Second, there are gaps between consciousness and practice of division of gender role in family. But social workers generally are inclined toward receiving division of gender role in family and applied to their family practice. Third, monolithic family image have a tendency of versatility in family structure, is inclined toward the division of gender role and myth of motherhood. The purpose of this study is to identify the aspect of the single-parent family discourse in the TV documentary. Considering the fact that the normal family myth shows limitations in reality, it is necessary to expand the single-parent family research based on various analysis subjects. For this purpose, the study conducted a narrative analysis of KBS1's documentary 'Gong-gam' (2015), which deals with single daddy and single mom's stories at the same time. Single daddy and single mom are commonly described as overcoming the 'deprived situation'. However, asymmetric description was outstanding in that single daddy is depicted as performing the role of mother as well whereas the single mom appears to be unable to perform even the mother's role. Also, the narrative in the documentary compares broken family with normal family and reproduces the fixed sex role, which considers the problem an individual area. Such description can be seen as a process of persuading them into a "modified normal family myth". However, as the fundamental problem is the absence of new discourse, the role of the media to reproduce and expand the conflicting family discourses will be important.
The purpose of this study is to identify and illustrate academic trends that can be gleaned from family studies on multicultural families in Korea, and to gain a suggestion of the relatedness between discourse and practice by reviewing research in that field. The results of discourse analysis are as follows: First, research on multicultural families in family studies set limited focal subjects. Second, the research accepts assimilationism as a primary multicultural policy set forward by the Korean Government. Third, the research reflects a more or less conservative consciousness of family maintenance. Fourth, there have been some changes in perspectives from the perception of immigrant women in multicultural families as passive minorities to more active agents. Lastly, the research perceives family life in multicultural families as a project for practice.
The purpose of this study is to critically review recent discourse on aging appeared in Korean newspapers. For this purpose, 1,725 articles on 'aging' or 'elderly' appeared on three major Korean newspapers during 1997- 2006 are analyzed. It is shown that there is a recent surge of articles portraying the positive images of aging in Korean newspapers emphasizing the importance of productive, successful aging and active life style of the elderly. This trend is a welcomed change from the negative images of elderly as dependent burden of society. However, it seems that over emphasis on positive aging and 'New Elderly' might have created another stereotype about the elderly and unintentionally marginalize the certain group of the elderly. By focusing on individual responsibility, it also overlooked the constraints imposed by social structure on disadvantaged elderly group, such as women, elderly in low socio-economic strata. Theoretical and policy implications of this trends are discussed.
This is a study of discourses on the family used during the Enlightenment period in Korea. To this end, 1 have conducted a qualitative analysis of the editorials taken from the Taehan Maeil Sinbo of that period. The major findings are as follows: First, these Enlightenment period discourses claimed that civilized nations evolved from a family in primitive society. This concept of family is different from the concept of family in a Confucian society. Civilized societies believed the family is less important than the nation. At that time, Korean Press used the term bumoguk (Parental nation) to refer to the nation in an attempt to equate national loyalty to filial piety. Second, the Enlightenment period claimed that the nation belonged in the Public sphere while the family belonged in the private sphere. However, it was stated that it was the duty of the family to discipline the members and make them into good citizens. Finally, Enlightenment discourses used familyism as the basis of their arguments.
The purpose of this study is to analyse the discourses about modem motherhood in Western und Korean society in order to find a new basis for the family policy. The general view that motherhood is merely natural ceased to be valid since the early 1980ties. Nowadays one is rather inclined to define motherhood as a social, cultural and historical fact which goes far beyond the biological dimensions. The concept of motherhood which has been useful to fulfil the industralisation in the modem times cannot be applied to the changed world of our times. The family policy which is closely connected with women must not start from the modem motherhood ideology but from the context of the changed life of woman in our times. I hope that this study could contribute to stimulating the discourse about the family policy which takes into consideration the changed living conditions.
In this paper I will try to analyze some studies about the ‘Postmodern Family’in Western countries. I will try to find out, above all in Western countries, how much the concepts “Plurality”, “Individuality”, “Deinstitutionalisation”, “Relation”and “Postmodernism” are linked to each other. Also the ‘Postmodern Ftmily’concept is an interesting topic for the understanding of the recent changes and in future in the Korean family. In this paper I will try to explain the Korean family change with the concept and phenomenon ‘Postmodern Family’. The discussion about the ‘Postmodern Family’will provide much stimulus for the Korean family research area. Also this discussion about ‘Postmodern Family’for the recent Korean family research will be an important attempt to give a new light in studying the Korean modem family.
