cornea was a statically relationship(t-test, p>0.05) between OD and OS. Conclusions. The results of this clinical study suggested that the analysis of the central corneal thickness and anterior chamber depth using Pentacam in Korean young population can provide the useful morphological information in diagnosis of cornea for the contact lens fitting and corneal refraction surgery.

Survey of Corneal Thickness, Endothelial Cell and Intraocular Pressure in New Zealand White Rabbits (뉴질랜드 흰 토끼의 각막 두께, 내피세포 및 안압에 관한 조사)

  • Rabbit's cornea is the most common thing that used for researches in ophthalmology, so many experimentations have done. The purpose of this study was to survey the corneal pachymetry, tonometry and specular microscopy in New Zealand white rabbits. Three months old male rabbits ($2.9{\pm}0.2\;kg$) were examined with contact the specular microscope to evaluate the endothelial cell density, coefficiency of variation and the percentage of hexagonal cells in the central cornea. For the pachymetry, ultrasonic pachymeter was used for central cornea in each twenty rabbits, and tonometry was performed forty rabbit's eyes to evaluate the intraocular pressure. Corneal endothelial cell density in New Zealand white rabbit was $3304{\pm}354\;cell/mm^2$. Coefficiency of variation was $45.8{\pm}2$ and the percentage of hexagonal cells in the central cornea was $44.4{\pm}11%$. The pachymetry of cornea was $346.1{\pm}21\;{\mu}m$ and tonometry of eye was $14.3{\pm}2\;mmHg$. It is considered that normal New Zealand white rabbit's pachymetry, specular microscopy and tonometry were useful basic data of rabbit's cornea for research and clinic in veterinary ophthalmology.

Electrical and Optical Properties of Vacuum-Evaporated CdS Films for the Window Layer of $CdS/CuInSe_2$ Solar Cells. ($CdS/CuInSe_2$태양전지의 Window Layer로 쓰이는 CdS박막의 진공증착법에 따른 전기적.광학적 성질)

  • 1μm-CdS films for a window layer of CdS/CuInSe2 solar cell have been prepared by vacuum of 1x10-3 mTorr. Source and substrate temperature ranges were used 800-1100'C and 50-200℃ respectively. Structural, electircal and optical properties of CdS films have been investigated by X-ray diffractometer (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SSEM), electrical resistivity, the Hall measurement and optical transmission spectra. Electrical resistivity and optical transmission of the CdS films decreased with the increase in CdS source temperature without substrate heating. All the films had hexagonal structure and strong texture with (002) orientation of grain normal to the substrate glass. CdS films evaporated at 1000℃ were the highest electrical conductivity of 0.9(S/cm). Electrical resistivity and optical transmission at the substrate temperature of 100℃ were 40(Ω,cm) and 80% respectively.

  • The dynamic properties of the 3rd-order neuron of the retina was investigated by using conventional intracellular recording techniques. Experiments were performed in the superfused retina-eyecup preparation of the channel catfish, Ictalurus punctatus. The cornea, iris, lens, and vitreous were removed by absorption with Kimwipe tissue under the dissection microscope thereby exposing the retina in a hemi -eyecup. The electrical signal was amplified by electrometer, viewed on oscilloscope. Regular signals from the cells were recorded on a penwriter and stored by data recorder and computer. Full-field, spot or annular light stimuli were generated on a computer monitor and focused onto the retina. Baclofen hyperpolarized the dark membrane potential, suppressed sustained component and enhanced transient component of the ON-sustained cell with a large transient component, but did not affect the surround antagonism of the cell. Baclofen selectively suppressed responses evoked by moving bar light stimuli on the ON-OFF transient cell. The results suggest that transient cells have directional selectivity in the inner retina. These dynamic properties of amacrine and ganglion cells were modulated by baclofen. Therefore, it is presumed that there is baclofen-induced directional selectivity in ON-OFF transient cells in the catfish retina.

Clinical Effects of an Improved Pump Reaction Rate and Automatic Occlusion Sensing System in Phacoemulsification (수정체유화장치의 초음파 출력속도 및 자동막힘감지 기능 향상의 술 후 임상결과 비교)

  • Purpose: A recently introduced phacoemulsification system, the WhiteStar $Signature^{(R)}$ PRO, has demonstrated improved nucleus followability and cutting efficiency via an improved pump regulator with a higher reaction response and an automatic occlusion sensing system. In this study, we compared various phacoemulsification parameters between the new system and an older version of the device. Methods: A total of 80 eyes of 68 patients with cataracts who had undergone phacoemulsification by a single surgeon were included in this study. Forty eyes of patients underwent phacoemulsification using the older $Signature^{(R)}$ system (WhiteStar); these patients were classified as the control group. Another 40 eyes of patients underwent phacoemulsification with the newer enhanced system, the WhiteStar $Signature^{(R)}$ PRO; these patients were assigned to the experimental group. During the operation, operative parameters, including the effective phaco time (parameter of effective phaco time with a specific coefficient for the transversal movement expressed in seconds, EFX), ultrasound time (seconds [s]), effective phacoemulsification time (EPT, s), average phacoemulsification power (AVG, %), and balanced salt solution usage, were measured to determine the performance enhancement offered by the updated system. Central corneal thickness was measured before and after surgery to compare corneal edema. The relationships between the two groups were analyzed using an independent t-test. Results: The Signature $PRO^{(R)}$ system showed a lower EFX (p < 0.001), a shorter EPT (p < 0.001), and a smaller AVG (p < 0.001). Postoperative corneal thickness did not differ significantly between the two groups. Conclusions: Comparing the efficacy of the improved reaction speed of the device and automatic occlusion sensing system in performing phacoemulsification, the updated Signature $PRO^{(R)}$ system demonstrated superior followability and cutting efficiency regardless of nuclear cataract hardness.

Study on the Visual Cells in the Retina of Macropodus ocellatus (Pisces, Osphronemidae) Freshwater Fish from Korea (한국산 담수어류 버들붕어, Macropodus ocellatus (Pisces, Osphronemidae) 망막의 시각세포에 관한 연구)

  • Using both light and scanning electron microscopies, it was investigated on the visual cells as well as the eyes of Macropodus ocellatus (Pisces, Osphronemidae). This species had a circular lens and yellowish cornea. The eyes had $3.5{\pm}0.2mm$ which is $31.1{\pm}3.0%$ in a percentage of eye diameter relative to head length. The retina ($158.2{\pm}10.6{\mu}m$) was built of several layers, including the visual cell layer which consists of three types of cells: single cons ($27.8{\pm}1.6{\mu}m$) and equal double cone ($33.9{\pm}3.7{\mu}m$), and large rods ($57.3{\pm}1.3{\mu}m$). The visual cell layer then was classified into the correct pattern. All visual cells were clearly distinguished from two parts (inner and outer segments). The elongated rod cells were extend to the bottom of the retinal pigment epithelium. In scanning electron microscopy, the outer segment links to inner segment by so-called calyceal piles. The M. ocellatus single and double cones appearance form a flower-petal arrangement, which is a regular mosaic pattern that contains quadrilateral units by four double cones surrounding a single cone.
