  • The purpose of this study is to examine the mediating effect of self-esteem on the effect of family relationship satisfaction on depression among the elderly and to draw implications for the social welfare field. For this study, raw data from the 16th Korean Welfare Panel Survey were used for analysis, and a sample of 4,310 elderly people aged 65 years or older was selected as respondents. The collected data were subjected to frequency analysis and correlation analysis using IBM SPSS 24.0, and the Process Macro of SPSS proposed by Hayes (2018) was used to examine the mediating effect. The results of the significance test of family relationship satisfaction on depression showed that family relationship satisfaction was significant, i.e., the higher the level of family relationship satisfaction, the lower the depression. In addition, the results of the significance test of the effects of family relationship satisfaction and self-esteem on depression showed that family relationship satisfaction had a significant effect, and the mediating variable, self-esteem, had a significant effect on depression. Therefore, this study aims to identify the characteristics of family relationship satisfaction among the elderly and provide policy suggestions and social work practice directions to reduce the level of depression among the elderly.

The situation of 'the weaken state and strengthened market' in the age of Kim Jong Il have still continued in the age of Kim Jong Un. The formal income security for the elderly need to return to the former condition.

  • The purpose of this study is to empirically test some hypotheses derived from the alliance model of the family, which focuses on theorizing situations in which family members simultaneously compete with other members within a family and rivals in society to maximize their statuses in the family and in society. Specifically, associations between wives' level of income relative to that of their husbands and each spouse's satisfaction with family relationships were examined, using the first wave of Korea Welfare Panel Study having been conducted in 2006 by the Korea Institute for Health and Social Affairs. The results of the analyses showed that three ones among four research hypotheses were supported. Wives' satisfaction with family relationships was negatively associated with their relative level of income. This pattern strongly appeared among wives from lower class families rather than among wives from middle/upper class families. Relationship between wives' relative level of income and husbands' satisfaction with family relationships was likely to be bi-directional among husbands from middle/upper class families. Unlike the author's expectation, however, this bi-directional relationship was not observed among husbands from lower class families.

  • This study aims to analyze the differences in the strength of single-parent families based on family characteristics. Using a sample of 267 female single parents, we explore the factors that impact family strength. We found that several variables impact the strength of families headed by a female single parent: the length of time members had lived together as a single-parent family, co-residents, interactions with ex-spouses, full-time work, and household income. Based on these findings, we suggest that the length of time that single-parent families have lived together is an important criterion for planning and evaluating the family policies and services offered by healthy family support centers. Furthermore, in the context of family resource management, family policies and programs that address time management and family life planning for full-time single parents should be developed and implemented.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine whether family relationships of elderly single-person households affect community participation and whether these relationships differ by gender. Based on Baltes and Baltes (1990) 's selection, optimization, and compensation theory (SOC) and the argument that family members are a social capital by Prandini (2014), we test whether family relationships can affect community participation in old age. In order to verify this, single-person households were extracted from the 2017 National Survey of Living Conditions and Welfare Needs conducted by the Korea Institute for Health and Social Affairs (Male sample=370, Female sample=1770), multiple regression analysis were conducted with the dependent variables of friends·neighbors and the participation at Kyungrodang·welfare centers for the elderly. The results are as follows. In the case of men, family relations showed no significant effect on their participation in friends·neighbors, or Kyungrodang·welfare centers. However, in the case of women, the frequency of contact with family had a positive effect on the frequency of meeting friends·neighbors. Family contact frequency and child relationship satisfaction had a positive (+) effect on Kyungrodang·welfare center participation, while family meeting frequency had a negative effect on participation in Kyungrodang·welfare centers. For women, although Prandini's (2014) claim that family members are a social capital seems to be supported, it was found that the impact could vary depending on the type of community participation. In addition, practical discussions and suggestions were presented.

  • The study is to analyze support-related issues, particularly associated with elderly and children care, which have been a fundamental agenda of family welfare policy. We are expected for societal-level controversy on the relationship of family support and social security in the near future because of rapid increase in ageing and divorce rate. Accordingly, we need to establish social consensus on the extent to which both family support system and social support system are responsible for the life maintenance of the elderly and the children from divorced family. We also clarify the various characteristics(including scope, degree, period of time, and need/manageability) of support provided by family members. Considering the changes of family structure and population composition, the policy of supporting the old and children should go for social responsibility. Findings show that civil law and social welfare law have unclear application on the relationship between family support and social security, and contents in family support. In particular, public assistance law strongly emphasizes the principle of family support while social insurance laws provide only limited and insufficient family maintenance. The suggestions of further study on support-related issues are given in the rapidly changing society and the increasing economic instability.
